  1. This game nauseates me. I don't know if it's the FOV or the turning acceleration or what, but I basically want to hurl.

    I'm not usually that susceptible to simulation sickness, but sometimes a game gets it just right.

    It also make me feel weird.  I wouldn't go so far as to say that I want hurl, but my head and stomach definitely feel slightly off.

    Other than that, I'm really enjoying it.  The audio log at the top of the mountain was so good.

  2. Not out in the US till the 4th.  I want it to good, but I have low expectations.  This is the time of the year in which studios release their dregs.  They didn't even try to go for any awards with this one.

    Miller's Crossing and The Big Lebowski, unquestionably.

  3. Yea, it was said that Storm Troopers like Finn were kidnapped from their families and brainwashed into subservience.

    Speaking of which, this is one of the more irritating aspects of Finn's character.  Finn could have been a substantive character with a lot of conflicting emotions.  But he was just an incompetent goofball.  What part of the way Finn acts screams "brainwashed storm trooper"?  In the film itself, one of the New Order guys even claims some absurdly low defection rate.  If their brainwash techniques are so damn good, why does Finn appear to be utterly unaffected?

  4. Maybe someone has already mentioned this in the thread, but I was discussing the awful death star stuff with my friends after watching it again this evening, and we realized just how completely unnecessary all of it is.  You could make a near seamless cut of this film that takes out all of the death star stuff.  You don't need to blow up 5 planets that no one cares about.  You don't need an unwatchable assault "planning" scene.  You don't need a pointless space battle that has zero tension; that even the rebels know the outcome of going in so that they don't even bother to evacuate.  All of it can go.  (While you're in there, may as well axe the terrible smuggling space monster bit too.)

    You're still left with Han and Finn going to get Rey and the confrontation with Ren.  It would have been better if that stuff wasn't happening on a giant death star planet, but you can only do so much.

    Imagine how much better the film would have been if it had actually been shot this way.  If the confrontation with Han and Ren and Rey had been the culmination of the movie Empire Strikes Back style rather than being buried in a bunch of pointless clutter that no one cares about.

  5. If Disney is going to churn out Star Wars movies ad infinitum, then it would be great if they allowed some weird genre films to be made. You know, like a Star Wars neo-noir or a political thriller or whatever. You know, something that isn't a summer blockbuster where the fate of the universe hangs in the balance.

  6. Things that don't make sense:

    1. What's up with the star map?  I thought the whole point of their faster-than-light/hyperspace/whatever technology was that they more or less traveled directly from point A to point B?  Now there's some sort of navigation involved?

    2. The new death star mega blaster makes no sense whatsoever.  The original death star was mobile, and needed to be brought into range of its target.  Super-size-me death star is a fixed planet.  How the hell can they use it to shoot at anything that isn't in its immediate vicinity?  It should take thousands and thousands of years for the blast to hit whatever world the resistance is on, assuming it's even remotely close to it.

    [Edit: I friend informs me that the movie said that the blaster somehow shoots through hyperspace.  Apparently I zoned out for that detail.]

  7. Was I the only one who really disliked Finn's character?  I was sad that Oscar Isaac didn't have a larger role.  His character was quite entertaining, and had an excellent opening scene.

    Also, who came up with these garbage names?  They're impossible to remember.  Snark?  Slark?  Snork?  What?  *checks IMDB*  Ah, it's Snoke.  Of course.  And why are all the new names one syllable?

    For things I did like, Rey was most excellent, lightsaber battles were done correctly, and it was pretty.

    Things I'm looking forward to:

    * Luke

    * Han being out of the picture

    * Ren being potentially interesting

    * Fewer winks to the original trilogy

    * Fewer plot points lifted directly from A New Hope

    Things I'm concerned about:

    * Luke

    * Rey being tied into the Skywalker dynasty (please don't be Ren's brother...)

    * A shitty romance between Rey and Finn

    * Yet another death star... Why is the dark side so unimaginative?

  8. Full Throttle Remastered will feature all new artwork, with high resolution backgrounds and animation, with each frame being repainted by hand. We’ll be aiming to restore the sound and music to a higher quality, and we’ll also fill the game with special features like concept artwork, commentary tracks and as many other things as we can think of!

    Oh man, I can hardly wait!

    2017...

  9. I finished Technobabylon today.  It was another quality Wadjet production that I'd definitely recommend.  The puzzle design in particular was superbly executed and satisfying, apart from a few pixel hunts.

    I'm in an adventure mood.  I recall that Danielle mentioned an AGS style adventure (earlier this summer?) that looked worth checking out, but I can't remember the name of it now (not Dropsy).  I seem to recall there being three characters... and maybe they discussed the music and voice acting on the podcast?  Does anyone have a clue?

  10. The trick is to go to the inn and build a party of custom NPCs instead of those stupid suboptimal companions the game tries to foist off on you.

    This is hilarious to me because the strongest part of the game is its writing, and most (not all) of the companions are interesting.  Whereas, the game mechanics are alright, but definitely not something that I'd seek out in and of themselves.  I'm quite curious to see how they implement the "Story Time" mode that they just announced.  If it's done well, I think it could be a significant improvement to the game.
