  1. I've got a crappy desk and an even shittier chair so I have to put my pillows on it so I can actually reach the keyboard comfortably. I admit I might have tidied up a tad before I took this picture, but it wasn't anything too crazy just a few glasses and sea shell pieces all over my desk...

  2. You're welcome :)

Wow, that raises so many questions! Does that make me a bad person? It's the curse of scientific curiosity :P

Ask away. I didn't discuss any scientific whatsits with him. In fact I barely even noticed it was him in the first place until a customer mentioned that they'd seen a famous "Stephen Someone" in the store, and only then did I realise who he meant. Needless to say I was pretty star struck. Everyone was pretty considerate and just left him to drink his coffee.

I'm also mildly annoyed that my browser has called me out on my spelling of "realise" but not on "whatsits".

  3. Thread necromancy: does anyone have any good suggestions for basic video editing apps for an iPhone? Essentially I want to make a video of me learning a beat on the drums/a section on guitar and film a 5-7 second clip as I learn it and progress until I finally have it down. It's mainly for my own motivational reasons, and I find the learning process for any subject really fascinating. So yeah, just a video editing app that I can string and drum a bunch of individual clips together? I might even upload the video on here just so everyone can see my sick drumming skills.

P.S. I've just started learning to play drums so I actually suck at them,

  4. I'm only reading the LoTR books for the first time at the moment, and while I'm only up to the second book, this game is a pretty accurate representation of what I imagine Mordor to be. Just a hellish place full of ugly treacherous cretins. I also have no real affinity for the books or the films so it doesn't bother me too much. It's a shame they had to slap LoTR on this game and piss a lot of people off instead of coming up with their own IP.

I think the game looks pretty interesting, but I totally agree that the whole "these guys will remember you and shout generic lines at you about how you gave them nasty boo boos" thing will be incredibly over hyped in the marketing, and have no major/noticeable effect in the game.

Talking about it looking pretty similar to AC I saw this on the interwebs earlier today. I have no idea how this shit works so he could just be assuming too much, but it's always more interesting when something you suspect is true. It reminds me more of ManBat, The.

  5. Well I just won my first online game and it was incredibly fun. It came down to 2 vs. 1, with me on the low end of the odds. I ran away into the corner and used the horn to get all my archer's will back, and then I just picked off their 2 characters due to them having low armor. I had no idea what the horn did, but thanks to the symbols on the horn looking like will symbols I just clicked away until I got 'em all back.

  6. Well I just spent an hour or so on Banner Saga:Factions and it was pretty damn fun. I didn't win a single match, but I (think) I still enjoyed myself. I don't have a clue what most of the classes do and how best to utilise them in relation to what my opponent is doing, but I'm sure that will come with time. If anyone fancies (read: Clyde) teaching me a few trick or two I should be on around 6:30pm GMT.

  7. I really want to play this game. I recently discovered that I love strategy games, specifically ones where you control single units such as Final Fantasy Tactics or XCOM:EU. I threw away way too many hours playing Final Fantasy Tactics on an emulator. I might have to pick this up in a couple of weeks when I've paid my rent.

I'm glad I know who the invincible boss is now though because that would have infuriated me. I'm the kind of guy who would constantly reload my saves just before the boss killed me thinking "what the fuck am I supposed to do?" only to realise hours later that I was supposed to die all along...

  8. I've checked out some of the Game Theory videos and some of them are pretty interesting. They do get pretty damn obscure sometimes though, like even too much for me. The narrator's voice is a killer for me sometimes. He seems to flit between Don Hertzfeldt levels of droning-American-deadpan-soullessness and comically-over-the-top-commercial-voice-over-long-vowel-American They're filling the void for now, but if anyone else has any other suggestions that'd be awesome.

  9. I didn't notice the sound too much, but then again I was playing Skyrim while the Thumbs were casting in the background.

I didn't really feel that sorry for Michael Bay (probably because I've only heard them describing the fiasco, and not watched any videos), but my heart goes out to the guy who got mugged while listening to the cast. That shit sucks man. It's only happened to me once and luckily it turns out I knew the guy who had me at knifepoint and was clad in a balaclava so he stopped mid-crime.

It does make me think if I was killed while listening to any cast I was a fan of I'd want the hosts to know I'd died while listening to them.* I wonder if they think about all the bizarre scenarios that they've unintentionally cast over.

*that sounds super creepy. I died in a sacrificial ritual to the cast!

  10. Jon, not specifically right now. Just in the GOTY episodes he just sends a lot of redundant stuff and seems to argue over pointless stuff. I know it's not a great way of explaining myself, but it's been a while. It's not just in those episodes though, I've heard it in other episodes too. I'm still yet to finish that series of episodes so if I hear anything I'll be sure to quote it here so I don't sound like a whiney dickhead with no examples.

Justin, I've just checked out a couple minutes of that video and it seems interesting. I'll try it out before I sleep and let you know if it worked as the night cap I'm looking for.

  11. I know this isn't strictly the right topic but I didn't want to make a whole new thread for it. I've been watching a lot of AVGN videos recently before I go to sleep. They're normally a pretty good length, like 10-15 minutes, and I mainly just watch them to see how truly awful some of these games can be. I don't think he's got a particularly interesting or funny presenting style, and his constant mention with feces must be indicative of a psychological obsession with the stuff, but I do love watching stuff about obscure games/accessories/consoles. However, I'm pretty sick of them now. Does anybody know of any sort of video series with similar running time focused on video games? I've watched Ego Raptor's Sequilitis and thought it was incredibly interesting, but he seems pretty determined to never make any more of them. Also, the Escapist's videos are way too short and I really only watch Yahtzee and Movie Bob.

Back on topic: Did anybody else listen to Giantbomb's award show episodes? I nearly stopped listen (and in fact did on a few occasions) due to some of the stuff Brad Shoemaker was saying. That guy is so pedantic I did some actual, real life, honest to god eye rolling at some of his arguments.

  12. I'm really enjoying this game. It's become my game of choice when I just feel like playing something for anywhere between 5 minutes and 2 hours. However, I'm finding a keyboard setup quite difficult to use. It recommends using a controller but there's no way I'm forking out for one. I'm finding the 2nd temple particularly difficult where you have to keep changing back and forth between the two realms as you jump. I'm not sure if it's because I'm not used to playing platformers on a keyboard or if I've got crappy key configurations.

  13. However, Rick did invite her to the concert, right? That still expresses interest. I feel like, for whatever reason, that there was interest from both sides. I think Rick mentions something about his fiancee's crappy music taste or something. That seems quite flirtatious to me. And depending on who organised the couple's retreat could say a lot about the mother's relationship with Rich. Either she didn't want to go to Rich's wedding and purposefully booked the retreat for that weekend because she thought it would be too painful, or the father was suspicious of Rich's relationship with his wife and he purposely booked it then.

  14. Oh yeah, I totally forgot about seeing the thing about saving their marriage. The only thing I found was the book though so I didn't really pay too much attention to it. Who do you think was initializing the attempt to patch up their marriage? The father doesn't really seem like the type and he's probably just way too focused on trying to get his writing career back on track. Do you think the mother actually had a full blown affair with Rich?

  15. So I've been thinking about this game a lot since I finished it but there's one thing that bugs me:

If the parents aren't home then where exactly are they? Have I missed something and it just full on tells you or is there not really an explanation for where they are? I'm fine with either one but it just kind of bugs me. How much time is supposed to elapse between you getting home and you discovering Sam has left? Do the parents know she's left? Have they gone looking for her and that's why she's not home?

  16. I doubt Steve still reads this thread now that he's flying about in a golden helicopter. I heard you can't read while flying a helicopter. But yeah,

the whole time I was playing that game I was thinking "... and this is the room where there'll be someone hanging." or "how can rain and darkness be so creepy?" I'm not disappointed at all really, I enjoyed the ride and I enjoy it when the twist is there is no twist. There doesn't have to be one, it's just incredibly satisfying when someone pulls one off successfully.

  17. This game struck a lot of emotional chords with me that no games ever have really. I've just returned from a trip around Europe (while being from England I don't consider myself "European") and I was often thinking about home and I sent a few postcards back there. I always thought about them just being stuck to the fridge and it was really interesting to see similar mementos scattered around the house in Gone Home. I don't really attach much sentimental value to objects, but I've got a folder from each of my trips abroad and I haven't looked back at my European one yet as I think I'd find it too much to handle right now. It seems like I played this game at the perfect point in my life as there's just so many themes that stick with me that wouldn't have been any where near as relevant years or even months down the road: coming home, missing someone you love, sentimentality, the importance we assign to places as individuals etc.

    Anyway,

right at the end of the game I was expecting something really sinister to happen. Like their parents wouldn't let her go so Sam killed them both with Lonnie and hid their bodies somewhere in the house. I don't know what that says about me as a person, or what I expect out of a game, but I'm not sure I wasn't just a little subconsciously disappointed there wasn't more of a "twist" or "surprise". Unless I'm a total idiot and there was something I missed. I think I got this feeling from all the "Psycho house" back story stuff and most likely from the Thumbs strongly suggesting there was a ghost in the game. I know they were joking, but I assumed they were joking as a means to cover some sort of other weird turn in the game's story.

All in all I'm incredibly I got to play this game and I'll be happy to play many more that will inevitably be influenced by it.

  18. Is anyone else having trouble with Steam right now? I assume it's due to the ridiculous influx they'll receive from L4D2 being free, but it has severely disrupted my ability to spend money on Shelter and Skyrim which is a tad disappointing as I have to go to sleep now. Oh well, if any kind soul manages to buy Shelter as a gift I'll happily refund them the £1.74.

  19. Maybe it does. Or maybe we could usher in the new era of "SHOILER". I bet you 300 of my unflagging-forever-secure English Pounds to a wheelbarrow of which ever puny currency you wager in that I can get all 5 badgers to the end in less than 0.212423686940222222222222222222 nanoseconds.

  20. you'll get a special gift from Valve when your account turns 10

Elmuerte, I have come to expose you as the sick twisted liar that you are. On the 27th of October my account turned 10 and I received no such special gift. Feel the shame, you sicko.

  21. So far I've bought Fez and Far Cry 3. However, there was a problem with my uPlay account and Ubisoft have yet to get back to me so I haven't really played Far Cry 3. I was holding out on Rogue Legacy but that seems to have back fired as they've reduced the % off. I'm planning on getting Fall Out New Vegas: Ultimate Edition which is currently at 40%, which is a pretty great deal, but Steam sales have ruined me as I feel like I could wait it out until the 3rd of January and get a better bargain. Let's blame it all on Valve. Damn you Valve and your ridiculously good deals!

What do other people have on their non-commital wish list?

I'll probably buy Shelter if it wins the current vote (which it probably won't) just for the art style alone. I also want to get Skyrim but the £18 asking price for the Ultimate Edition seems a bit steep as I've heard the DLC is pretty naff. I might just buy the plain ol' version for £7.50. My dream would be for Enemy Within to get a big cut, but I doubt that'll happen saying as it came out so recently.

  22. I tend to listen to the Thumbs on my way into work or when I'm walking anywhere really, any time when I'm not actually doing any other activities. I do occasionally miss a shit load of the cast when my coworkers start talking to me on my lunch break and I begrudgingly take my headphones out only to return to the cast mid-conversation.
