Twig Posted February 19, 2014 Porn, huh? I can definitely see where they would've taken it in that direction. I'm glad they didn't in the anime. It works pretty well as it is.
coaxmetal Posted February 19, 2014 I'm not gonna say that's the wrong choice. From the New World is great though! Just don't read the manga - it's porn! Good to know, I will avoid it. I was planning to, since I am enjoying the show. I'm a bit over halfway through now. Is sword art online one of those that takes place in an MMO? I've never really liked those. Too many steps removed I guess. There seem to be quite a few of them though. Anyone here read any of Tsutomu Nihei's work? He did Blame! and a few other things, I'm reading the official (I read the fan translation previouslyt) translation of Knights of Sidonia, and I really enjoy it. It's a lot easier to follow this his other work, but still has his signature style. Good scifi space manga. I wish more volumes were out in English though. N1njaSquirrel Posted February 19, 2014 yeah, SAO is set in an MMO universe where they are trapped by the creator of the game. They put on a crash-helmet esq thing that can also administer a deadly poison so that when they die in the game they die in real life. It's not as bad as Ixion Saga, but it's not great either. I didn't mind it until about episode 8, where the plot line resolved around a mass murder case, which turned out to be the husband of one of the victims. Instead of going to jail, his team mates just laughed it off and said 'oh well he's learnt his lesson' and stroll off into the sunset. So. Fucking. Retarded. Twig Posted February 19, 2014 Well I just marathoned the last nine episodes of From the New World. It sort of veered off into typical "we've got a mission, LET'S FINISH IT" territory for a decent chunk of the episodes there, but I'm fine with that because goddamn it's a heavy series, and I needed a break. It was nicely capped off. GOOD SERIES. EDIT: I've also decided to drop http://www.crunchyroll.com/nagi-no-asukara-nagi-asu-a-lull-in-the-sea after only one episode. It just wasn't very compelling. And, to be honest, I never would've even watched it without a recommendation if not for the promo image to the right there. I like that underwater city quite a bit. But it just kind of seems like it's going to be a sort of typical anime young kids love triangle yawnfest sorta series instead of something interesting about people who live underwater interacting with people who live above water. Tanukitsune Posted February 19, 2014 I've watched one episode of Ouran High School Host Club and I think I'm hooked... I couldn't help to notice that the protagonist had a female voice actress, so it didn't really surprise in the end when you find out she was a girl. And the part where they had a giant arrow pointing at the vase yelling at you that it would break? I don't know why, but I found it hilarious. I'm finding the characters both amusing and compelling, I'm surprised how much I love them all after only one episode.

All in all Ouran's one of the most genuinely funny series i've ever watched, it has a great sense of comic timing which is missing in a lot of shows that try to satirise anime tropes. Speaking of which watched episode 7 of Space Dandy and laughed for the first time!
N1njaSquirrel Posted February 19, 2014 I couldn't help to notice that the protagonist had a female voice actress, so it didn't really surprise in the end when you find out she was a girl. You'd be surprised how many male roles are voiced by women in anime, especially shonen stuff. Luffy in One Piece is voiced by a lass. Junko Takeuchi voices both Gon Freecs in the original Hunter x Hunter as well as Naruto in uh Naruto. That's a shame. There is a clear potential love triangle, and the main guy is a massive hormonal ass, but there is plot points which do not revolve around the main love triangle thing. I'd say give it another episode or two before dismissing it out of hand. My missus really likes it, and I'm only on like episode 5, so I can't really comment on it as a whole, but it's good. Currently there is definitely a feeling of there being something more than just an underwater love triangle. Just watched the latest episode of Hunter x Hunter (116). Fucking hell. That was worth the build-up. also why does Gon still think Kite is alive? Is he? I thought he was dead. Is this Gon's nievitey?

There seem to be quite a few of them though. Yeah, if you're not into that kind of thing SAO probably wouldn't do anything for you, but I like I said, I do quite like the first half. It actually sells the horror of being trapped in a virtual world pretty well, and has an almost Groundhog Day-like arc, where at first the characters are freaked out, then they settle into a routine for a while, then they overcome their problems. I've watched one episode of Ouran High School Host Club and I think I'm hooked... I'm finding the characters both amusing and compelling, I'm surprised how much I love them all after only one episode. Ouran is great. It's probably the anime with the third biggest gap between how good it is and how good it seems like it would be (first and second are Madoka and Princess Tutu). He was in Shoot's floating bird cage thing, and was basically all psycho and attacked anyone who tried to touch him? Gon wants Pitou to fix Kite.

I'm not a big fan of Madoka (finding it a bit empty once you get passed the admittedly flash visuals), but Princess Tutu is pretty damn great, managing to pack in good characters, nice comic moments, and interesting meta commentry without getting overly pretentious. N1njaSquirrel Posted February 25, 2014 Kite is totally alive! Did you skip an episode? He was in Shoot's floating bird cage thing, and was basically all psycho and attacked anyone who tried to touch him? Gon wants Pitou to fix Kite. I totally remember that, but as his head was firmly separated from his body, I assumed that he was dead, and Pitou didn't 'revive' Kite, just animated him using the puppet thing that was above him to train her soldiers. That he's alive is just Gon's wishful thinking and naivety
Tanukitsune Posted February 25, 2014 Damn, I've finished Ouran and I have no idea of what to watch next that will come close to this show in tone and humor... Maybe Fruits Basket? I have no idea...
Codicier Posted February 25, 2014 Damn, I've finished Ouran and I have no idea of what to watch next that will come close to this show in tone and humor... Maybe Fruits Basket? I have no idea... Guess it depends what you got out of the show, for me what I liked about Ouran was its high energy, optimistic, and fundamentally very generous sense of humour. What was it exactly about Ouran's tone/humour that you specifically fell for?
Tanukitsune Posted February 25, 2014 Hmm, it might be I enjoy Shoujo over Shonen for starters, less fighting, more character development... As for this show in particular, I just loved the characters, like you said the show is pretty optimistic and has a high energy. I'm frankly surprised on how much I love the characters and how much I laugh WITH and not AT them, I'd usually hate characters like Tamaki or Kyoya, but here I just got to know them better and found them amazing! tegan Posted February 25, 2014 Ouran stands out because it's a show about the popular boys trying to get the unpopular girl to notice them and not the other way around. Also because Haruhi befriends them by not being a doormat willing to put up with their bullshit.
Tanukitsune Posted February 25, 2014 Yeah, they do have a very special relationship, Haruhi seems to bring the best of out all of them. Tamaki might have brought them together as friends, but Haruhi made them a "family"?
N1njaSquirrel Posted February 25, 2014 Tanukistune, I've suggested it before, but I'd advise you watch Princess Jellyfish. It feels close to Ouran, in a way.

That he's alive is just Gon's wishful thinking and naivety I was definitely under the impression that Kite is absolutely alive, but when Pitou put him back together she fucked Kite right up and made him a mindless drone, working on pure instinct - "attack anything that touches him", basically. If Gon's naive, then so is everyone else who decided to, for some reason, keep Kite in captivity instead of just killing him off once and for all.

I find the energy of Ouran High School Host Club to be a lot like Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge, which was released in the US as The Wallflower. It's got a lot more bishounen-based gags, but the frenetic pacing and a strong lead female performance make them more synonymous than they probably should be in my head. Tanukitsune Posted February 25, 2014 Damn, they only have two Episodes of Princess Jellyfish on Hulu... do you need to pay anything to watch shows on Funimation? At least The Wallflower is on Hulu, I'll watch that in the mean time, thanks for the suggestions! :
N1njaSquirrel Posted February 25, 2014 As you are from spain, I'm guessing you are the same as us brits and Funimation have a lovely non-american ban on vids on their site. I'd Torrent it if i were you.
Tanukitsune Posted February 25, 2014 With Proxymate I can watch Crunchyroll, Daisuki and Hulu... But yeah, I can't only see the episodes they have on Hulu so far. :|

One thing about Princess Jellyfish and The Wallflower (and to a lot lesser extent Ouran) that occasionally bothers me is they seem to add a "but when she dresses/cleans up, she is conventionally beautiful" disclaimer to the situation they present. Is it really necessary to show that as a dramatic element so the (mostly male) supporting cast can make fools of themselves and then repent/realise the errors of their ways. I mean obviously they are comedies and so need to be absurd, but do we really ever need to know how someone "could look" as long as we know how they want to look? I mean obviously they are comedies and so need to be absurd, but do we really ever need to know how someone "could look" as long as we know how they want to look? To be completely fair, there's supposed to be some narrative trickery going on with The Wallflower. It's very clearly stated in the first episode that Sunako has a unibrow and acne, although it's played as a throwaway joke and of course they never draw it. She only "cleans up" when she feels beautiful on the inside (or that's how it's supposed to be, but the array of She's All That tropes are so ingrained that the writers can't help but forget). If I could have a magical anime wish, I'd wish for The Wallflower to be less uneven in general, but apparently a lot of that comes from the mangaka, who gradually lost herself to ugly-girl-wish-fulfillment rather than the original self-acceptance message. Twig Posted February 26, 2014 Crunchyroll is ruining my life. I ain't got time for all this shit! (Well okay I do but shut up.) I watched the first episode of this: http://www.crunchyroll.com/hozuki-no-reitetsu It was a delightfully fun-loving and silly depiction of hell. I will continue watching. Also I love the opening song and video. It is the best!
