Nick Plays FROM; Currently - Bloodborne

Recommended Posts

FYI but no stream today. We have a date with La La Land.

But tomorrow I ought to be doing a mega-long stream. Probably something like 3-10pm Pacific, with a break or two somewhere in there.

NO GLOVES NO PANTS ONLY STRENGTH

Nick started off the stream today as a normal pink undead with a greatsword and excellent taste in headwear. Nick ended the stream today with no armor on, a ghost clinging to his back, no boss souls in his inventory, and a hammer larger than his character is. I highly encourage going back and watching the VOD around the time of this clip so you can appreciate the madness that chat descended into as well.

Nick uses his words:

Nick learns the importance of asking politely:

Nick has a message for the haters ("the haters" = Kyir):

Nick becomes the cheatin' hitman world champ:

Another recommendation here for the madness. The Nick and the chat begin to go pumped-up insane around here: https://www.twitch.tv/idlethumbs/v/109006811?t=8h17m

Shouldn't Nick do Darklurker before the DLC? :/ I feel like he's going to DPS down the coolest boss in the game if he does it last.

Haha.

I will say that horse totally ruined me.

I wanted the Cloranthy +2 on my SL1 run. Was not worth it, but I did learn that you can use Alluring Skulls to keep the skellies away from you, and in the path of the Chariot.

I just want to point out that I meant the horse was doing most of Nick's life in damage with each attack, not that I doubted Nick's ability to beat a horse he had already beaten.

... caw caw

Been without good Internet for a few days; thank you all for uploading these clips, one day I need to go back and watch everything I missed!

Stay cawing Kyir

The current leaderboard for Nick invasions is:

Me: 3

ProblemMachine: 1

Not much time left to be immortalized for all time as harassing Nick in amusing ways in front of hundreds of people and enhancing his Dark Souls experience. That said, now that he has all his points in STRENGTH I'm not sure we have a chance anymore.

One thing I've learned from DOTA that I think is applicable here is sometimes you counter a thing with the same thing. Enemy team wrecking you with invisibility? Buy a shadow blade. Enemy carry bought a rapier? Buy your own rapier. The same principle applies here. You want to beat Nick's new build? You know what to do: ALL STRENGTH NO GLOVES NO PANTS

Also this isn't exactly the most appropriate place to post this, but I can't think of anywhere better at the moment so it'll have to do, but the phrase From Software's Jodorowsky's Dune popped into my head, and now I wish more than anything else that that was a reality.

I've also thought about From making a Dune game. They'd nail the combat and setting, I'm quite sure of that. A Japanese take on Dune would probably be strange though.

This is basically exactly how I beat him with ALMIGHTY SAGAT, though I inverted the wardrobe requirement. I'm still catching up on the streams though, just watched him beat Velstadt last night.

'though' makes it sound like you don't think that would be exactly what's so awesome about it

Having been passed during the last stream, I resumed playing Dark Souls 2 after four months.  When I got to the Iron Passage, I was too intimidated to try due to the madness of last week, and based on my experience with the first Smelter Demon.  I decided to beat the other two bosses first and complete all other optional Iron King content.  After that, it was time to fight the Smelter Demon.  Knowing that I was likely to be at it for at least an hour, I decided to start listening to Idle Thumbs as I despawned the enemies of both gauntlets over the course of about half an hour.  After clearing them all out, I decided to do a run for the items in the normal path before attempting the boss.  In this item run, I managed to make it to the boss door having only gotten hit once.  It turns out spending all that time to clear the gauntlets wasn't necessary at all.  After crossing the fog barrier, I beat the Smelter Demon in one attempt and it wasn't even close.

As for the video, it probably won't be done by Jan 1st as I'd planned since I still haven't been sent the clips.

Yeah Smelter Demon is tough but is very much a Dark Souls-ass Dark Souls fight. If you're on your game, it's possible to read his moves very effectively. Because I knew the fight so well, I first-tried the blue smelter when I encountered it.

My prediction for the next stream is that Nick will respec again, go back to his bastard sword but have a better balance of stats than he had before, and beat the boss within the first hour or two. Then we can all get back to the good parts of the DLC (plus he'll have the Pharros Mask.)

After some time away from the Idle Thumbs channel, I've been catching up on these streams. The number of times that Nick says he only has a couple of hours in him at the start of the 9 hour Anor Londo stretch is getting pretty funny, knowing what's to come.

I'm mostly caught up now and like... I love Nick, but damned if watching him play Dark Souls doesn't sometimes feel like taking your friend to your favorite Chinese restaurant, watching them order the cheeseburger, then say "eh you can get a better one at In-N-Out".

If he goes back to a more moderate build, I now know first-hand just how badly drakeblood sword + dark resin destroys blue smelter... though he'd have to get souls to make that happen, since someone told him to crunch every single portable soul he has ever had.

Drakeblood sword is really just an incredible weapon. Too bad it's terrible in DS3.
