  1. I mean, you probably have read them, considering that their plots are beat-for-beat from The Lord of the Rings with only some of the serial numbers filed off. Even when I read them at age fourteen, it was still absolutely shocking to me how someone could write Tolkien, with inferior prose and changed names, and make money off of it. Then again, we have Fifty Shades of Grey today, so...

I've heard that the first book at least is like that but the rest aren't as bad. I also heard the TV series starts with a later book than the first one.

  2. The Shannara Chronicles just premiered. The first episode is officially online for free (in the U.S. I believe):

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XPrHybyCRzw

It's cliché and cheesy in a lot of ways and it's not exactly deep. But it's fun, and as a fan of the Fantasy genre I think it's great that it's airing. Slade Wilson is my favourite character so far.

(It's based on the book series by Terry Brooks, which I haven't read.)

  3. I watched the series finale of TNG last night. Great episode. Great series. Looking forward to watching the movies now.

Wife and I are also considering starting Deep Space 9, but I'm a little sad because I don't see the characters even coming close to how likeable and awesome the TNG cast was.

DS9 is awesome! And it has some great characters, including a couple people from the TNG crew. :)

Like most of the Star Trek series the first couple seasons are pretty rough in a lot of ways though. The status of Sisko's hair on his face and head roughly tracks the show's progress in that regard.

  4. I wonder if the clones are old guys and there are only a few left.

That's addressed in the second season of Star Wars Rebels actually (which is set in between the prequels and the original series).

The clones were adults during the Clone Wars, so I doubt there would be any left by the time of the events of The Force Awakens.

  5. That's awesome!

That's sounds really awesome in so many ways.  I'm also a bit surprised something like that would be so difficult.  Either way, kudos to you!

I can't speak for Lansbury's software in particular of course, but it tends to be the case that if poor assumptions are made in a low-level part of a software as it's developed, it will spread to every part and it'll be really hard to fix those assumptions later without tearing everything down.

  6. No.

I remember their previous crowdfunding campaign. "Double Fine is not a random fly-by-night indie dev and we are not going to silently pull the plug on Spacebase or any other in-development project. Doing so would be disastrous for our reputation" they said, one month before they announced they were pulling the plug on Spacebase.

I'm still angry, and my love of Psychonauts 1 will not magically repair DF's reputation.

Spacebase was not a kickstarter crowdfunding campaign.

  7. I wonder who's going to do Aku.

Greg Baldwin (who was Mako Iwamatsu's student) voiced Aku in the Samurai Jack video game. He also voiced Iroh in A:TLA season 3, after Mako passed away. It'll probably be him.

You can look at the last twelve months with everything that has gone on with Gamergate, that it’s made us all pay attention to this issue. When we talk about what I call D&I, Diversity & Inclusion, at EA, it’s never far from our minds when we make hiring decisions.

“We all need to step back sometimes and think about the environments we create for our people, the opportunities we create for people internally, and equally importantly how you bring new blood into the company,” Moore says. “It can’t all be white males. As a result, I think that hiring managers at EA over the last couple of years have had a sharper focus on diversity. I know that my teams around the world have. If there’s been any benefit to Gamergate, whatever Gamergate is, I think it just makes us think twice at times.”

  9. Excellent post and full of the hope that I think the Hugos need moving forward.

On that topic, here's a blog post from Ursula Vernon, one of the people who got pushed out of the list of nominees because of the Puppy slates (numbers were released after the awards went out which show where various votes went): http://ursulav.livejournal.com/1634673.html

George R. R. Martin hosted a Hugo losers party after the main awards, and gave out several awesome trophies (dubbed 'Alfies') to people including Ursula. He's written some more excellent blog posts on the Hugos, the post-event losers party, and the Alfies:

Part 2: 'The Hugo Losers Party' http://grrm.livejournal.com/439464.html

  10. No one here would ever doxx you and do heinous shit like that. I'm actually offended that you think people here would do something that would hurt your livelihood.

I could be interpreting things incorrectly, but I think megaspel was concerned because this is a public forum and people outside of the community can view the posts here. If that's the case then I think it's a fair thing to ask not to post personal info about him in public spaces, although I hope no one will actually come here looking for dirt or whatever on people, it'd be a shame if everyone here had to be more guarded about their lives because of crappy internet people...

  11. It has splitscreen co-op and versus. The splitscreen co-op works online as well.

I was really into the Carball mod for Unreal Tournament 2004 back in the day, so Rocket League was an instant-purchase as soon as I heard about it. It's the first game I've bought for full price in a long time, and I have no regrets. :D

  12. If the games you play are able to run at high framerates, it's very hard to go back to a 60 Hz display after using a 120+ Hz one for a little while (from personal experience looking at / using my friend's 144 Hz monitor.) Even just moving windows around on the desktop looks like a stuttery mess at 60 Hz compared to buttery smooth at 120/144 Hz, once your eyes adjust.

High pixel density is also nice, but I'd say it's more useful / noticeable for things other than gaming (e.g. reading a lot of text or programming), whereas in games antialiasing can somewhat mimic what a high pixel density display will do, and depending on the game a high refresh rate will make things feel comparatively amazing.

Of course, different games benefit differently from each. Higher refresh rates are the most noticeable in FPS games, I think.

  13. To be fair, feminism really should be focusing on whatever Joss Whedon thinks is important. That's why they call it "feminism."

For what it's worth (in case anyone hasn't read the full article):

As far as Whedon is concerned, however, anyone blaming feminists for driving him away from social media is not only wrong, but missing the point about the relationship between internet trolls and feminists on Twitter.

“For someone like Anita Sarkeesian to stay on Twitter and fight back the trolls is a huge statement,” he said. “It’s a statement of strength and empowerment and perseverance, and it’s to be lauded. For somebody like me to argue with a bunch of people who wanted Clint and Natasha to get together [in the second Avengers film], not so much. For someone like me even to argue about feminism — it’s not a huge win. Because ultimately I’m just a rich, straight, white guy. You don’t really change people’s minds through a tweet. You change it through your actions. The action of Anita being there and going through that and getting through that and women like her — that says a lot.”

  14. Is that the bit where Mako bravely sacrifices himself after being given nothing to do that season, except of course he's going to survive because this show doesn't have the balls to have a character actually sacrifice themselves? Or the bit where Korra decided she was all about mercy now that she'd had a bad day, like some white boy saying that he understands rape now because his email got hacked into? Or the bit where Korra and Asami held hands after the minimum possible setup of a romantic relationship?

I had a lot of problems with Korra.

Due to the number of characters and the length of each season, none of the characters got "enough" air-time, in my opinion.

Characters have sacrificed themselves many times in Korra.. and even in A:TLA as well. Jet sacrificed himself in A:TLA (it was the first death of a named character in the show, I think?), Tarrlok sacrificed himself at the end of season 1 of Korra (in a murder-suicide of two brothers, no less), Hiroshi Sato sacrificed himself at the end of Korra season 4, etc.

Season 4 of Korra spans multiple years. Korra went through some serious development during that time - I find it hard to think of her mercy as forced when it was something that other people have been trying to teach her for years. I don't think the portrayal of her actions is perfect, but I don't see it as a very big issue either.

If you re-watch Korra seasons 3 and 4 there is quite a bit of romantic build-up between Korra and Asami (although they still didn't get as much air-time together as I'd have wished, just like most other characters.) It's kind of easy to miss if you only expect heterosexual relationships to happen though. The end of season 4 is the *beginning* of their romantic relationship, and even though the network didn't allow an actual kiss, there are so many visual and musical callbacks to previous instances of kisses in that scene (even within the same episode!) that it does the job well enough, I think.

Not sure if you've read Bryan Konietzko's thoughts on the end scene: http://bryankonietzko.tumblr.com/post/105916338157/korrasami-is-canon-you-can-celebrate-it-embrace

  15. This sucks, a gamergate affiliate group have hijacked the Hugo awards.

This is only tangentially related to the thread topic, but George R. R. Martin (of A Song of Ice and Fire / Game of Thrones fame) is writing some very excellent blog posts on the subject. He's been part of the scene surrounding the Hugos for many decades, so he can speak from a great deal of experience:
