UK Thumbs

Recommended Posts

It hasn't even been one week.

Their tactic last time and it seems likely will be again this time is to get all of the vile shit done during the first part of the parliament then they'll easy off in time for people to forget and to accept it as the new status quo, at which point they'll change the narrative to one of them actually doing something positive and unless the left really get their act together the cycle will repeat.

It's mentioned in this article that Cameron has said that ideally they'd like a state of permanent austerity, which is almost as disturbing as the comment at the top of this page.

Incidentally if anyone is looking for an Environment Artist outside the UK then I'm very interested.

At least they're planning devolution in Manchester fairly soon. Maybe that'll curb some of the insanity.

Let's just secede from the fucking union already. I am totally ok with a Game of Thrones style northern revolt.

Who watched the Eurovision? I did for the first time ever, and it wasn't that bad! Actually kinda fun. Shame all the songs were shit and dull. England's song, for once, was actually quite good. Although none of them beasts the majesty of Ukraine's 2007 entry:

I watched it, and we had a big sign with a bunch of drinking rules on too.

Feel free to steal for next year:

That's quite the list. I've lived in two of those and visited most of the others but I'm struggling to think of things :)

Falmouth isn't far from the Eden Project which is pretty cool. There's loads of nice beaches in the area, Gyllyngvase the one that's sort of in Falmouth, is ok but quite small and naturally gets very busy (also the restaurant on the beach is super overpriced). Great Shakes is awesome, mmm Jaffa Cake milkshake.

While you're in Newcastle you should wander down to the Sage, it's a very cool piece of architecture. I can't think of much to do in Newcastle though, I was too poor and working most of the time so didn't do much...

If you like curry then Akbar's in York is great.

If I think of anything else I'll let you know :)

It really depends what you consider nice...

I spent a few years in Southampton as a student, so I know all the scummy but cheap fun places there, and I work in Manchester, but frankly if you're not into football, there's not much here that you can do that you can't do better somewhere else...Manchester is sort of like a watered down version of London, with even more rain.

Cambridge has a couple of places I'd advise to eat at: Tatties and Hot Numbers.

Tatties is a small local resturant that specialises in Baked potatoes, and is kinda special to the university, for whatever reason.

Hot Numbers is on Mill Road, so it's a bit of a way out, but it's a great little Jazz cafe. check their website for live events, as it's always cool, and totally packed.

Also, If you're there on a Thursday or Friday (I think), there's a pop-up food court on station road, where there's an amazing gormet burger van called Steak and Honour. It's one of the best burgers I've ever eaten.

As for things to do in Cambridge, try a punt. Whatever you do, don't take any offers from people who are trying to sell you a punt on the street, there are two 'official' punting companies that have huge docks on the river bank, where they'll tell you interesting shit about the uni as well as a peaceful punt along the river. Go in the summer, but fair warning - it's really busy.

You can also go check out the uni's, most of them are open for visitors, but you have to pay, I think. Also check out that huge golden humping clock.

I don't know Manchester very well, but I know that there's a Red's there, which has the best burger I've ever eaten, the Doughnut burger. It's simply divine.

In York, check out Betties Tea room. It's a beautiful tea room, that's english as all heck, and has delicious food. Also the York branch is also really famous, as well as busy. There will always be a queue outside, but don't be fooled, the queue moves quickly.

Also there's the York Viking Centre, which is pretty fun to look around.

Yeah, fuck this, and fuck my stupid oven of an office. It's basically impossible to work or do anything other than stare into the middle distance past by mid-afternoon.

I decided to skip work altogether and do some work from home with no shirt on and the AC on max.

Also, thanks for the recommendations! They were especially useful in Cambridge.

Yeah, my boss and one other guy have been working from home a lot recently. Unfortunately the rest of us aren't allowed, because we're children or something.

While you're all having a heatwave, most of central Scotland was covered in thunderstorms tonight.

Outside it's 30+, inside it's 21. You'd think it's good insulation but my house is cold and drafty in winter
