WTF?! Prey back from the dead?

Recommended Posts

The CNN Money games columnist Chris Morris reports on his newest article that the game everyone thought to be dead years ago is making a comeback.

http://money.cnn.com/2005/04/05/commentary/game_over/column_gaming/index.htm

The show's biggest surprise, though, will likely be the revelation of "Prey". Gamers first heard of "Prey" in 1997. The game, originally about a Native American who fights several nefarious alien races, was thought to be cancelled, but quietly restarted a few years ago. The new version will use the "Doom 3" graphics engine and is said to be a visually striking title. There's no word on whether the story has changed.

3D Realms, makers of the popular "Duke Nukem" series, originally worked on "Prey," but word is they have handed development to a third party and are overseeing work on the game. Take Two Interactive Software (Research) is the likely publisher for the game, given its relationship with 3D Realms, but has not made any announcements.

There was a rumor about two years ago that Human Head Studios were making the game, it seems that those rumors were true.

People are waiting for what George Broussard has to say about this.

Oh, I always figured Fable (Project Ego) was Dmitri. Has there been any info on Dmitri at all?

Also, I'm hoping to see Duke Nukem Forever in action. They got to have something up their sleeves, right?

Yeah, they'll probably announce that they're starting again using the UT 2005 engine.

err, kinda. heres what is known. first off, its not fable. second, its been in development since black&white was released ... so its been a good 4 or so years already. the technology it uses is what drives lionhead : everything you see in lionheads other games use dmitri's base code, so the facial expression technology, face morphing, good & evil aspect, etc. was all designed for dmitri.

most interestingly though, when molyneux was asked "what is dmitri about?" in an interview, he said, "I cant tell you. It's such a simple concept that if I told you, you'd be asking a hundred other questions." (or something very close to that anyway). He also did quite a bit of talking about the beauty of sandbox games in that same interview.

so as you can see, alot is known about the game, but it really amounts to nothing.

Hey, oddly enough, there's some more info on Dmitri.

http://www.computerandvideo games.com/r/?http://www.computerandvideo games.com/news/news_story.php(que)id=117011

here's the interesting bit ...

"It's a game about [pause for dramatic drum roll] ...you. It allows anyone who plays the game to relive their life, their entire individual life. That's a pretty ambitious concept."

sounds pretty damn cool, and sounds VERY pc game. i have no idea how its gonna work, but im kinda excited. i say "kinda" because i was hoping it'd be a mad out-there concept (kinda like dungeon keeper was) but im still pretty cool with this concept. I'm hoping E3 will give us some more info ...

Sounds like total BS to me, actually. He hasn't said anything about any actual gameplay whatsoever.

After the disaster that was Fable, I'm never taking anything Molyneux says as being even remotely related to reality. I still think he's brilliant, but he should keep quiet and let the games speak for themselves (or show themselves as being cardboard cutouts pretending to be more complex than they really are as Fable did).

yeah I feel the same way, Molyneux has developed into this rolling ball of hyperbole (which should indicate he belongs in southern california?!) I guess this is a remnant from what shall henceforth be known as "Pete's Years of Pure Hyperbole" (or PYPHy in short) since he has taken a vow of "shut the fuck up already" since someone seems to have explained to him that he is a discredit onto his own public persona... whatever...argh

i don't think its BS, simply because, believe it or not, he has been shutting up ...

... people seem to forget that dmitri isn't a brand new project. dmitri has been in development since black&white was complete. that is 4 years now. he was concepting the game when black&white neared the end of its development, and was ready to go when b&w was done. so thats 4 SOLID years of development. and even then he hasn't said much ... that one line i just posted is just about all he's said about dmitri. one line in four years ... thats amazing for molyneux! :)

the problem with fable was that molyneux was talking about it before things were in place. he was talking about the gameplay before the gameplay was set in stone, talking about the technology before it was proven. that won't be the case anymore. with dmitri in development for 4 years, all the limitations have been understood, the scope has been set, the gameplay has been finalized. when he talks about dmitri now, he'll be talking about things that already work, not things that MAY work in the future.

i think he's learned his lesson with fable, i doubt he'll let it happen again.

[edit] as for the gameplay, i'm guessing it'll be an rpg. molyneux has always had an interest in them (even back when b&w was in development) so it seems to make sense ... [/edit]

Well no, the problem with Fable is that it wasn't very good at all. I approached that game completely forgetting (as much as possible) about the hype and what it was supposed to be.

Unfortunately what it was, wasn't very good at all.

The story was weak, the morality system completely pointless, and it was the easiest game I've played in at least five, possibly ten years (I never died! Not once! I never even needed the ressurection phials!).

Yeah the game looked good, and the voice acting was fun, but who cares when every other aspect of the game was so bad?

Black & White was okay, although I might be more forgiving of that because I have such fond memories of populous.

Dmitri may be the greatest game ever made. I doubt it. I have more confidence in Spore from Will Wright than I do from this game we know essentially nothing about whatsoever.

exactly!

all the stuff we are talking about here is essentially pointless, since we don't no shit about the game to begin with!

and again I might point out that fable is not a molyneux game but merely something lionhead took under its wing during their whole "satelite thing". the scope for fable was huge and that's essentially why it ended up being such a big disappointment. that's what you get when you start out with slightly naive ideas about the possibilities of games. in the end, they (little blue box, or whatever the name of the development team is) had to face the problem that producing the game they had set out to make would have taken way too much work and money! so molyneux stepped in and made sure that there actually would be a game at all. so in the end fable is one BIG compromise.

as far as dmitri is concerned, I am merely sceptical about the scope of the game, as it appears to be too vague a concept to realize. but they will probably find a focus, if it really is going to be done.

3D Realms have opened a Prey forum

http://forums.3drealms.com/ubbthreads/postlist.php?Cat=0&Board=prey

There G. Broussard has revealed that Human Head Studios are indeed the ones developing Prey now.

Also now there's http://www.prey.com/

In it's source code there's a binary:

01001000011010010110010001101001011011100110011100100000011101000110100001101001011011100110011101110011001000000110100101101110001000000111010001101000011001010010000001110011011011110111010101110010011000110110010100100000011000110110111101100100011001010010000001101001011100110010000001110011011011110010000000110010001100000111010001101000001000000110001101100101011011100111010001110101011100100111100100101110001000000100100101100110001000000111100101101111011101010010011101110010011001010010000001101100011011110110111101101011011010010110111001100111001000000110011001101111011100100010000001101101011011110111001001100101001000000110100101101110011001100110111100111010001000000101000001000011001000000100011101100001011011010110010101110010001011100010000001001010011101010110111001100101001000000110100101110011011100110111010101100101001011100010000001010111011011110111001001101100011001000111011101101001011001000110010100100000011001000110010101100010011101010111010000101110
