Horror meets Strategy ?
Cristian posted a topic in Strategy Game DiscussionHey guys, I am curious about your opinion. I want to make a Real-time strategy game but with a twist, I want to add to it a horror/survival element to it. Yes I know there is a game called "They Are Billions" that includes RTS gameplay + zombies and it is good but I do not find there any solid horror elements. So my question is : What game design elements would you combine from the RTS category with the horror category? As an extra note, the view is limited to the top-down view and possible it is limited to the squad cap limit. And as a side question: DO you know any real-time strategy games that are mixed with horror/survival elements that may inspire me? So far regarding RTS my main inspiration is C&C and starcraft SO far regarding plot theme, my main inspiration is Xcom(game) and the movies "Aliens", "The thing" , "Phantoms", "The Mist" thank you PS: this is my first post here so also THANK YOU for letting me join

The Ultimate Playthrough, Metal Gears!?

It's been years since I've played most of them and I've always had a soft spot for these dumb games. Do they hold up!? Probably! I'm going to tackle them in original release order: Metal Gear Metal Gear: Solid Snake Metal Gear Solid Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeros I aim to finish them at the rate of about one a month and I invite you to play along. It's going to be La Li Lu Le Loads of fun! First on the list, Metal Gear is available with the HD version of MGS3: Snake Eater, MGS3: Subsistence on PS2 and the MSX.

As they say on the website: "Brigador is an isometric vehicular action game. Choose the right vehicle and weapons to suit your play style, and face off against the occupying factions. Discover tactics and unlock new vehicles and weapons as you clear the city or die trying, then do it all over again." It has been compared to Syndicate, Crusader: No Remorse, and Jungle Strike. Despite being in early access the game play loop is already tight and refined, more along the lines of Hotline Miami. You can dive in for a few minutes of action, or alternately spending a couple of hours trying to achieve the perfect run. One thing that it is not is a twin-stick shooter. There are several systems being modeled under the hood, including ballistics and penetration, which means that it takes skill to make sure that you don't over or under shoot your targets. That along with the tank-style controls, means that each successful run feels well-won. There are a handful of very different vehicles to start off with: tanks, mechs, and anti-grav; all of which require their own play style and tactics. They will be including more in subsequent updates, along with maps, and more enemy factions. This is a crime: http://fractalsoftworks.com/ Basically a top down 2D space combat game that models the combat at a fine granularity. Weapons have fire rates, damage, type, velocity, cool down, thermal waste, accuracy, size, skew rate, damage curves, and sometimes even varies these based on how recently the weapon was fired and other such things. Damage is modeled to a similar degree with shields absorbing different types of damage to varying degrees before collapsing, armor being hammered where weapons strike until taking failures of your weapons and systems become a certainty. It even has supply levels and combat readiness per a ships, so there are battleworn workhorse ships that go from battle to battle with very little fuss and finicky high tech ships that need a steady feed of supplies and must undergo significant maintenance between fights less you enter battles with unreliable systems and weapons that refuse to go online. What's interesting about having all this detail is that it gives combat a real sense of weight that most games that deal with similar subject matter never quite capture. It takes time to accelerate to speed, it takes time to change direction, it takes time to rotate your weapons into position, it takes time for your heavy rounds to reach their target. You often get into these situations where you're fighting to keep a situation under control. The enemy is pounding on your shields which are converting all that damage into thermal waste and it's rapidly reaching the point where it'll overload your systems. You can't lower them because the armour on the front quarter of the ship is in shambles and you're having troubles maintaining fire because your weapons are also generating heat. Do you slowly bring your ship about so there will be fresh armour exposed but moving the enemy out of your main batteries firing arcs? Do you disable your ship and vent all the heat hoping that you can bring everything back online before the hull collapses? Maybe it would be best to just drop the shields so you're heat dissipation is high enough to fire as fast as you can. The level of detail of all these interlocking systems really make the game. It has been described as Mount & Blade in space, and that's not an unfair comparison. It's definitely worth checking out if you're into this kind of thing, even in it's unfinished state.
