  1. That car park scene was so awesome. Great tune as well (called DMZ by TV On The Radio). One of the few that I can remember clearly.

Although it made me laugh in that there was a similar pairing - geeky older geezer who was the cook, and young helper. hee hee.

  2. I got started on Breaking Bad this weekend and am near the end of series 2. Holy fuck it's good, and the cast is one of the best I've seen in anything for ages.

This show really knows how to ratchet up the tension! There's a bit in the last series where I was nearly hiding behind the sofa! I think I had to pause it to go and have a nice cup of tea to calm down :P

  3. Interesting this. There are parts of my personality that are pretty dark. I enjoy a funny joke, and I find nearly every subject funny, with a few exceptions. I used to find every subject funny when younger - nothing was beyond the pale. However as I've got older some things that I may have laughed at that just don't do it for me any more. The first of these was racist jokes, about when I was 12-14 or so. I found one or two funny, but still knew implicitly that I didn't approve of them because I didn't like the fact that they were all derogatory, and that's where the basis of the joke derived from. The second was rape jokes. I can't remember when I stopped finding them funny, maybe around 22-24. Those are pretty much the only two subjects that I can think of at the moment - perhaps gay jokes too. (But I cannot think of a single one that I've heard). Talking to the wife about this, she said that this is unusual for me to try and rationalise this, as I still tell paedophile jokes. Only funny ones, obv. :) I tried to argue my way out of this by saying that racist and rape jokes rely on putting people down over something that they have no choice about being, whereas other it's open season on other subjects. Am I a bad person? No, I don't think so. Does finding paedophile jokes make me a bad person? I don't think so, perhaps others do. Indeed, perhaps as I get older still and (crucially?) end up having children of my own, I will stop finding them funny too. Or maybe I won't. Time will tell.

  4. You could just send him back some blank DVD-Rs with tracking just to fuck with him and then he'd have to prove you sent him counterfeits of his counterfeits.

    I think I love you.

  5. A friend who got a job in an 'independant' coffee place in Leeds went on to making a bit of a career as a Barista. I believe he won some sort of national coffee thing. Anyroad - he loves it, knows his shit and appears to make a decent living out of it in London. It is possible.

  6. I've seen the film, which I really enjoyed, but wasn't aware there was a television show.

    This is England '86

    This is England '88

This is England '90 coming soon

'88 really rips your heart to pieces, then has you bursting out with laughter seconds later. Excellent stuff.

  7. Totally down with DaisyDaisy re: valentines day. Both of us feel the same, and it wasn't anything special. As for the feelings it's supposed to engender, ('do something nice for your partner'), they tend to happen spontaneousy anyway at random times. Fuck the commercialisation of it.

  8. So... The Vita seems ok. Very light, screen is very sharp. Only got to play tue capcom fighting game as a demo... Was good fun. The twin joysticks have a very very nice feel to them - far nicer than I thought they might.

Wifi only seemed to be equivalent of about 214 quid. Ish. I had to leave the dept. store after about half an hour as I was getting a headache from the lights, colours and sheer sensory overload. Fabulous shop though. Massive. Nearly got lost trying to find the exit.

  9. Good note on freakonomics.com about the piracy figures:

    http://www.freakonomics.com/2012/01/12/how-much-do-music-and-movie-piracy-really-hurt-the-u-s-economy/

These numbers seem truly dire: a $250 billion per year loss would be almost $800 for every man, woman, and child in America. And 750,000 jobs – that’s twice the number of those employed in the entire motion picture industry in 2010.

The good news is that the numbers are wrong — as this post by the Cato Institute’s Julian Sanchez explains.*In 2010, the Government Accountability Office released a report noting that these figures “cannot be substantiated or traced back to an underlying data source or methodology,” which is polite government-speak for “these figures were made up out of thin air.”*

  10. Re: automation - sure, no specific button, but macros and such like. I will chase it up with some BBC eds I can tap.

As for the other, I might give it another watch, and see if the o&t has such an impact. I did enjoy the film, just felt my mind wandering. Perhaps I wasn't in the mood.

  11. I'm not so sure TP. The beauty of computers is that tasks can be set up to easily repeatable, quickly. The nature of digitisation means that that can be somewhat automated and by extension, pre-digitisation was a lot more skilful. That isn't to denigrate video editors, as that is a skilfull job - but that colourisation aspect not so.

O&T = bad because it is so prevalent. You could argue it's a phase, but I agree with that blog dude: it's lazy.

As for drive - perhaps I could be persuaded that they were taking the piss with the OTT O&T stuff - it seemed really glaring.

  12. Has anyone seen 'Drive'? A friend described it to me as 'fucking mint' and 'the best film I [he] have seen all year [2011]'. So I watched it.

Good story, but it dragged a bit in between the action bits. I even paused it and wondered off to do some other stuff before coming back to finish it. So, meh in some parts, but allofasuddenitspeedsupandeverythinghappensallatonce. Those bits were good.

BUT! What I couldn't work out was whether the film-makers were taking the piss or not. We've all read the Teal and Orange thing - this film seems to take it to another level. When I spotted it I thought, "Are they trying to make a point? Really, really shoving it in your face? Or are they actually doing it to make it 'pop'"

Reason? They haven't just coloured it teal and orange. No. They've got things like TEAL wallpaper and ORANGE lighting in a scene. Once you notice it in one scene, it's in your face for the rest of the film. So it's not even digitised in. I kind of wanted to believe that it was tongue in cheek, as the film actually seemed quite intelligent in a way, but I came to the conclusion that no, it wasn't ironic O&T. It was just over-the-top-in-your-face-O&T. Fail.
