My availability is going to be sparse that weekend. 10 year high school reunion.

Ping Pong looks... weird. Definitely want to check it out.

Yeah, Ping Pong is definitely going on my list right now. Looks super cool.

I'm going to try and watch Time of Eve at some point next week and see how my availability works out. I've been really interested in this from the start but the timing has been poor for me and I have a ton of anime blind spots that coincided with what you guys wanted to talk about :P. Hopefully it's not too late for new people to get involved.

Pff you think I have any idea what I'm gonna say before the cast starts?

I know what I'm going to talk about! It's called Ergo Proxy.

Yeah, a major goal for me is to keep participation in our open/rotating panel format so that we don't go too far down any rabbit hole of specialist knowledge. For all of that, I know I was really bad about just dropping shows and their pedigrees in Episode 00 (Don't Feed the Dragon), but the next episode was better, so everyone should feel welcome to put their two cents into the Doodle.

If it's any consolation, I'm obviously on the "knows more than the average person" side of things in anime, and I still don't know half the names you drop!

But seriously, it doesn't matter if your knowledge is limited. In fact, I think that's a valuable perspective!

I'm on the side of only knows some anime and mostly talks about the stuff in the context of movies and books, so maybe I'll pop in anyway!

But I have no idea what my weekend looks like next week, so I'll get on that poll Monday or so.

And I don't know like 90%

All I have for my anime cred is FLCL, Eva, Gundams, etc...  I can go deep in that Gundam hole though.

I know nothing of Gundam but considering that it does unquestionably occupy a big old chunk of the collective otaku culture surrounding anime for a certain generation i'd love to hear it talked about. So if your game for it i'll pester gorm to schedule a gundam show for the future because that is something id love to see done.

Yes pleaseee~ :)

Gundam franchise also went through some serious variation in tone and style so it might have to be narrowed down a bit... like there is a huge gulf between 0080 and G-Gundam for example (and both being rather drastic departure from other Gundams that have this strong theme of trans-humanism).

I recommend 0080 War in the Pocket to everyone.

"war in the pocket" sounds 100% like it should be the name of a some indie stratergy game reviewed in a 3MA episode

I have started watching like 3 gundam series, and stopped after the first episode. I think the one I really liked is unicorn.

It'd be cool if we did one on Unicorn. I'd love to have an excuse and watch it all. I'd love to hear your thoughts on it too. The other one I started watching was Ace I think? And then there was one more on like a deserted Earth with super crappy mechs.

I just finished the pod. It was really weird for me to not be on it! But also cool, because it was entertaining listening to other people talk. I'm liking Codicer's little added chat at the end. It made me chuckle.

Three points I noted down (because I'm weird) when listening:

1) You mention Lip Flaps in this episode, and didn't react to it. Made me laugh

2) When you mentioned you were suprised that the female writer wrote Vash to be too lewd, would that possibly be a knock on effect from writing Witch Blade? That anime is pretty ecchi, from what I wan gather.

3) So vash is kinda like Edward Newgate, but as a cowboy? Doesn't he have the power to destroy the world too?

1. They did react!

just the reaction wouldn't have made any sense to anyone who didnt know about our proto name so /cut :)

2. I actually watched witch blade a few years back out of curiosity of what  a anime would do with something which felt like it was from such a strong american tradition of comics, I don't think it was much more ecchi than Kill La Kill (make of that comment what you will!)

3. The show did make me want to watch Trigun but annoyingly its not on any of the streaming channels in the uk, its always a big kick in the teeth to look at how many more showsthings like hulu or netflix give US folks access to.

Alright! For a variety of reasons, we've postponed the recording of episode two to next weekend. Here's the signup link for times, if you're interest: http://doodle.com/aw4f85pvcgdu2rqc

As has been alluded earlier in this thread, we'll be watching Time of Eve, a movie about robots and humanity. It was available on Crunchyroll for free, but now it's not, except for the first "act," which you should watch if you're interested: http://www.crunchyroll.com/time-of-eve

REMINDER TO EVERYBODY

Hey this is happening this weekend, as far as I know, so sign up if you want in. U:

Didn't end up watching Time of Eve, as I watched part of the first episode and it didn't grab me. Instead I watched most of Ping Pong. Not sure if this disqualifies me from being on the show. I could always just run away once you start talking about it.

I think the best thing would to wait until we do a Ping Pong show :D (which hopefully we will do) maybe with some Kemonozume talk too!

Just listened to the second episode. I am definitely enjoying listening to a podcast about something I don't know anything about, because I can't get mad and disagree with you. Also Trigun and Dragonball Z are two of the few animes I've seen, so it was nice to be able to follow the conversation.

I will say, in response to the idea that westerns took influence from Kurosawa but it doesn't go the other way, that's not really true. At the very least most of Kurosawa's samurai films were responses to John Ford westerns of the 30's and 40's. So Kurosawa's influence on westerns was actually just that influence folding back in on itself.

Also, isn't your music from Trigun? I've thought it was this whole time but you never mentioned it on this episode so now I don't know.

It is! My college roommate, who's really into music production and now works at Harmonix, agreed some months ago to write a soundalike for our podcast from the Trigun soundtrack, which we both loved way back when, but I think the announcement of Rock Band 4 has led him to forget that promise. If a few more episodes get made, I'll probably get around to reminding him.

Hi the previous episode is still being edited, but we're recording a new one this upcoming weekend, although it's the 4th so I expect some Americans won't be available, but hey, whatever, here you go sign up if you're interested.

Our spotlight is going to be Dallos. It's apparently the first ever OVA! It might be good, or it might not. No one knows. Look at that gun, though.
