  1. Now I'm really looking at getting a Wii U or NX! The Wii Uhas built up a very respectable catalogue of exclusives, and I really like the look of the new Zelda... The trailer didn't get me but watching the demo really did! I think I'll wait to see how backwards compatible the NX is before getting one though.

  2. DOOM is like the FPS version of Bayonetta.

I'm really not a FPS guy, but holy shit that would have sold me otherwise!

The last one I tried was the Wolfenstein reboot, which was pretty cool, and had some nice call backs to the ancient version but even so I just got bored of the shooting.

  3. I decided to take my Eagle down to Maia to pick up some Meta Alloys to give to Felicity Farseer.  I thought about taking my Adder that was better outfitted to the job or upgrading my Diamondback Scout that was probably better suited...but the idea of taking the Eagle down there seemed like a lot of fun.  It was tense because I only had a small number of jumps before I needed to fuel scoop and a couple mistakes could leave me stranded without fuel or a fuel source.  I had to check the galaxy map every so often and make a detour to the nearest scoopable star at times...but I made the ~450 Light Year journey from Kremainn to Maia in my little Eagle (it has a yellow paint job and I've taken to calling it Big Bird's Bones...and if I could name a ship that would be its name).  I then ventured from Maia to Deciat (and Farseer Inc) which was over 470 LY from what I can tell.  Through the course of this adventure I'd stripped out the shield generator to make room for a cargo rack and my last hull reinforcement module to make room for a small fuel tank to give me a little extra margin for error.  I was interdicted a couple of times and ended up the victor of those encounters with some damage but nothing too bad.  I managed to make my way from Deciat back to Kremain (229.75 LT according to ed-td.com's route planner) in my trusty Eagle and ended up appreciating the ship that much more.

After the journey I'm kind of attached to my Eagle...I've had this particular one for a while without getting it blown up and replaced via insurance and now that I've had this adventure with it I'll be sad if I ever get it blown up.  I've taken down NPC Pythons and Anacondas in it (usually with help from the NPC Fed's in high risk mining areas in Kremainn) and just today I took down an FDL with it in Ngaliba's Comprimised Nav Beacon with the help of an NPC Cobra Mk3 who I believe was a fellow bounty hunter (there may have been a third ship involved...I wasn't playing with VR so I didn't quite have the situational awareness I normally would to be able to tell who was helping me for certain beyond the Cobra that I almost collided with several times).  I like my DBS, but I think the Eagle is my favorite ship right now.  If I get enough credits I'll almost certainly slap one of the expensive enhanced thrusters in it (right now I've got a little over a million credits and I've stopped upgrading the ships I never use so that I can keep getting credits until I have over 7-10 million and feel comfortable getting those thrusters).

Congrats! I had a hairy enough time in my 35 million credit Asp, so doing it in a eagle is very impressive!

  4. One ther big mission change I really like is that ranks no longer cut you off from missions; instead, they indicate higher likely difficulty and reward. For example I have recently been specialising in nabbing rebel transmissions and encrypted data for a particular faction at war, getting up to 1.7 million credits a pop, as well as a whole bunch of rare materials. They have tine limits of several days, so I don't have to worry about real life getting in he way. Also, my courier can easily outrun most of the threats that thrown at you.

Now I am heading off to alliance space to see if I can boost rep with one of the engineers focused on bounty hunting by handing in bounties. They don't just take any bounty, so I guess it's only for their faction. I'm taking my Python for a change, and greater mission flexibility; normally I would just change ship for a particular mission type (now possible mid mission as we can transfer cargo between ships), but I don't want to move them all from Cubeo.

  5. Well, Felicty Farseer will sort you out, but your Vulture is a bit hefty, I'm afraid! These thrusters come in 2A and 3A sizes only, and make the little ships a whole lot faster and maneuverable. The enhanced courier is my new favourite ship, and I am currently playing with two different versions to see what's best as performance is highly mass dependent; I have a 600 m/s runner and planet surveyer, and a 530 m/s combat leaning one.

Badfinger, missions now reward hanging around a particular set of systems as you gradually build up reputation with the minor factions; I think there are around 500,000 new persistent NPCs to interact with as you rank up. So yes, there's more to it, and a wider variety of missions are now appealing thanks to changes in the mechanics

  6. I'm glad you're enjoying it, I'm having an absolute ball! I have access to 4 engineers, and have had my first referral, mot someone who I don't remember from beta :).

Hands down my favourite addition is the enhanced drives for small ships, which I highly recommend to anyone. The engineer(s?) that sells them does so via outfitting, so you don't need to do meet their criteria for accessing the workshop.

  7. Holy hell I don't know who these McElroy people are but I spent nearly my whole weekend just watching Monster Factory.

The whole weekend? You have a stronger constitution than me! I couldn't breathe for laughing so hard for the fallout 4 one so I had to stop!

I've really fallen down a hole, and am enjoying the ride as I got into MBMBAM and Adventure Zone, decided to donate monthly to Maximum Fun, and branched out to Baby Geniuses and Judge John Hodgeman so far...

  8. I'm periodically checking the launcher for  signs of the update, but it takes ages.... the switch-over started at around 8 am this morning, coming up to 11 hours ago! I know it's absolutely HUGE so patience is a virtue :).

I was going to say that people who wander around taking missions as they go might miss out in the update, since mission availability is tied to faction reputation, and this is no-longer affected by rep with the super-powers. However I learned on today's livestream that many missions are locked to specifc faction reputation anyway, although this wasn't clear. Also, the number of missions available at once has increased, so people will be able to access more missions after all.

  9. Yep, "FIND THESE THINGS" missions are far more enjoyable now that they are more directed... there's even a nifty new effect for planetside searches. All in all, while there may not be many more new missions, many more missions are now fun to do. Also, I check out pretty every USS in beta (to see what type it is whilst in supercruise), and pretty much ignore USSS in the live game

  10. Woohoo! Mayhem has started in the 2.1 beta!

-- all engineers know all recipes

-- material requirements changed to fish

-- progress through engineer rep accelerated

-- temporary markets set up in engineer bases to sell fish

The idea is to have the most outlandish module combinations possible!

  11. I'm totally spoiled for the live game now! I had a brief session to fit out a courier with a prismatic shield while I can (this is my first and probably only week at Rank 3 after the 4 week probation period). I am totally in love with the 2.1 courier with the enhanced engine module (and swanky new seat :P). I've just picked up the last bits I need for the first clean engine tune up, and will likely make the trek back to the workshop tomorrow.

Just to be clear, most of the things I am so excited about are in the 1.6 beta for the base game: I have barely touched the Engineer content (though the enhanced thrusters for small ships might be restricted, since I only saw them for sale at one of the engineer bases and n the beta).

  12. Salvage missions, and perhaps all search missions, are much more palatable now :). I just tried one. Using the advanced discovery scanner, I was able to determine the astronomical body where the target was last seen; I could also have done this by scanning the nav beacon. I tried a number of signal sources when I wad close to that moon, but then when I found the right one, it was sure obvious (blue text and mission target). It's great that we can scan USS without dropping out of supercruise

  13. Toblix, even ignoring the new loot and crafting stuff, the 1.6 free update substantially improves just about every aspect of the game.

I've just been messing around with the souped up thrusters designed to make small ships desirable again. I stuck them on an eagle, and got over 510 m/s with ridiculously good manoeuvrability, an pd I've heard of people getting other ships over 600! I've also seen people complaining on the forum that they can't easily get everything in their Python anymore, which is fine by me! And someone from Frontier reckons that 800 has been done

Here is an example that shows the difference enhanced thrusters makes for a SIDEWINDER!

  14. "Added new planetary mission types / Added new scan mission types". I don't blame you for missing them!

TL,DW (for now): I am very impressed with pretty much everything! Even with relaxed introduction requirements, it will probably be ages (or Mayhem) before I can test any actual engineer recipes due to such a wide range of materials required that I have no idea how to get. However, the 1.6 improvements are excellent, and the framerate planet side is hugely improved. I just exceed min spec for Occulus rift, and mostly got 90 FPS when approaching my first engineer base.

Scanning USS now gives a very brief description and number of threats. I had a fight in one, and got a couple of different materials to scoop up: focusing crystals and phase somethings. I picked normal and refined focusing crystals, but left flawed crystals behind, so there are clearly quality tiers of mats that may affect the stat rolls

  15. I've just started downloading the beta :). The usual trick of copying files into the target directory to minimise load times didn't wo k, do I'm stuck waiting... Boo :P!

The previous limit for materials was 300 things. I think they said on the last live stream that they will add room for 100 data items, but look at balancing this in beta.

Looking through the ginormous change log, I did notice new missions

  16. Hey Doc, I think that the mission types will be similar for the most part, but there will be substantial changes to them

-- mission items / targets will appear in specific locations, revealed by scanning the system or nav beacon

-- rewards can include things other than credits (materials or commodities)

-- it will be much clearer what will be required

-- you won't have to drop out of super cruise to discuss alternative missions

-- I think that artificial rank barriers are going

-- surface missions could be a lot harder now surface battles with npc ships are in

I think they may have mentioned some new mission types, but can't remember the details.

Tonight's live stream was focused on the engineers themselves, with a few more videos added to the playlist

-- if you find a base and visit without an invitation, they will attack you after suitable warning!

-- you will start to get invitations from engineers by mail, after fulfilling certain criteria that vary according to backstory and interests of individual engineers

-- it sounds like every engineer base is unique and hand crafted

-- pretty much every type of activity will produce additional resources for crafting

-- resources required for upgrades will make sense... they give the example of scanning FSD wakes of other ships to improve your FSD

The planned beta release date is this Thursday (May 5). The beta will include a period of mayhem, where all upgrades will be easily available for testing, because they want to see how crazy we can get!

  17. The continuing release of cool details makes me very excited for the 2.1 beta, due next week. Yesterday, I saw the livestream focused on missions. It definitely looks like they are getting there! Frontier have made a playlist of the livestreams themselves (a bit long for people who aren't  REALLY into the game), as well as video clips shown in the streams:

Included videos include updates to maps and outfitting, new weapons, ice mining, and approaching an engineer's base.

The final scheduled livestream will be next tuesday, focusing on the engineers themselves. This week's newsletter gave plenty of information to start with: http://us2.campaign-archive2.com/?u=dcbf6b86b4b0c7d1c21b73b1e&id=13b2599b4f

IT looks like there are up to 5 tiers of weapon mods, and each has a number of effects that can have positive and negative effects drawn randomnly from a range of values. The effects that we've seen over the last few weeks look like they may be randomly generated special extras rather than things we buy specifically.

It's good to see that there's at leas one female engineer, Liz Ryder- she's apparently mad about explosives :).

The engineers' bases look very cool, blended carefully into the scenery unlike other bases.

  18. Hmm, it looks like Adr1ft is going to be compatible with Vive after all... how many petals are left? Apparently the gameplay isn't great, but I plan to get it anyway for the awesome space views :).

  19. I only got to tune in for a little bit (looking forward to the VoD) but the frame rate on some of the stuff Dan was looking at was pretty lousy looking. I wonder if it was only on the stream, the second video output, or if the headset was showing the same unevenness. That seems like an issue if it's on the headset.

They said that it felt fine when actually playing; this might be thanks to asynchronous time warp (which apparently smooths out juddering at less than optimal frame rates).

  20. GiantBomb is livestreaming Oculus games.

I liked that Oculus sent out a bunch of near min spec pcs to test it with, and GB are using them here. I am encouraged that the experience seems smooth even there, for the most part.

I think that the "tabletop" experience of e.g. Lucky's Tale and Fly to Kuma seems is cool, and am definitely interested in games like that. Also, I really liked Darknet, a 3D  puzzle game hacking game that seems very 90's cyberpunk.

The guys didn't like Radial-G too much, especially since it was the game that made them most nauseous: this might be alleviated by higher spec rigs. Radial-G looks like a spiritual successor to F-Zero, and I am very interested, especially since other people have reported a very smooth experience.

Being an Elite Dangerous nut, I will definitely get one of the two pc HMDs. However, I am worried about the restricted field of view on display. I hope this is due to some bug that can be fixed.

One of the many VR articles I read over the last couple of days involved one of the Adr1ft devs saying that it was too late to add Touch support for that game, but they were looking at it for their next game; this could be why it isn't being ported to Vive any more.
