Twin Peaks Rewatch 45

The Return, Part 10
Twin Peaks dives deep into the uncomfortable and painful, at a very human level this week, and we do our best to talk through it all. Fortunately, in addition to a cavalcade of very dangerous, very bad people doing unconscionable things, Albert goes on a date and seems to have a great time. Join us in discussing Twin Peaks The Return, Part 10.

Looking for a place to discuss the season with fellow viewers? We recommend the Twin Peaks Rewatch forum.

So Cooper comes back this week, right?

Where's Audrey?

Is Leo okay?

Lets talk about Part 10!

Surprised one of your questions wasn't "How's Annie?", Jake

I'm surprised I never made the visual connection between Nadine's drape runner obsession and the Red Room curtain-walls.

That was kind of the first episode I've been disappointed in so far. It was pretty short and not a lot seemed to happen? Or maybe a lot did and I just need to think about the episode some more.

EDIT: The more I think about it I think I like it now. I think some things were just a little off putting to me like Richard Horne and the Vegas girls being dumb gag.

Anyone else kinda nervous whenever someone opens up their hotel room door?

I kinda love the Silver Mustang gang. Also, I totally thought Audrey was gonna stroll up to the Horne residence/Ben was gonna call her.

For me last episode was kinda ho-hum, but I really enjoyed this one. I noticed that Lynch and John Neff had writing credits on 'No Stars' which Rebekah Del Rio sang at the end. John Neff produced some of David Lynch's albums, and was involved with the music in some of his previous films.

Laura is the one. And a video effect at Gordon's door.

Holy shit. Richard Horne is truly a monster, and Chad is his fucking lackey. FUCK CHAD. Meth mustache guy is also human garbage. Bad Coop is behind the glass box after all? Was not expecting Janey to admire Coopers bangin' bod and then sex him up at all. That was ridiculous! Diane's heavily encrypted text reply answered my big question from last week, somewhat. Cole and then Tammy getting a huge kick out of Albert's date with Constance was superb.

Liked the episode but man some of it was brutal. Hello Johnny, how are you today?

So ... What do we make of Gordon's The Buck Stops Here doodle). Is his subconscious driving him  toward Truman?

Kept hoping that she would crawl over and untie Johnny so he's give Richard a well deserved smackdown.

Working in a psych hospital I've been attacked by the mittens and helmet folks. They don't stop until they're on the bottom of about ten staff.

This entire episode was about things I didn't expect to come back coming back.  Jim Belushi!  Patrick Fischler!  Johnny Horne!  Harry Dean Stanton!  The Brother From Get Out!  Nadine!  Silent drape runners!  The sex teens that were murdered by a video effect! Dr. Alex Jones-coby!  I think Jake is totally on the mark that by the end of this season we'll realize that there was actually no time wasted in this season. all the pieces mattered.

Except maybe this episode. It seems to me that it exists solely to convince us that other stuff in the show matters. Everything totally connects, man!

I felt disappointed by this episode. It's not bad; but it seems non-essential compared with everything else that's come before it. In a second viewing, where there's no mandatory wait between episodes, I expect this one will be waited through more than looked forward to.

The drape runners sign was good. Most everything else felt redundant: doubling-down on something we've already seen. Bad people keep being bad, or we have new reasons to keep thinking they're bad. That's about it.

The one exception might be Dougie and Janey-E, but we'll have to see where that goes (as in all things). From Cooper's perspective, I already got this kind of familial emotionality when he cried while watching Sonny Jim. There's value in seeing Janey-E start to see Dougie differently; but while he's still in his fugue state, it could just as easily be a gag, and at her expense. It really all depends on who Cooper is if and when he comes out, and what their relationship is at that point.

The Johnny talking bear has got to be the podcast opening for this episode. They recast Johnny's actor? I wonder what was the reason for that? Maybe Robert Bauer quit acting? Well, actually it seems this new guy is the third actor to play Johnny. In the pilot there was another actor who played Johnny, different than other episodes in S1&S2.

Frost and Lynch have really scripted Richard Horne to be an absolute bastard. A small fish who is just a worthless piece of shit wrecking stuff around. Chad is even lower scum.

I so loved the Albert scene, feels so good to see him finally enjoy something. Also of course Nadine has to have a silent drape runner store. That's her life goal. :D

Jayne-E having sex with Dougie/Coop was funny, the kids face when he wakes up and realizes what is happening in his parents bedroom.

I remember back when they were filming in late 2015 to early 2016 there was a report of someone seeing the drape runners store sign in town (in North Bend or wherever they filmed the on-location stuff) so I figured it was going to show up at some point. Cool that they've made Nadine a success apparently. Still surprised we haven't seen Big Ed yet.

I was disappointed in this episode. It felt like it was just dragging it's feet. I'm okay with the show being slowly paced, and I like weird drawn-out scenes basically as a rule, but not much of what happened in this episode hit with me at all. The opening one-two punch of murder and domestic abuse put me off, and the Janey-E and Dougie stuff was amusing in the first scene but went on way too long. The final scene with Cole just standing still and being delivered two slight pieces of exposition was just so empty.

As for stuff I liked, I thought Jacoby's rant was hilarious, and Jim Belushi was absolutely brilliant in his scenes. I actually liked the casino scenes on their own; much like the weird cops from last episode, I appreciate them as amusing scenes but don't enjoy their place in the show. That is, it feels more and more like these characters are just going to get their one important episode, and then be brought back in tiny, underwhelming clips for the rest of the season.

I guess my frustration is less with the actual content, but the way it's presented. I like the characters in this show, and I want to see more of most of them, but when they're fed to you in tiny chunks every other week, it's hard to feel involved in their stories. There's just so much going on that a lot of it gets lost and muddled in my head, and I never feel like any progress is actually being made. Maybe that's the grandest trick of this season: it feels like nothing is happening, and yet you're constantly being provided with new information and connections.

I agree with what @anderbubble said, when we don't have to wait another week for new things to happen, this episode won't feel so bad. But as it is, my major highlight is Laura's weird ghost appearing to Gordon Cole. To me, that felt like this episode's True Twin Peaks Moment™.

I loved this episode. Kyle Maclachlan has a rockin' bod. My only issue is the Tom Sizemore plotline (Anthony, the bad insurance agent) getting incorporated in with the Casino Brothers plotline. It feels like the world is contracting so Frost and Lynch can kill two birds with one stone. It's like the show is saying, keep track of these ten things, and then a big scooper comes and clumps a few of them together.

When Lynch is emotional Cole or spiritual Cole he's excellent, but when he's exposition Cole he's really flat.

I think going into all the details of Richard Horne is good for the show. He's a young man who has quickly gone from petty drug dealer to having an all-out crime spree. As a total Audrey devotee it creates a conflict with how I view her as well. I just hope the "explanation" isn't that Richard is literally the offspring of an evil spirit/doppelganger.

I feel like Johnny's going to come back in a big way near the end and completely brutalize someone in a horrific fashion.

Throughout season 2 I was utterly convinced that there would be a climatic scene where Nadine would use her mutant strength to lift a car or punch a lodge demon or something. There's gotta be a reason for all of these unwatchable scenes!, I cried. Still crying.

Another layer of hit men will be coming for Dougie then?

Is that going to be the 5th set?? Omg, move it on please. We now have these people who have at one time been after Dougie:

Faraday from Lost, who he owed gambling debts to.

The first round of hitman sent by Lorraine, through Duncan Todd, by Bad Coop.

Ike the Spike sent by Duncan Todd through Bad Coop.

And the ones still to come:

I'm assuming Duncan Todd and Dougie are the double header Bad Coop asked Hutch to do(after the warden of course). He says it's in Vegas.

And now the Casino brothers are after him too. Again, this is Duncan Todd's doing, who seems to work for Bad Coop.

I have no idea what Bad Coop is up too. Why not just get on a bus and go kill him yourself?

I'm scratching my head trying to figure out why they wrote it this way. Why make something so simple feel so complex? Having all these characters doing essentially the same thing dilutes all of them.

Is it just meant to show us that Dougie radiates good fortune and can survive anything?

Luckily the cops, casino guys and Dougie are all entertaining to watch. Otherwise this would be really hard going.

I'm wondering if this would be better if it was all set in one location. Then the characters could be involved in multiple plot lines.

I wish the Vegas cops, the buckhorn cops, and the new twin peaks cops were the same.

Duncan Todd and Red could be one character.

Ike the spike and Richard Horne could be the same person.

I don't know. These are silly ideas when we haven't seen the whole show. But at this point, I wish they had collapsed the cast somewhat.

ME FOR THE PAST FEW WEEKS: "I wonder what the neurologist will discover when Janey-e takes Dougie to the doctor? Will they discover what's blocking Cooper from surfacing? Or maybe that his brain patterns are reversed, or something like that?"

Then Janey-e just takes him to their regular doctor for weight/heart rate/blood pressure. I laughed.

Maybe it will be explained later (maybe it's related to him talking to "Jeffries" and the things he did early on with his computer) but there might be some explanation like he knows Good Coop is in that Dougie state and if he met Bad Coop in person he'd snap out of it. Or maybe the two of them coming in contact with each other could destroy the space time continuum.

It occurs to me that I wonder what our frustrations on the pacing of this show and the appearances/non-appearances of cast members would be like if there were only nine episodes, but they were two hours each. Like, it would still be 18 hours but we'd be done by now. I mean, we didn't see Bad Coop at all this week but if last week's and this week's were the same episode then I think our perception of the pacing would be different.

Of course then Lynch might not have us exactly where he wants us.

All I know is when I realize we're at the roadhouse I'm all like "shit, the episodes nearly over and ____ didn't happen this week either!"

I also fully agree with Jake's theory that the NIN performance in Part 8 was originally supposed to be the end of an extended Part 7.

@Schnapple I'm sure you are right and there's a reason Bad Coop doesn't just confront Dougie. But at this point, balancing an anvil on top of a door would be a more effective way of dealing with him, and it would sure simplify the plot a bunch. Something tells me that roadrunner gag would appeal to Lynch too.

Kyle is doing a great job with Bad Coop and Dougie though. What an amazing face, and, it turns out, body too.

There's still no Audrey or Big Ed in the show after ten episodes! That is just crazy that they are still the main cast members not reintroduced in S3.

And the only thing we know about James is that he is cool and has always been cool.

I wonder what Candy's deal is. The scene of her talking with the insurance guy on the CCTV screen was really well done.

I also loved her absolutely SMASHING Mitchum's face with the remote.

This is becoming the quintessential reaction to episodes in season 3.
