  1. Badfinger, as an Eagles fan what is your opinion on the Kelly rebuild?  As a neutral observer I liked the McCoy trade and some of his early decisions but then things started to stack up against him.  Not sure I would trust the injury prone trio of Mathews, Bradford, and Murray every Sunday.  I've read that others Eagles coaches will revamp their teams significantly by year three but this seems like an extreme overhaul.  What are your thoughts?

  2. Growing up I must have been exposed to too much sensational news or seen some traumatizing movie.  Even though we lived in the suburbs I was convinced up until middle school that drive by shootings were a regular and common occurrence.  If I was in the driveway and a car was driving by I would shield myself behind our van in the hopes it would stop the bullets.  Kids are weird.

Also my mother has gone through three phases with computer games.  Mahjong, Snood, and Bejeweled, I hope she never discovers Facebook games.

  3. I enjoyed that Full Throttle talk and desperately want that Corley Motors shirt now.

I don't think this is touched on in the cast but Jake mentioned something similar and I've heard you can apparently use height maps of real world locations to create maps in Cities Skylines.  A quick search came up with this but I haven't bought the game yet so don't know how effective it is.  If I can make quick maps of San Francisco or Pittsburgh and deal with those geographic challenges that would be pretty great.

  4. This seemed like the first Danswers that had a wildly different tone.  Everyone trying to be as funny as possible and ultimately just giving out either bad advice or coming off as cringe inducing.  The whole "don't have a baby unless you have $100k" anecdote also sounds insane until you start trying to rationalize that she probably just meant people who don't have the means shouldn't have children.

Does the Q and A portion of the latest PAX panel have any moments that make it worthwhile?  I also have a tough time getting through those sections so I'll likely skip it (and my guess is the audio issues only made it worse) but figured I'd ask.

  5. Agree that Brad and Dan aren't a great combination.  I'm sure it isn't his fault solely but I do find myself blaming a lot of awkwardness and lack of enjoyment on Brad in quick looks or other features.  The pick pocket thing wound up being funny in an awkward, stand offish sort of way but ultimately it was the kind of crap I hated in the brief time I played Pathfinder with friends.

Those Alex and Vinny quick looks are fun but its disappointing that Vinny still isn't on some sort of podcast still.  He really improves almost anything he is a part of and I feel like we're missing out on comedy gold by not getting more content from him.

  6. I haven't finished the podcast either but enjoyed Are You Afraid of the Dark?  And wanted to chime in.  I vaguely recall the pinball episode, does it end with a pinball coming down the escalator or is that just a thing that happens earlier in the episode?  I just know the whole mall setting was interesting for someone who spent way too much time loitering in one throughout high school.

Also, there was an episode where I think a kid froze to death and they found his sweater in a log.  The monotone "I'm cold" quote is burned into my brain from that thing.  And the pool episode.

  7. I enjoy that Dan and Drew seem like they have a burgeoning friendship.  There are a few occasions when some of quick look combinations feel like two people "working" but between Metal Gear Scanlon and the abundance of other games played together it really works well with those two.  And it allows Drew to show his personality as opposed to something like that recent Demo Derby where Jeff was added in and Drew is mostly the third wheel.

People thinking Brad and Dan hate each other is also pretty funny.

  8. To chime in on the Ryan talk, I got married literally two and a half weeks before he passed away.  That only added to the shock since I was able to relate to the highs of just having a wedding and being on a honeymoon.  I found out the news at the in-laws and trying to even describe why it was so impactful was beyond my ability.  But for a group of guys I listen/watch nearly daily and get so much enjoyment out of it really does feel like losing an extremely close friend.

But yea, when Jeff answered the Danswers question about loss I wasn't sure whether to be happy or feel a little cold about how he dealt with loss.  I know between his Dad and Ryan alone he's had more than his share of emotional baggage in the last few years.  Hopefully the company doesn't have to deal with any more tragedy for a long, long time.

  9. I think Sean's question about why Polygon has to cover certain AAA games at all was valid but would have totally accepted if Justin just had said because it's a business.  They get the clicks and I think the scope of their operation requires things like constant coverage of Assassin's Creed or Destiny and an article on the latest Marvel movie update.

But this was a great and fun episode, Justin always made the Besties worth a listen.

  10. Primarily a Penn State and Pittsburgh sports fan.  I care most deeply about the PSU football team and Steelers but between the issues with the actual game of football, all the controversies both teams have been mired in for the last few years, and the NCAA and NFL being awful organizations its been tough.  I still get some modicum of enjoyment when I do watch but I find myself following more through articles and Twitter than relying on the swings of individual games.

Soccer is another major love of mine but I follow too many teams to be deeply invested in their ultimate fate.  Tottenham is annually good for raising hopes and then immediately dashing them, the Chicago Fire can't get out of its own way half the time, and both the Polish and US Men's National teams are good but a ways from being in the world's elite.  Ah well, still fun times.  Just kind of wish every sports league didn't seem like it was run by a bunch of corrupt white dudes who very thinly veil their hatred for the players and fans.

  11. Also what's wrong with the names of the games in the JackBox? JackBox makes me think of jack in the box, where when you use it something wacky pops out. Drawful conjures images of drawing, and fibbage is a game about lying. The fact that it's a portmanteau of fib and cribbage is probably incidental. I actually thought they were good names. Now I'm questioning myself, Jake!

While I disagree about JackBox (I think Jellyvision is a way better name and JackBox is connotative of a lot of things that aren't awesome party games) I agree with you on fibbage and drawful.  Didn't have any issue with either name and they are descriptive and memorable.  I welcome any explanation Jake has for his dislike though word spud and lie swatter both seem like not great games or names.

  12. Hi Everyone,

This is perhaps not the forum for this type of thing so please ignore if I'm off base, but I figure it would be foolish to not at least ask considering some of the global citizens and well-traveled folks here.  My wife and I are heading to Amsterdam and Brussels in April and were wondering if you all had suggestions for places or things to see in particular.

Other than the Anne Frank House and hopefully an AFC Ajax game our itinerary is relatively empty.  We've got 6 days in each so if you've been to cool places or know of any, I'd greatly appreciate any ideas.

  13. I'm going to repost what I wrote in the Idle Thumbs 189 topic since I'd like to respond to Brodie's message above which came directly after.

I thought the few times Sarah touched on racism were surprisingly quickly dismissed.  For how readily she questioned most everyone's stories it was odd to seemingly brush off that idea and also conclude that the police work was generally solid when most of what we heard seemed to indicate the opposite.

I agree with Danielle that its interesting to look at the criminal justice system and disheartening to see how awful it all is portrayed.  The only solace I can take is that apparently a train wreck of a case like this doesn't seem to be the norm.  My question to some of the folks who have serious issues with the existence of the program though is what changes would you have made to make it acceptable or should it just not have existed?

I think the real life crime angle and fact that there is an actual victim with a family aware of the podcast gives me serious qualms about how much I enjoyed listening.  Still, I'm interested in seeing where they go for next season and if they address some of the issues raised from this year.

    Brodie,

I think you raised a great point about how not only is it possibly very painful for the Lee family to have this all brought up even if they aren't following along (which I'd assume they aren't) but also some of the sweeping generalizations about the community are likely infuriating.  Playing slight devil's advocate though if say the DNA evidence shows that it was the serial killer or somehow exonerates Adnan wouldn't they prefer that to locking up an innocent man?  That may be presumptive seeing that its not a guarantee that the evidence will even be able to be tested or a match for any of the suspects but its probably an outcome many listeners are hoping for.

  14. Currently searching for a new job so I have a few things to add here.  Agree with having your latest employer be a reference is understandable but commonly strange.  My current employer doesn't know I'm searching and while I'd likely get a glowing referral I'd rather not deal with the consequences of not getting that new job and having my boss know I'm looking to get out.

For the most part my experience with applications has been largely poor fill out text fields and still attach your CV but I had to go through roughly 3 hours of personality/knowledge tests in one of my last applications.  There were literally grammar, vocabulary, and math portions to not be taken with a calculator.  It felt like I was taking the SAT's again.  I've taken personality quizzes before for applications but never anything that extensive and exhausting.  Got an interview with the CEO but didn't wind up with the job, part of me is alright with that considering how odd I feel the whole process was.
