Brilliant live Super Mario World cover, and other game remix/performance discussion!

Recommended Posts

Oh man. Spotted this here. Brain exploding.

The complete soundtrack to Super Mario World, covered by one man using dozens of instruments. Roughly in game order, faithful to the originals, with some bizarre artistic license thrown around. A private hobby made public.

Completely insane.

Samples: Main titles ... Donut Plains ... Castle medley ... Captain Lou Albano

Download the whole thing in a zip here, or from one of the links here if you're for some reason averse to VBR MP3s.

I downloaded it yesterday and listened to it today. It's very impressive that he did it by himself, and some of them were good, but some of them were a little... let's say eccentric.

Thanks for the link, Jake.

Ever heard of OneUp Studios? Their Mario remixes are some of my favorites, especially Booster Tower, and Donut Lifts.

Ace stuff, Jake. As for OneUp, I've heard their Sleigh remix before, and just like then I am incredibly impressed. The sheer remixing, rearranging and performing is just really admirable, with the merged in tunes sounding like they never weren't part of the original.

Wow, this soundtrack makes me extremely happy! Thanks Jake :)

The songs that strike a chord with me: Titlescreen, Vanilla Dome, p-block special do thema.

That last one actually has remixed lyrics of the old Super Mario Brothers show. Highly disturbing!

All these video games homages remind me of a local band in my area called the

minibosses

Basically they're a live band that plays old video game themes.I tried getting them to play to a Scifi/Fantasy/Gaming convention in which I was organizing, but alas, they could not come.

And not to mention that the stadium in my area is going to have the LA Philharmonic play video game themes. Woot.

Jake once sent me this mp3 of the Minibosses doing a bossa nova version of the Zelda theme. Even though it was a 30 sec random tryout thing it was totally awesome. Then I saw them perform at the GANG awards last year and wasn't too impressed. :shroom:

That wasn't the Minibosses it was the OneUps/OneUp Mushrooms! The Minibosses are these guys, while the OneUps are these guys.

The OneUps have taken that Zelda recording off their site, which is too bad. That band is like a revolving door though. It seems like sometimes they have a really competent group (like when they recorded their cover of the Donut Lifts song from Yoshi's Island) and other times it sounds entirely slapped together (like at the GANG awards).

... also they apparently have an album coming out? Oh man, hilariously it includes not only that loungey Zelda cover, but a similarly inspired cover of the Koopa Beach track from SNES Mario Kart. If you played Mario Sunshine, their Isle Delfino cover sounds pretty spot on too.

No. Yeah. The Minibosses are great.
