SUMMER GAMES DONE QUICK 2015

July 26 - August 1

SGDQ is almost upon us!  Get ready for lots of awesome speedruns!  And waaaaaay too much use of "hype"!

If you're not aware of what I'm talking about, Games Done Quick is a series of charity video game marathons with events in the winter and summer.  Speedrunners from all over come together in one place and stream a nonstop barrage of high-level gameplay.  This summer's event benefits Doctors without Borders.  Tune in to see some games getting completely taken apart.  The runs will eventually be archived if you can't see it live.

I'm looking forward to PJ's runs because those are always entertaining (although this year they're both at times I won't be able to watch live).  And witwix is doing Boshy again which is sure to be fun as well.  TASBot is doing Ikaruga which sounds like its going to be bonkers.

Unrelated, but Evo also starts on the 17th. (For the unawares, that's the Evolution Championship Series, a huge yearly multi-game competition for fighting game fans.)

Lots of fun livestreams in the near future.

TASBot is doing Ikaruga which sounds like its going to be bonkers.

Oh my god, i need this in my life.

I am happy to see that after last year's insane tetris-a-thon they have blocked an entire hour out for Tetris Bullshit. Excited to see a speedrun of Ori, bummed no one as able to submit an interesting enough Axiom Verge run. I think there are many fewer things I'm interested in seeing this year generally, but at the same time how the hell was I supposed to know I would watch a nearly 3 hour speedrun of Battleblock Theater enraptured the whole time before I actually saw it?

Simple answer?  PJ.  His runs are always a highlight for me.

I forgot about Axiom Verge.  I was also hoping someone would do a run of that this year.  Too bad.

They're starting with another TriHex Yoshi's Island run! I am all about that. Also, another Super Metroid race; I hope it's as interesting as that insane race from AGDQ 2014. These videos will eventually become a constant background while I do other things, so I'm glad to see there's a great lineup.

Hmm, I've not heard of this guy - I'll check out some old VoDs of his runs. :)

I always look forward to these speed run marathons as they're both a show of extremely skilled players and a fun time. If anyone's looking for more recommendations of speed runners I really enjoyed Bonesaw577 (just a genuine person) and witwix (very funny and personable)'s runs in previous GDQs.

This is the speedrun I was talking about. PJ and Mecha Richter explode Battleblock Theater, and the designer Dan and VO artist Stamper are on a skype call for the whole thing. Having trouble embedding a timestamp, but the introduction starts at about 7:30 and the speedrun proper starts at 8:50.

I recommend not losing an entire evening to 3 hours of speedrun, but you'll get a feel for this style.

e: Speed Demos Archive and Speed Marathon Archive have both past ADGQ/SGDQ stuff and Demos has other uploaded speed runs.

I love the Battleblock run, but my favorite PJ run is probably this one from SGDQ last year.

Witwix's stuff is also great.  Besides being good at a hard game, he's also entertaining.  I really liked his I wanna be the Boshy run from this year's AGDQ.  He and several others donated for every death he had, even purposely killing himself several times just for laughs.

As usual I wish they had some more classic PC games in there. I enjoyed the Half-Life and Deus Ex runs previous years.

Yeah, where's the speedrun of Ultima Underworld? Gimme.

But, I would love to see a speedrun of Portal Stories: Mel, because I bet there are some really crazy skips and things. And I think I've got time in my schedule for just one more Dark Souls speedrun...

I played enough of Ikaruga on the GC to be able to s-rank the early stages and 1cc the game, but in the years since, I've gone back to the game multiple times and never been able to get anywhere even remotely close to that.

I think my love of that game has waned somewhat with the realization that it's virtually a rhythm game with how rigidly you have to adhere to your plotted route, and how prescribed-in-the-design that route can seem.

Ikaruga is a beautiful and remarkable thing though, it's still a favorite. (I still use Ikaruga art as a desktop image!)

Apparently during that run somebody used a donation comment to claim that they worked on the game and it "had only one QA tester", which looks to be complete bullshit and also plays into the misunderstanding that huge bugs and glitches are left in games because incompetent developers fail to find them and not because budget/time restrictions keep them from fixing stuff they are well aware of.

I find a lot of the comments on this stream insufferable in how self-congratulatory folk are about games and gamers saving the world or something, but at least for the most of them that's the end of the story.

Pretty much everything but the actual talent on display is frustrating. These Sonic Adventure guys are annoying as hell.

This is my first time ever watching speedrunners and the fact that there is a huge ecosystem of people who build their identity around playing video games at high speed as a performance thing on youtube and on livestreams makes me feel so, so old.

So Ashley's special costume in RE4 is unfathomably disgusting. They've modeled her labia.

I was really enjoying the RE4 run since I love that game, but every time they opened their mouths about Ashley, grooooaaaan.

Not used to using twitch, but do they not archive any more? I'd like to see some of the stuff already run.

I think the standard answer is that it'll all be archived on YouTube, if not also individually highlighted on Twitch.

Maybe I missed out on a bunch of what they were saying, but I only remember the occasional complaint about how terrible it is to have to escort her through half the game.

I enjoyed the RE4 run, and due to some restlessness, listened to most of the Silent Hill 2 run as I was trying to fall asleep, and that sounded good. I'm really looking forward to the Tetris Grand Masters block tonight, especially with the news that a couple of Japanese players are there.
