  1. The thing with games is that provide an arena for the player to experience things in rather than a direct static one. This means that the player is very much responsible for message they take from the game.

The other thing is that games require interaction which means that they have to provide some kind of incentive/ positive feedback to keep the player interested. This means that setting up any kind of negative experience causes all kinds of problems.

  2. Hmm, this game hasn't been reviewed much, but according to Metacritic and GameRankings the average score hovers around 70%.

Is that good, I honestly have no idea how that relates to it being good or not

  3. Given the relative market share it's probably not worth the cost of porting xbla games from the x360 to the ps3.

I might be talking out of my butt but I think sony might charge people bandwidth costs too. I can't remember where I got that idea from so take it with a large grain of salt.

  4. Slightly surprised not to see an ODST thread.

I have to say I enjoyed it more than I did 2 and 3. I feels much more like Halo 1 and brings you back to the old grenade-gun-melee combo. Brutes have replaced the Elites as an enemy to be feared. The return finite health also brings back a permanent penalty for mis-judgment or poor execution.

All of that plus the night-time setting brings back some of the tension and forces you to slow down and assess a situation before piling in.

The Hub parts also serve as a break from the action, something which Valve makes a lot of noise about doing. All in all I really liked the campaign and fire-fight is great fun too.

  5. While Forza 2's cosmetic damage model is fairly linear, it's physical damage modelling is fantastic. I can't think of another racing game I've played that models surfaces, grip, cambers, weight shifts - all that stuff - as well or in such an immediate and tactile way as Forza 2 does. Including when things go horribly wrong and the resultant handling afterwards.

You say that but to me the damage boils down to lower top speed, crap gear change and the steering pulls. That seems to happen no matter what so of crash you get in

  6. The battery problem isn't a phone problem so much as an App problem.

The GPS, when enabled, isn't actually running unless an application is using it. The trick is that apps aren't stopped so much as minimized when you move away from them meaning that they can still be keeping the GPS active even if they're not using it in a sensible fashion.

Another thing you can do is hold a lock on the processor to stop the phone from going to sleep fully which is great if you want to wake the phone up, do some work and go back to sleep. However if you don't release the lock the cpu never goes to sleep so bye bye battery.

Both these things only afflict badly written apps*. The next update (1.6 aka donut) includes a program which shows you which apps are using all your battery.

LG and Motorola both has Android devices coming soon and I think there is a general rumour of an HTC refresh of the G1 too.

*The Android application lifecycle is odd so it's not surprising it's causing problems - certainly tripped me up

  7. I see. I was thinking about picking a copy up on Ebay. Looks like "demand" is down and you could get an xbox with the game and controller for less than $200 all in...

That sounds like a great deal to me, if it's a modded console you can copy your saves off to get around the whole killing you thing (this is what I did).
