Cowboy Bebop (the movie) barely had a plot. It's stylish and has a nice soundtrack, but... nothing memorable.

Fhe f#@k do you mean it has no plot??? They're basically trying to stop a terrorist. All the stuff inbetween is them investigating sources and his whereabouts and some minor backstory. For lack of a better term, it's a stand alone 'episode' and you really don't need to know anything about the series to actually enjoy the movie. As for some of you folks who seem to think that the series took itself seriously, that couldn't be further from the truth.

That's the impression I got when I watched it. It's too long ago to get into now, especially since the movie was so forgettable.

Has anyone here watched Monster? I hear that it's supposed to be quite good, but I'm having a bit of trouble getting through it. I think I'm around episode 20 currently. It's interesting and all, but why does it have to be dragged out for 74 episodes. I hear that a couple of movies based on it are in the works and they're being written by the guy who wrote the script for A History of Violence. That sounds quite promising. I think a distilled version of the story would be quite nice.

No Moos, but I've also heard that the manga is particularly excellent.

Thread Revive!:jesus::greatscott:

I haven't watched any new anime series since Dennô Coil in 2007... and I'm trying to catch up; without having to go through most of the titty bouncing/shonen crap. Any suggestions ?

I recently went "Oh, I wonder what's new" but the sad, sad thing is that there hasn't been ANYTHING in that period of time. All anime is bouncy titty shounen crap now. Oh grown up shows, where have you gone? :(

Much like the original post in this thread, I always discounted Anime, but after diving head first into it, I love it.

What i've watched in Chronological order:

FLCL

My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute (I'm fully aware that this title sounds like porn)

I tried to watch Serial Experiments Lain, but I couldn't keep going around episode 6.

RIN ~Daughters of Mnemosyne~

Currently i'm watching The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya.

All of the above anime are excellent. Despite giving up on Lain, I was impressed by what I saw, it was simply too indecipherable for me.

I watched Mnemosyne and was both disgusted and massively impressed by it, I would recommend it, however it pushes the boundaries of anime vs hentai so, so, so hard and has the most intense violence. It isn't for the faint of heart.

Here's some titles I watched recently, that weren't bad:

- Haibane Renmei, a quaint, quiet anime about angels in a rustic city by the studio that did the excellent, aforementioned Serial Experiments Lain.

- The new Evangelion films. I didn't know that was even necessary to begin with, but now that the second one is out, I must say I really like them. They put Evangelion's madness through a prism, focusing what is cool about them (wildly animated battles, crazy NERV machinations) and cutting away a lot of the painful fat where Shinji is just being a teenage whiner. Good good!

- Toward the Terra, the modern anime adaptation of a sci-fi classic. It's old-school in terms of storytelling, but it's charming.

Of course it seems like anime is only about bouncing fan service nowadays, but that's a skewed perception. Anime has always been like this, but there's usually been good stuff in there too. It's hard to look past the squiggly awfulness of series like Highschool of the Dead, but we've also had Deathnote, for instance. It's just a matter of where you look. Anime is a broad industry. There's something for everyone.

You're going to laugh at one of the last anime I watched...

I saw a clip of Eiken and thought that it was so ludicrous it just HAD to be mocking all these fanservicey animes out there... I mean, it has a 10 year girl with breasts the size of Godzilla... How could it be for real, right?.... RIGHT?

I watched the whole show with the delusion that it was mocking fanservice and for that reason I found it kinda awesome, but then I found out it was for REAL...

I know feel like I was a B series movies and laughed at the bad gore effects.... only to find out it was a snuff film... ;(

And you want to know what show I saw after that? IKKI TOUSEN! :fart:

I was hankering for a new brawler and the Ikki Tousen one for PSP was the only one I hadn't played yet (that I know of), so I watched the show to know who the people were in it while I wait for the game to arrive from Japan...

OH GOD JAPAN! This time I wasn't under any delusions, I knew it was going to be fanservicey, but WOW! THE SHOW HAD A GODDAMN RAPE SCENE! :frusty:

The rest of the show is "DERP DERP PANTY SHOT DERP DERP BOOBS!" it's stupid in a amusing way....

Fortunately I've started to watch Galaxy Fraulein Yuna, which is actually good and fun! And since it's pretty old, even if does have fanservice, it won't be shoving panties down my throat...

Do they make modern anime WITHOUT fanservice, right? No maids, no girls with eye patches, no maids with eye patches?;(

PS: What do you guys think of Panty & Stocking? I love how it has the best visual pun ever that translates to ALL languages... Panty turns her panties into a gun.... LITERAL PANTY SHOTS! XD

It's odd how it doesn't feel as dirty and wrong as other anime even though Panty is having sex every five seconds...

Interesting, I haven't really dived into pre-90's TV series, so I'll check this out. Also, if you're into low key anime, I suggest Kino's Journey.

Six episodes ? I'll take it!

I'll be also watching The Wings of Honnêamise and East of Eden by the director of the GitS:SaC series.

You misunderstand: though there IS an older Toward the Terra anime, the one I'm referencing is only a few years old. It's based on a 70s sci-fi manga though, at the time quite revolutionary written and drawn by a female mangaka. Up until then they would never do sci-fi or anything other than cutesy manga. (Fun fact: still before that time, it were MALE mangaka who did everything in the industry, including the cutesy shojo. Yeah.)

It's not for everyone, but I'd recommended it anyway, just because there really isn't anything else like it. If you like slow-moving stuff, I'd say: watch it. Now. Gush gush gush favorite anime tv show thing.

Huh. what do you know, there's an anime thread.

If it hasn't been mentioned yet:

Paranoia Agent is the best anime thing of all time. Of all time.

I want to check it, because Satoshi Kon makes pretty awesome things. If I'm not mistaken, Paranoia Agent was sort of a (visual/auditory/narrative) precursor to Paprika.

I'm still in process of watching everything master Satoshi Kon made in his short life. It's so damn wrong that he passed away.

I remember watching Haibane Renmei back maybe 5-6 years ago. I don't think I watched the whole series, but I can't be sure at this point.

Big fan of Kon's work, Perfect Blue in particular. Still need to see Paranoia Agent, though.

I'm sending in my Masters' thesis proposal today, and I'm writing about fansubbing, so I guess I need to watch a lot more anime, and call it research.

 Totally agree. Anything he directed is pretty much gold. It still bums me out that he passed away. The soundtracks that Susumu Hirasawa made for his stuff are pretty awesome as well. :D

So, on thumbeteer's advice, I've watched The Wings of Honneamise and Daughters of Mnemosyne. I'm a bit conflicted about both, but for very different reasons. Actually, I'm still articulating in my head what I thought about Honneamise, so I'll post my opinion later.

As for Daughters of Mnemosyne ... despite a distinct amount of unnecessary gore/sex/fan service scenes - think Elfen Lied in quantity, intensity and pointlessness- I liked a lot its first episode because it acted very casually toward its background and characters. They put in a lots of graphic anecdote about the world and character; but these are mostly fragmented and never backed up by straightforward exposition. I liked that a lot and it made me hope for a low key anime.

This changes gradually through the second and third episode - which are still OK - culminating in the introduction of an overarching plot and mythology, both of which turned out the be very generic and downplaying all that was interesting in the first place.

There are a few interesting things here and there in the second half (

most notably, jumping of several decades between some episode

) , but it's very marginal among the boob/rape/dismemberment scenes that take most of the screen time.

If you decide to watch this, though, do skip the horrendous opening credits.

I like it. I'm actually in the process of sorting out my final dissertation on "Posthumanity and Cyborgs in Sci-Fi Anime".

Nice to know I'm not the only one thinking critically about it

I'm shallow because I really want to like Satoshi Kon's works but I can't seem to get past the character design (except Tokyo Godfathers) and the way the animation in his movies tends to be budgeted. Maybe I'll try to rewatch most things he's directed someday when I have more time, because I still find a lot there to like.
