See, I've been really wary about seeing The Artist. It seems like one of those movies where regardless of the actual quality of the film, people will feel obligated to rave about it or risk losing their cred. Not that it actually is a bad film or even a not-brilliant one, I haven't seen it and can't make that call, but I don't think that what other people tell you about a film like that can ever really be trust-able.

Nah, I don't buy into that. There's plenty of movies that the critics have raved about that the general public isn't afraid to say, "it's shit!". I genuinely enjoyed it. It is, as Rodi said, charming and lovely.

I think Ben might need to see it again, as I'm wondering if his expectations were too high.

As I said, still haven't seen it, so I have no basis for saying whether it is a good OR a bad OR a middling film. I just think that, due largely to the aesthetic, this isn't one you can really trust other people's judgement on and should take everything you hear about it with a grain of salt. Not that the people who say they enjoyed it didn't genuinely do so, and more power to them for it.

Ben definitely does not need to see it again.

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo was long and winding, but also interesting. I'm not sure how I feel about the story, even though I was interested all the time. David Fincher sure knows how to paint a picture though.

The only thing that bugs the hell out of me is that it's set in Sweden, yet there are all these strange artifacts from the US scattered around. Salander has a few 7-Eleven bags in her house. A thermometer showed it was '2 degrees' outside while it was snowing, so it couldn't have been Celsius. Fahrenheit? Weird. The actors all speaking English is no problem, I can buy into that easily. But these seem like oversights in the mise-en-scène. But then again it's David Fincher and he doesn't that.

[ADDED] I checked it out and apparently 7-Eleven is a worldwide brand, not just American. For some reason that freaks me out way more than MacDonaldses everywhere.

Well all I can tell you is that it entertained a packed cinema in Liverpool, filled with people of all ages. One of the teens behind me, just before the film started, said, "I bet this is shit". And yet it enraptured the entire audience. Nobody was talking or using their phone, and the everything I overheard was positive (including from the teens behind me).

Is it a flawless film? No. Is it the best film of the year? I don't know. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Is it a charming and lovely movie? Yes, it is. Did it manage to hold the attention of a modern audience with only music and black and white visuals? Somehow it did.

If anything it shows the power of good story, and how Michael Bay visuals are not necessary, even in this day and age.

Just go and see it, and don't expect the greatest film ever made. Just see if it can hold your attention with no spoken dialogue and black and white visuals.

Well let's see what Ben thinks.

My nemesis!

There are many films doing this already. I didn't enjoy the story at all, the film's style rendered it cliched and predictable.

But, like I say, it seems I'm in the extreme minority.

That's no problem unless the ground was covered in thick layers of it, though. It's not like snow instantly turns into rain (or the other way around) as the temperature outside ones house crosses 0 degrees.

I am not Rodi.

Yeah, I used to pass a 7-Eleven all the time when visiting my grandmother in Stockholm.

I live practically surrounded by 7-Elevens. None of them are actually open from 7 to 23 (or to 11), which is FUCKING HILARIOUS.

While we're all deciding who Rodi is, I was just surprised to learn that LucasFilm's first non-franchise movie since the last time they tried (and failed) to make box office success, is finally here! (Well, in the US/Canada.)

But boy, what a terrible poster...

My rep is going down the drain here fast. I feel like... someone's trying to steal my identity.

Red Tails is George Lucas' final 'movie before I retire', but that might not mean a whole lot. It's a movie I will probably see, because why not. Spielberg and Lucas are definitely stealing ideas from each other on the same wavelength. Warhorse: it's war through the eyes of a horse! Red Tails: it's war through the eyes of Cuba Gooding Jr a fighter plane!

I wish George would just retire. I wish he'd done that about twenty years ago.

Hey guys, remember The Net?

Floppy discs. Porn Seinfeld soundtrack. Mozart Ghost. Hilarious beeping noises when people write code. 'I am Angela Bennett!'

George Lucas has no more bang in him. He's been doing nothing but deflating slowly since 1983.

I got through a minute twenty of that The Net trailer and howled in terror and shut it away. Good lords.

E: I don't know how people around these parts feel about Ryan Reynolds, but damn Buried is good.

That's weird. Ignoring all of the exploding stuff and smoke, for some reason I can't pin down the composition looks like something I'd expect for a comedy film. The plane looks like it needs John Candy or Jim Carey leaning out the window and pulling a goofy expression.

I was going to say that Sweden is bloody full of them, but then I realized that the place I was actually thinking of was ICA. There are still definitely 7-Elevens in Sweden, however.

Are you sure?

Sixty percent sure, yes.

Has anyone seen Anonymous and, if you have, what did you think of it?

I keep expecting to see a dog leaning out of the plane, its tongue stuck out and whipping behind it like a kite.
