What's the best movie soundtrack ever?

Recommended Posts

I vote for Donnie Darko. (by soundtrack I probably mean songs you can hear in the movie, not songs that are simply on a soundtrack CD)

Echo & the Bunnyman's "The Killing Moon" haunted me for a year or so, and now Joy Division's "Love Will Tear Us Apart" has almost haunted me for a year as well. I sometimes listen to just that song for hours.

SO you mean actual songs, not the usual ambient soundtrack fare? If so, I'd go with the Batman soundtrack. It's on the overall very wellconstructed, both in the songs themselves as in the build-up and consistency.

The Third Man

Vertigo

Ding!

Right on.

Other good ones:

- 2001

- Manhattan

(Although most of what's in 2001 isn't original, and none of Manhattan's is)

Also good:

- The Shawshank Redemption

- Superman

- Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

- Lawrence of Arabia

- The Godfather

And of course...

- Indiana Jones *.*

- Star Wars *.*

Bladerunner

Buckaroo Banzai I guess, I mean the scene where his band plays the song is one of the most amazing scenes in a movie ever and I guess it's because of the song (a guitar solo followed by a trumpet solo?)

All the sergio leone movies (especially The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly)

Quentin Tarantino movies (Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs)

Blues Brothers

A bunch of other movies I was going to name have already been listed.

Whatever

The best movie soundtrack comes from Hackers.

I'll stand by that until I can think of anything better.

other great soundtracks for me:

requiem for a dream

amelie

leon the professional

the crow (both soundtrack and score)

ghost dog, way of the samourai

ghost in the shell and innocence

not so sure about collateral but there was some nice use of contemporary music

EDIT: Oh god! I forgot!

Seven

Fight Club (not as much as Seven though)

I still don't know what to make of the soundtrack to The Third Man, whether I think it's awesome or just weird.

I was under the impression that it was all just the same polka song looping endlessly, and loudly. I showed it to my mom and she really liked it (soundtrack and otherwise).

2001 Space Oddysey has good use of silence and music, heavy on public domain classics though.

I liked like the 'Snatch' soundtrack alot too, I thought it was used deftly in the movie and especially in the boxing, fat-guy-chase, and burning trailer parts. If nothing else the movie was well edited with music in mind.

I pretty much worship John Barry. The Living Daylights and View To A Kill were both awesome soundtracks.

I also loved Moulin Rouge.

Yeah, but what a song! Plus Herb Alpert's version is a total classic.

The Motorcycle Diaries

Man, I'm really disappointed I didn't see this in theatres. I'll have to make sure to rent it.

The Royal Tenenbaums - by far the greatest soundtrack of all time.

-Fly by Nick Drake

-Stephanie Says by The Velvet Underground

-Look At Me by John Lennon

-Wigwam by Bob Dylan

-Me And Julio Down By The Schoolyard by Paul Simon

-Niddle In The Hay by Elliot Smith

-Police And Thieves by The Clash

-Outstanding original compositions by Mark Mothersbaugh.

-An orchestrated version of Hey Jude that would've made The Beatles proud.

Runner up: Rushmore - John Lennon, Cat Stevens, The Kinks, The Creation, The Who, Mark Mothersbaugh, etc.
