  1. Greetings.

Has anyone else been playing/played this through recently?

To put it into context, it's a new game that's recently launched on the Nintendo DS, and it's a point and click...visual novel...mystery...thriller...thing. It's very reminiscent to Hotel Dusk, if anyone played that.

What I can say however, is how highly I recommend the game. It's a very brooding, dark tale which draws parallels to the "Saw" franchise, except it's not terrible. It tells the story of 9 people who were captured and put on a ship, and have to find their way out by solving puzzles (Isn't that always how it is?). While the gameplay may be somewhat transparent, mainly consisting of Phoenix Wright style "Evidence hunt" sections, where you're doing the classic point and click "Find items to combine with other items", and Layton-esque number puzzles/perception shifting puzzles, the games strength is on its relatively dynamic story telling.

Essentially, there purpose is to find the door with the number "9" on it (The numbers 1-9 play a central role in the game, it's to do with numericals and digital roots of numbers, pretty intuitive). The game plays a lot like a choose your own adventure book, asking you to pick which door you want to go in, who you want to go with (Down to some pretty defined selections, but still...) and other things like that.

I'd definitely recommend that if you're a fan of point and clicks, visual novels, good story, atmosphere/character development, you should really give this a look into!

Oh also, there's several endings in the game, and I've played through it...4 times in as many days now. There's a really lovely option when you beat the game which lets you clearsave, and when you start the game again through that, you "Continue with your memories", making it very clear which options you previously picked, so you can explore all of the dialogue /endings/ character developments, and expediates this by allowing you to race through previously seen dialogue. A nice little touch.

So far, I've ended the game with (Very heavy story spoilers):

1st time) I was very close to the ending, and I got stabbed in the back and died. Bad ending

2nd time) Again, very very close to the end, but I got an axe lodged in my torso. Bad ending.

3rd time) I got knifed again! Christ!

4th time) Okay, a little more closure this time. I got the "Safe ending" where I found a little note from Zero, discovered "Ace" was a big player in the story, even murdering several people, yet still coming to an inconclusive conclusion. Planning to get the "True ending" tomorrow.

  2. I'll get in on this thread, actually

So here's my problem. I've got a 222GB drive in my laptop (Probably a 250 after formatting and such). After doing a directory scan, it's showing as in the image, or 153.38 in use. Now, knowing that I have 37.7GB free, I know I'm no rocket scientist, but 153.38 and 37.7 do not make 222.

Can anyone offer any insight as to how I've lost that 30/40GB?

    Much love.

  3. I'm actually more seriously considering leaving the UK, after I'm done with my degree. Canada, the US or Germany, seem like the best options, anyone got any advice on immigration?

It's a very romanticised idea, if you have enough money to afford it.

  4. So has anyone been playing this apart from me? I started it this morning, and I guess here are my initial impressions:

The game takes place 30 years after the first game, and it directly follows on. You play as the children (so far) of the first games protagonists, and it's your basic "Prepare to be adventurer" type fare. It's really good so far (3hrs~), however the game can be overly verbose at times with reaffirming your objectives or the history of the franchise. Despite this however, it's shaping up to be very cool. The sound design is top notch, it seems to be a lot of remixed tunes, and the graphics look lovely. Think Final Fantasy 4, with no voice acting.

The combat, one of the core concepts of why I loved the originals so much comes back in fine form. It plays exactly as you remember it, right down to the Djinii and Psyenergy, which is for better or worse, I guess. I was hoping in a way for there to be an ENTIRELY new cast of Djinii, but it appears to be the same stuff as before.

So is anyone else playing this? Any thoughts, or questions for me?

  5. Met my girlfriends parents for the second time yesterday. Her mother cooked an amazing dinner, then I wow'ed them with a cake I brought from home, which was unbelivably delicious. I'm invited back. Everythings going great!

  6. So how did people find the MLG Dallas event, I've picked up a little from Jinro (and other Terran players), mostly scouting with buildings and strong forward bases. I've also been playing 2v2 games with a school friend, teaching him how to play, when to attack etc.

The QXC replay pack was VERY enlightening.

  7. BUY BOTH VERSIONS! :(

    :gaming:

It's just kind of annoying really. I'd love to play it, it sounds terrific, but I can't be bothered going all the way back to my parents house to get my 360, just because MS got an early exclusivity deal. I hope that when it hits PC/Wii, I'll still be interested. I guess it's that the most, I want to play it when I'm hyped, and it's relevant, not at some arbitrary date.

  8. I love zug zug. It's actually part of the WarCraft universe. You don't have to draw meaningless lines to real-world celebrities to get it. It's just a funny goofy property of Orcs in the WarCraft world.

I think that's one of the things that endears me to Warcraft as a franchise, as opposed to World Of Warcraft as a closed off little thing. It's just the amount of super Warcrafty doofy humor they put in sometimes. A lot of it, for me personally, stems from the ridiculous barks that the WC3 units shout. Admittedly, WoW has some of those, but it's not really the same when every 5th line is some sort of internet meme. Or a dwarf being drunk.

  9. Making something cliff-side like that would be enough to drag me back in.

For the moment, I've burnt out pretty quickly; I seem to enjoy the exploring/spelunking most of all, as I'm not clever or patient enough to build all this interesting/clever shit you lot have come up with to date.

I also enjoyed the first bit of skinning I've done in ages, too, as it was nice and quick and I like the chunky, lo-fi nature of Minecraft's models and textures.

I've recently made a mountain side fortress, with lava waterfalls. it's very menacing.

  10. I just watched a movie called "Mr Nobody(2009)".

It was fantastic. It tells several stories which revolved around the choices in which a young boy made, and how they shape his future. The plot bounces between these 4/5 different possible "Futures", and ends in a magnicifcent finale.

The movie has a very strange and disjointed sense of narrative explaination, which I think makes the film very watchable. It reminded me of a movie I saw a while ago called "Wristcutters", although I suppose you could draw some parallels to Donnie Darko, and that kind of movie. A strange sense of muted surrealism makes the entire picture strangely entrancing. In essence, it plays with several philosophical themes, such as the reality and illusion of choice, and what it can or can't lead to in the end. For example, one of the futures he lives in revolves around the concept of the butterfly effect-in fact, the entire movie plays with this concept, and I really enjoyed it.

I would really recommend people check it out if you like sci-fi, drama, or a movie from a brilliant Belgian director. Or if you just like to have movies make you think a little.
