Winter Wizard Jam Idea Book!

Recommended Posts

At Atari in the arcade golden age, they had books full of ideas that people had dreamed up. My favorite is TOPOROIDS, which was supposed to be a 3D version of Asteroids and it somehow became Crystal Castles. So, I was hoping we could start something like that here for people like me who may be struggling to brainstorm good (and feasible) ideas for the jam. If you aren't participating in the jame, but have a great idea, you can share it here! Your idea might just be the seed someone needs to find that golden idea.

Yes, this is a desperate plea to help with my brainstorming since I have come up with no solid ideas for the jam and it is nigh!

- An ice spider crawls over its web, wrapping and eating snowflies/flakes as they land. Build your combo by getting to each one in time!

- a QWOPalike where you control a wizard's wand from first person perspective surgeon simulator style; anything it touches is turned into a snowball.

- Realistic Hogwarts Simulator: objects are tossed at your avatar, possibly by Jake-o Rodfoy; type the correct spell to prevent them from hitting you! (ie. VITAINVENIEVIA to stop Goldblum's sniggering head).

- ???

  • Customer service simulator where you have to navigate through angry Christians who are upset over hearing the phrase "happy holidays"

Chestnuts roasting over an open FIREWATCH

You start off the game as a Nathan Drake/Lara Croft type character stealing treasures and killing enemies.  Once you "lose a life" you're prosecuted for all of the murders and property damage you've committed and caused, as well as desecrating national heritage sites and stealing priceless artefacts from indigenous peoples.  In the winter.

I recently discovered that you can mod .swf games into Fallout 4, so I'll probably try making one of those for the jam if I have time, in addition to whatever the large team I'm working with makes. I've been thinking about what would be fun and interesting to add to FO4 and have part of an idea for myself, but maybe this knowledge will spark someone else's creative inferno.

Top down action arcade game where living snowballs get larger and slower as they roll around, but then get smaller as they pull off chunks of themselves and throw them at their opponents.

Football Manager Manager, a game where you manage someone's time so that they can play as much Football Manager as they can.

I was going to make a snow simulator where the snow was generated based on words you entered.

In the background i was going to make invisible objects appear that the snow would outline.

Now i'm making something else.

I had a somewhat similar idea, but more RTS-y. I decided it would be too in depth for a jam... This would be a good version of that concept at a reasonable scale.

All of the ideas are great in here. Hope people got some inspiration, like I did. The newly posted diversifiers should also help anyone still uncertain of what to make:

  • Super Briefly: Time is precious. The rounds in your game are completed as quickly as possible. Seconds in, a player is eliminated. You blink, and a victor emerges. Another minute, and the game has brought you to tears.
  • Focused Palette: Make a game using as few colours as possible.
  • Talk is cheap: Make a game which features no words whatsoever
  • Tone Control: The audio in your game is reactive and directly manipulated by the player’s inputs and actions.
  • Designer Notes: Include a director’s commentary in your game.
  • Crowd-sourced: Make a game which features tiny contributions from members of the forum/public. (Check out the team building thread to find willing contributors)
  • “It’s a Baby Game”: Think back to your youth and create a game inspired from a childhood toy or activity. Bonus points if your game can be played by a baby.
  • Hemispherist: Throw another shrimp on the barbie and make a game celebrating the Southern Hemisphere’s beautiful summers. Penguins in bikinis please!
  • The Great Gatling Gunsby: Unfortunately the practice of adapting classic literature to video game started and stopped with Visceral Games’ Dante’s Inferno (2010). Pick up the torch where Visceral dropped it and make a game that “adapts” classic literature. (Need some help? Check out https://twitter.com/ea_presents)
  • Dishonored Holidays: I don’t really know what this means but I think they generally happen a week before the regular holiday #HappyDishonoredHalloween !
