  1. Haha, I still make stupid mistakes :)  I'm particularly prone to play later than I should, to the point where I'm tired enough that I end up doing stupid things and ruining a run.

I also still keep the item/card/trinket list open in a window, as there's still a handful of items that I just cannot remember exactly what they do or how they interact, even after all this time with the games.

tired isaac is most of my failures.  or getting aggravated with decisions ive made (on purpose or pill effects) that made the run agonizingly slow or low damage - and i just start playing sloppy.  What is great is sometimes the ship will be righted with a few good drops and what would have been a normal "reset" would then get taken to the house/chest

zeus - its my favorite game; ever.  im not good either, this thread & the daily challenge remind me how not great the bulk of my play-throughs are.  But still, splendid time and always want to restart to go again

what helped me turn the corner when i first started playing was watching twitch streamers, specifically Cobalt, he is really good but also will talk through some of his item prioritization decisions.  also get to see the content / game played at a high skill level, could gleam some of the tips and make your experience better.

  2. I'm playing the original with the wrath of the lamb stuff.

Also wrath added content/enemies/items and increased difficulty from zone 1, perhaps the learning curve would be different w/o the dlc

It's my absolute favorite game, glad giving a shot- but could see the adversion to this style of game

  3. So I got up to work this morning, and discovered that my trusty Dell Ultrasharp monitor that's been my workhorse for almost a decade was dead.  Initial troubleshooting leads me to believe that the internal power supply has failed.  I hope so, the thing still delivered a better picture than the lady's much newer 27" monitor.  I've ordered a used power supply board (all that's available), but it's going to take a few days to get here, so I went out and bought one of the ultrawide monitors to try, 29" with 2560x1080 resolution.  After an afternoon of working with it, I think I could really dig this and see it hard to go back to a 16:9 or 16:10 monitor.  The extra width is much more natural for splitting two windows side by side and have plenty of space for both.  My 16:10 Dell never really felt right when I would do that.  I wish I could have afforded the 34" version, but it was more than twice as expensive.  That seems like it would be about the perfect size for my desk and my working needs.

the extra wide (XW?) style seems to a new trend that ive seen come across as of late.  it feels the same to me if you had two same brand/model monitors - just losing the bezel gap?  i still use a single screen at work for space purposes...but will be upgrading soon.

I think i'd have to play with it in my work flow for a few days to feel what you mean about the window splitting

  4. Super greed felt as spongey as mega Satan. If I didn't have dead bird and yellow fly probably wouldn't have killed it. I love the coin mechanic of the fight (keys, bombs, etc) and less damage take more coins have to deposit to the greed machine (function? Can't wait to find out)

Greed mode with Azazel gives Lilith character, which was also yesterday's daily challenge

On the daily - I wonder if it opens all possible items, or just sets a seed and lets the item pool randomize. The scoring is neat, get points for progress and negative points for time, damage, and items

  5. Banner & side bar ad's arent a problem - seen them for 20yrs now, but the full screen take-over ones are obnoxious, especially on mobile. Additionally the cached creepy ones are no good - Like now every website i go to i see my recent amazon searches or Casper & Worby Parker spots everywhere

There was a recent discussion on the Back2Work podcast with Dan Benjamin and Merlin Mann about advertising in web & recent iOS update with some built in blocking.  They address the pod-cast ad's, page views, etc. - being someone who has no web content or anything to do with the behind the scenes it was pretty interesting - http://5by5.tv/b2w/239

  6. But I have a problem now. I started FTL a couple nights ago and I think I'm in love. I have a feeling these last three games will take longer for me to finish than the last 15 games combined.

FTL is great, until you get to the last level/boss.  Not trying to stir up anything, but another few days might see this on your recently quit list

*There is extensive discussion about the last boss in another thread, either Completed or FTL itself...

  7. Mario Kart 8: Just need to get 3 stars on some 150CC and mirror mode cups but other than that I've done just about everything and unlocked just about everything with my daughter. I got all the DLC too and love the extra courses. Not sure if I'll ever take this one online but this will be one of my go to games whenever there is an opportunity for some local co-op.

Not going 3 star on the 200cc?  8sec baby park laps are pretty sweet

  8. Hmm... then a Bluetooth dongle would also be forwarded? Which means I could use the Dual Shock 3 via Bluetooth as easily as I do now?

I've been trying to investigate more about ds3 usage, preliminary info points to wired only for the time being. If ds3's were wireless without heavy work and lag id be all in

  9. But in Japan the red O on the Playstation pad is historically the 'accept' button and X is cancel. The Xbox 'green for go, red for no' makes sense to me - although it's not 'natural' mapping, the significance of red/green has been thoroughly assimilated from childhood. Dreamcast button colours seem to have been chosen completely at random.

I find this whole subject fascinating. The pad shape and position of the right stick can change which button the right thumb falls on most naturally. I find playing Super Mario Bros on a DS harder because my hand is generally at the wrong angle to comfortably hold on B to run and jump when needed. It's easier on a NES pad where your thumb is pretty much perpendicular on the pad. Which must be why the newer games map jump to B/A and run to Y/X (by default). What's the original jump/run assignment of Mario World on the SNES?

I've just started working on an infographic that charts the evolution of the major pads since the NES. I'll post it whenever I finish.

my wife has always been leary of games due to the controller - she likes the wii-mote  due to the simplicity 1/2 with D-Pad (re: NES)

But recently has been trying to use the PS controller for netflix functionality.  The arbitrary X/O/Triangle/Square buttons didnt make any sense until i said it as X-> Execute, O-> Out and finally clicking.

I dont think we'll be playing Lovers in a Dangerous Space anytime soon, but at least the basic menu navigation is less intimidating

Regarding SMW - Y was run, B Jump, A was the spin jump, X may have been spin jump as well

*Edit - trip beat me to it

  10. I came so close to being the southmost thumb. Why did somebody have to live in Invercargill?

I'm going to be moving cities in the coming months though. I assume there's some way to update my blob on the map when that happens.

several folks have re-located and sent me private messages to update the spreadsheet, for obvious reasons it is a view only document

let me know and best of luck moving

  11. Hardware speculation is all well and good - i just hope they dont lose focus of the Wii-U and the 2014-15 gains they've been making.  Feels like from MK8 till now has been a hard push to boost hardware sales and pulled in a lot of late adopters with several really good titles in a row.  Great, now they have roped in a lot of new people, some good games on the horizon - and then just jump to the NX system?

If this thing came out anytime in the next calendar year i'd be pretty soured, and even more so if they take that Zelda they've been showing the grass demo of and just shelve it to the next generation.

On the wild speculation - they should zord with the Wii-U like the 32x did with Sega.  Perhaps have to stack an old wii, wii-u, and this new NX device to unlock the full potential

  12. BattleZone was a very weird premise -  wasnt it US vs USSR space race with the special metal and alien tech.  Thematically though the space travel and planet settings worked great with the necessary fog of 3d games of the time (RE: Venus levels)  We had two computers that were manageable and could play multiplayer with my brothers - extremely satisfying to jump out in pilot mode and snipe a huge tank, steal it, and smash the other person's base

Sacrifice is one of my all time favorites, i always flip-flop about getting it from GoG - but finding someone to play against would be a challenge to organize

On the BattleZone thought - did you play Hostile Waters: Antaeus Rising.  It was more of an action/squad game and less base building, but hits that frustrating control scheme exactly; land, water, and air!  It felt a lot like a tech-demo at the time, I think it came bundled with a lot of Voodoo 3DFX cards at the time.

  13. This controller talk is disappointing and off putting - at least for Gen1

Has anyone tried using any of the other supported controllers - Xbox360, Xbox1, etc? I've got a like-new 360 controller from a red-ringed box collecting dust - if it only needs that ~$10 windows wireless adapter to work i'd be very excited to get on the Link train

There is also report of PS3 controllers working (wired only) and PS4 being supported (wireless?) - if the Steam controller isn't super great i guess ps4 would be the next best (and cheapest) - anyone with first hand knowledge?

  14. Congrats so hard!!!!!! It's so insane, but so wonderful.

2 months in, and we're still loving it over here:

I just started going to work again. it's so fucking hard to say goodbye to that face in the morning.

ah thanks! i was actually thinking about you and your little one - wondering how it was going.  My wife is home with the lad for another few weeks, i had only a few days - but coming home is a nice treat

He is pretty much the best thing, its fairly incredible (at least in my case) my world flipped and immediately in love and protector.  i was fairly uneasy going into the process, worried about nurturing skills, etc. - but hes still alive and seems happy

  15. in other news Chicago Cubs won their first play off series in ~12yrs and are actually really pretty good this season.

Personally i cant stand cubs fans, the whole Wrigleyville neighborhood, and even the stadium will grate on me (i do the sign work there and causes major stress &  strain from March -> June).  However i do promote what is good for Chicago - and them finally getting a WS win would be great for Chicago.  Also - the incredible coincidence of Back to the Future predicting the 2015 cubs win would be amazing.  i can already see the conspiracy theorists talking about how the game is rigged, etc. And the number one reason i care if they win - finally will shut up about it all.  Curse of the goat, bartman, whatever else - bad management, hot/cold streaks, and poor prospects have been their downfall - not superstitions.

  16. New kicker made first ever attempt in nfl, on Monday night, away - from 47. Huzzah!

Everyone misses from time to time, but being a pro athlete with extensive experience is supposed to mitigate risk of lots of misses

Badfinger - I hope they find their way, in a league where kickers are generally underpaid - a lost one sure shows the importance of the position

  17. I'm sorry if my advice scared you, undermind9, but as long as you don't leave the cat alone with the kid, you're fine.

oh no, it is a well known threat in the home, we are vigilant and havent left him alone with any cat yet (or plan to till hes larger)

we put up a 4' gate to the kid's room that none of them have attempted to scale yet - so there is no overnight worry either. The white one is the only one who has gotten this close yet...the others see him as an Attention Sucker for the moment.

  18. Luna before kid arrived, taking advantage of his future little chair

today - been home for a few days and this is the clost she's gotten so far.  going to be a long road

  19. so this happened

    post-33948-0-31690200-1443846565_thumb.jpg

its pretty much the greatest.  ive got a lot of thoughts - but cant quite articulate it all just yet.  But we've been home since wednesday, he sleeps great and eats better.  My wife is well and getting back to full power

its really great, i never would have thought been into this, but im pumped on all fronts and look forward to the next challenge

  20. pittsburgh has lost two games because Scobee cant make field goals this season.  i generally feel for this guy, he is a veteran player who did great things in jacksonville - but has certainly lost something or just nerves - "needs to move on"

but now they are holding try outs for kickers - so moving on might not mean mentally

  21. because that's my fucking life on a plane and every time someone leans back on me, seriously, nothing NOTHING in life makes me more filled with hatred for a human being

have some fucking courtesy FUCK i'm mad thinking about it

sorry but for real it really makes me angry you have no idea how uncomfortable flying is for me

im 5'9" and cramped in coach - i have never reclined my seat out of courtesy to the potential tall behind me.

However, i surely make it a living hell for any 5' 3" small in front of me when they do a full recline before wheels are up and then proceed to curl up in the seat with plenty of space.  want to rest your seat back on my knees? let me show you how i practice a double bass drum

flying is the worst. it might be my primary contribution to not liking travel, Merus is right, starts a vacation off on a bad foot

  22. Afterbirth is on pre-order for Oct 30 release

In a clever bit of pre-order sale they knock off 39% the price for owning Rebirth - bringing it to $6.66

What is unfortunate, and probably a red-tape mess with NoA - but there is no cross buy with the Wii-U release, or even a discount - I am still extremely tempted to get on the wii-u for TV play...but i think Steam-Link is going to be the solution in the near future  :(

  23. RE: Mario Maker Worlds

sorry - only image could find quickly

    post-33948-0-89699800-1442462015_thumb.jpg

The purpose of the rows/arrows is to utilize a full "row" as connective levels so finishing left -> right to create a smb1 "World"

However, to Jake's point i don't know if you'd have to upload all four levels as a package, or link together.  It could be a later feature/unlock that they will unveil as they get a feel for total uploads and server loads.

Is there really a max of 10 uploads per user? or do you need to get more coins/medals on levels to increase your max upload count.
