  1. I really enjoyed this! I've been a fan of Soren's design discussions since I bought Civilization Chronicles, which included a DVD containing a video of him and Dorian Newcomb discussing their approach to prototyping Civ 4.

The discussion was pretty great ... it was interesting to hear Pardo's thoughts on desiging SC2, Brood War and WC3. That said, damn does he have an ego. I guess I can't blame him, given his pedigree, but a lot of it comes off as: "Everything sucked until I showed up and then it was great because I'm the best."

  2. I'll stop making jokes then sad%20face.jpg

I'm okay with jokes ... I like jokes! I just didn't interpret your tone as anywhere near joking. More sardonic than anything, which I guess is kind of like joking.

Anyway, it's fine by me that you don't like it. I don't really like it either. Your interpretation of those who were not as passionate as you was what mostly threw me. It was as if you were upset that we couldn't agree about how purple the purple was.

  3. And youmeyou, how can you say #1 is dull looking? It's never dull to be looking at some sweet tits! Am I right, guys?
Why are you being so aggressive? I'm trying to have a reasonable discussion about this. I agree with you on most of these issues, I just felt that the levels of reaction were surprising. You're arguing against people that don't even exist in this discussion. I don't see how: "I don't see the big deal." gets put on the same level as: "Titties! Fuck yeah!"
Yes, I'm sure this instance of cleavage is actually totally thematically appropriate and not a fat load of pandering to the male gaze, even though from what I understand, period appropriate clothing didn't show off tits like that and even though she looks ridiculous with her boobs poking out like that.
I wasn't specifically saying that this case wasn't "a fat load of pandering to the male gaze". It likely is! However, from my perspective, I just didn't it as being that big of a deal.

I also don't think that just covering her up does anything to solve the larger problem of poorly developed female characters in video games. That's likely a separate discussion that I fear getting into, though.

  4. And then, one poorly worded phrase from ThunderPeel scared Twig off forever, and we never had to hear his defenses of overly sexualized video game character costumes again. The end.

I really can't see how Twig's: "I didn't realize this was a big deal." could be seen as a defense of overly sexualized video game character costumes. For what it's worth, I don't really see the big deal, either. Of course, I get that female video game characters have a strong tendency to be over sexualized, but I don't think that necessarily means that every instance of cleavage means that it's some recreation of a teenager's wet dream.

  5. http://www.firstmenonthemoon.com/

This might mean more to people who are very familiar with the Apollo program, but I'm hoping that it's interesting for people with even just a little bit of interest. From the About page:

This project is an online interactive featuring the
    Eagle
lunar landing. The presentation includes original Apollo 11 spaceflight video footage, communication audio, mission control room conversations, text transcripts, and telemetry data, all synchronized into an integrated audio-visual experience.

    A few things worth noting:

    1. The running time is about 18 minutes, I think.
    2. There are little tooltips all over the place to tell you what the acronyms and jargon mean.
    3. Check Armstrong's heart rate every now and then (bottom-centre section of the screen, top-right corner of that section).
    4. The 1202 and 1201 program alarms were caused by a faulty radar switch config, resulting in the memory blocks filling up and causing the software to reboot. A related and scarier story was the descent of Apollo 14, where the software got into a state of auto-abort-the-landing. MIT had to "remotely" patch a fix to the software to ignore the error.
    5. The fuel warnings were mostly erreneous. The warnings came up because of sloshing around as a result of their descent angle.

  6. Finished the book and cast today. I've only perused some of this thread, so maybe this has already been discussed.

I'm surprised that the reincarnation interpretation surprised Chris and Sean. I thought it was pretty overt with the comet birthmark, Luisa Rey being so connected to the Cloud Atlast Sextet, and some other parts that I can't quite recall. Particularly, I thought this line at the end of the second Somni-451 chapter really drilled it home:

What do you wish to download?

A certain disney I began, one nite long ago in another age.

That said, I do agree that it would have functioned better without all those particular connections. I liked the connectedness, but would have preferred connections of happenstance, rather than what seemed to be fate-like occurrences.

Still, I found the whole read to be very entertaining. I also felt really dumb reading The Adam Ewing chapters. I was referencing a dictionary ever third sentence.

  7. You and Sean talking about budgeting the money and how you hope to use it should be listened to by anyone in the "derp podcasts don't need that money" group.
I've never really understood this attitude. It's not about people needing x money for a podcast. It's about people willing to give y money for the podcast (and the rewards).

  8. I think it's a real shame that someone made something creative which is now being hijacked and run into the ground by others.
I've taken a bit of shit from the other people who were involved. I probably should have conferred with them first, but it was just so old that I didn't think anyone would mind.

It would be nice if people could leave the Wikipedia page alone (www.wanderdonkey.com is a wonderful addition, though), but I knew this would happen going in. I just thought it would be worth sharing and that the repercussions of the page being mucked with or even deleted would be worth the entertainment that other people got out of it.

  9. I'd like to take credit for creating that Wander Donkey page, but it was mostly a friend of mine. We were all laughing at the game pages that were created and I came up with the . Then a friend of mine decided to run with it, and came up with just about everything you see there. Someone even created some shitty boxart, but it eventually got removed (wait for it) ... because it did not have the proper copyright information on it.

Ok so I am that IP address on wikipedia. Actually my work is. That's another story. Here and now I commit to waging a war against page only if someone here commits to legitamizing the page as much as possible. I just find it so funny how wiki has this notability criteria but once a page is established they could care less if its accurate
It's been sitting there for like, 2-3 years, almost completely untouched. We were waiting for it to get slapped down, but nobody seemed to bother.

  10. I played the demo of Fuel and also found it boring. There is nothing interesting in that world... nothing...
    From here:
After downloading the demo, I began free drive mode and picked a direction and took off– and drove and drove, through the scrub and the dirt. The sun began to set; my bike’s headlight came on automatically. I drove. Suddenly wondering what the hell I was doing, I quit and deleted the demo, intending never to return to it, but later that evening I was seized by the idea that perhaps Fuel had unintentionally created the first game that dove into the depths of existential absurdity, a disguised meditation on the ultimate pointlessness of everything. Might Fuel actually be a game that explores the place of mankind in the cosmos by placing him in this ludicrously illogical, staggeringly gigantic world for no apparent reason? Was Fuel the secret Waiting for Godot of video games?

  11. So about those witches selling that spell, are you sure that they weren't trying to swindle you? I kind of think it'd be awesome for a game like that to sell you a spell that does nothing at all, except maybe make the less superstitious civilizations lose respect for you.
I was thinking something similar, but instead, it would be a way to keep your peasants in line.

"Plow your fields or the 3 Witches will steal your first born."

The negative effect could be that as knowledge grows, the people in your city might realize what's going on and revolt.

  12. It's actually got to the point where we can't make up funny ones faster than they do.

I have a text file with a queue made of some of my favorite made up ones that haven't been posted to the twitter account yet, as well as all of the real ones with links. There are more of the latter; it's like IGN have thrown themselves wholeheartedly into it recently :tfart:

The podcast should have some sort of contest where they ask: "IGN or Not IGN". Maybe just Jake throw random quotes at Chris or something.
