I'm about to finish up playthrough #3 tonight. My first time through was on normal, second on easy to grab those extra items. Using those items in Madhouse almost feels like cheating, but then I remember just how much that mode hates me and I don't feel so bad.
Also: I feel like the beginning area with Jack and the hatch is the most stressful part of the game. Then I found out the easiest way to tackle it: Just go straight for the key. Don't even hesitate when Jack notices you. Just grab it, quick turn, and book it. Even on Madhouse, there's a good chance you can get to the hatch without getting caught.

You guys deserve all my money. But I can only give $9 of it.

I, for one, envision a future where every host is Sean Vanaman.

If you do go for the special item in the demo (which you should do, because it definitely helps early in the game) I would recommend following a guide. Be careful of which guide you follow, because some of them include a lot of unneeded steps. There are some great speed runs on YouTube that include only the necessary steps, I would recommend searching for them!

6 hours ago, noiseredux said:@ostrich: Wow, you really plowed through this one! Guess you weren't as big a baby as you thought haha. I need to get back into this. I got so busy after my initial time with it. I'm hoping to play some tonight.
I picked up some momentum after the first few hours of the game, and I was fortunate enough to have a couple of days off. The amount of playtime that Steam is reporting for this game is a gross amount of time for me to spend on any game in a normal week!

I just completed my first playthrough last night. I'm not sure how this forums handles spoilers, so I'm going to try my best not to include any in this post. Just be warned!
After the first two hours, I found some courage and making progress became a whole lot easier.
The exploration and puzzle aspects of the game are definitely a big callback to the first game. If you took the prespective from first-person to third (fixed camera angles, of course), I would argue that the game fits in with the first three games perfectly.
The length was perfect. The game is so intimidating that certain portions felt much longer than they actually were. Though the second section flew by, probably because my desire to see what happens next outgrew my reluctance to move forward. The ending is perfect, and wraps the story in a big old standalone package. I would be fine if, for Resident Evil 8, they include all new characters with a brand new setting and just ignore what happens in this game.
noiseredux, I enjoyed the VHS gimmick, but was surprised to find there weren't as many tapes as the pre-release coverage let on. However, it was a cool way to introduce new sections before I encountered them as Ethan. Changing perspectives was also a nice break from the intense main game. I would have loved to see a few more tapes from other visitors of the Baker residence. It would have been a cool way to establish the Baker family a bit more (though the game already does a great job of that). -
I have returned after completing the first hour of the game.
noiseredux, just like you, entering the shack was a bit too much for me. I ended up stopping there on my first night of playing, but was able to continue on in my next play session. It's a weird feeling, having a game where I'm both dreading and anticipating play sessions at the same time.
My horror game chops on PC include the likes of Alien: Isolation and, most recently, The Evil Within. With both games, I was able to play to completion by watching Let's Plays when I felt too much anxiety to play on my own. I would watch only until important story points, where I would jump back in armed with the knowledge of what would happen where. As the game goes on, I would rely less and less on this method. It's like entering a swimming pool on the shallow side with floaties and, once I'm accustomed to staying afloat, I'll swim out to the deep end with a life guard watching. I predict I'll have to do that with this game as well.

I just finished pre-loading. I've never pre-loaded before, so I keep clicking "play" to see when it will actually let me play the game.
I have a feeling I'm going to get 5 minutes in and completely regret my purchase. Not because it's going to be a bad game, but because I'm a baby who plays baby games. -
Hi all! I'm Ostrich.
I have been listening to Idle Thumbs for a while, but less so ever since I got married. Mrs. Ostrich is a fan of the show (Chris Remo in particular), but...you see...to me, Idle Thumbs is a thing that is best enjoyed privately. I hope to conjure images of me hiding in a closet, unbeknownst to my wife, listening to the sweet sounds of Chris Remo, Jake Rodkin, Sean Vanaman and Ethnic Breckon.
But seriously, I'm looking to add another awesome forum to my mix of daily internet browsings, and I've been putting this one off for far too long!
anyone else excited about Resident Evil 7?

Mild Madhouse spoilers, in terms of enemy variety:
In some instances, there are actually fewer enemies. The trick is that you will be surprised with more powerful enemies early on, and everything will be quiet in areas where you wouldn't expect. The mid-game is when you'll start seeing areas where there are more enemies (more bugs, more molded, more fat molded). If you don't have the circular saw, ammo management becomes impossible when it's boss time (which is probably what it's supposed to be).
