Best unit design feature in any strategy game

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone!

First post here :). I'd love to know your thoughts on games that have customizable units. Preferably games that did unit customization incredibly well.

I played pretty much anything to do with Battletech and fondly remember Starfleet Command 2 and 3. I've dabble with HoI4 and Stellaris, but they only touch on unit designing.

Have I missed any great indie games that feature unit customization?

Am I the only one obsessed with this?

Thanks for your replies!

Have you tried any of the Fifa games xD. Customization levels on custom players are quite the thing...
There are some online games that work as well... this one for example.

The games that spring to mind are Supreme Commander where your command mech could be customized, also Dawn of War/Company of Heroes had customization of what weapons your squads were carrying. Not sure if they did them particularly well, just the only games I can think of right now. Dawn of War also let you do custom paint jobs for your units which was super cool and something I wish more Warhammer games would let you do as its a big part of the Miniatures game.

Hey, I kind of like how Hegemony III does it: you can level your unit up when they have gained enough experience, but the customizations aren't just for better combat, but also for economics. E.g. a unit can become a hunter, which will lessen it's ressource consumption. The main feature is this: if youget to the 5th upgrade, then you can create a general and detach him from your unit. So you have just created a new general unit out of your unit upgrades. You can then freely move the general across the map, attach him to another unit (or make him a governor in one of your cites).
