  1. Not sure if this has been pointed out already or not, but all of the new ideas in the script were Douglas Adam's. They only hired the Chicken Run guy to editorialize and to try and make it more coherent.

The cast is actually rather excellent (and in keeping with Adam's wishes), but it all depends how they work together... We shall see!

  2. Yup. I'm not sure what the big deal is but it's been a while since Microsoft have done anything inherently evil. Windows XP came out in 2002 and there has yet to be any real replacement on the immediate horizon (the next interrim one being a 64-bit based enviroment for those with 64-bit processors).

The next "proper" Windows (Longhorn?) is such an amazing overhaul (not the babysteps of 95 > 98 > 98SE > ME -- which all came out within the space of five years!) that people actually want it!

Their Service Pack 2 was utterly fantastic, ask any IT technician. Same goes for their AntiSpyware software (beats the pants off of anything else --including the aging AdAware-- and it's FREEEEE!).

Unless I'm missing something I'm actually beginning to like Microsoft!

  3. This is the most retarded thread ever. Every single game that you people have complained about you don't like because it isn't exactly the kind of game that you like.

Nonsense! Sometimes games just don't work for YOU on some weird personal level and the for the life of you you can't figure out why everyone keeps telling you how great it is.

The only retarded thing about this thread is the retards who think they need to tell people how good a game is... WE KNOW ALREADY!

  4. GoldenEye - what a piece of crap!!!

Half Life - Interactivity, my ass! Plot, my ass! Repetitive and boring shooter more like (some good bits, but mostly... YAWN!).

The Dig - Don't know if everyone liked this or not, but I thought it was B-o-r-i-n-g!

I'm sure there's plenty of other games that I'd love to have liked!

  5. I think Ron Gilbert earned perhaps too much notoriety from Monkey Island. You can't forget that Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman co-wrote it (and they later made Day of the Tentacle together). I think Ron Gilbert couldn't handle the pressures of being this "gaming genius" and that's why he's done pretty much nothing except games like "Putt Putt Goes to the Zoo" etc.

Tim Schafer and Dave Grossman both proved themselves several times after Monkey Island whereas Ron Gilbert seems to live on his fame. Actually I'm pretty sure I remember a quote from RG where he was complaining about the pressures he felt to please "the fans". Even Monkey Island 2 made several references of how "people always want more" etc etc. I don't think RG had THAT much of an input into MI2's dialogue, as the undertone of the whole game is disgruntlement. Afterwards he left LucasArts to do what? Make that childrens game he'd always wanted to make?

Give me Tim Schafer anyday... a tried and true game designer!

Toonstruck! That was a great game too! Shame they went under!

  6. Yeah! Fucking death, yeah!!! Rock and Roll!!!!

He will continue to influence the writings of Idle Thumbs

Out of interest, how many Idle Thumbs staffers have read one of his books?

I've only read Fear and Loathing, but it was fantastic!

  7. if anyone compares the excellent game psychonauts to harry potter again then they will personally get a fist in the face from me..

I take it that connection has been made before, then?

I think you're going to be punching an awful lot of people when the advertising for the game really kicks in!

  8. Awww, poor Tim! He actually seemed nervous after they said it was going out live! He started tripping over what he was saying and getting people's names wrong!

    Very cool feature though!

The only thing I knew about Psychonauts before I watched this was 1) It was called Psychonauts and 2) It was by Tim Schafer. Now of course, I like Tim Schafer and everything, but it wasn't really getting me excited... But now - wow! It looks really really cool!

It's a really cool idea for a game! Judging by the box I thought it might be a kiddies game, but I see it has this really cool side to it. Raz has run away from the circus to become a highly trained professional "Psychonaut".

It almost sounds like Harry Potter "on acid" (I hate that phrase, but it's true): Raz runs away from an unhappy life and joins a specialist school to become something much more exciting.

It actually looks, really really cool!!! But I have to wonder if I'd still be as excited by the idea if I didn't know it was a Tim Schafer game (and thus is bound to be superb).

Also note that he didn't mention Monkey Island as one of his games, even though he obviously had a large amount to do with it's content and style.

  9. Funny, those are the exact words that popped into my head when I saw his name. He can occasionally be funny, but he can't direct for shit.

Clerks and Chasing Amy are brilliant films. Sure, Kevin Smith has all the visual flair of a blind talentless orangutang, but I think he needs to be on set to direct the cast... Still, it's a shame that "Jay & Silent Bob: Strike Back" was the worst pile of poo-doo since, well, to quote Smith, "Greedo shot first". I have yet to see Jersey Girl as "J&SBSB" made me ashamed of being a fan.

  10. Crikey! That's very interesting! :( I hope it's not too bad!

That means 145 euros, so is Sony going the Microsoft Xbox-way™?

Sell as much PSP machines as possible and meanwhile losing piles of cash in the production costs?

Sony have historically made a loss on their consoles. It's just good business sense as they make money from the software too!

  11. The strong contrast in the text "Psychonauts" looks disgusting (lower version).

You mean it looks too pale? The contrast is about the same between the two?

Anyhow, I've looked at both boxes so long now I can't even decide which one looks better anymore!
