  1. So I don't know if anyone cares at this point regarding some of the minutiae with the ending but there were a few bits that confused me.

I fully understand the appeal of making a second Big Boss but two minor annoyances. Why does the player avatar just suddenly have Boss' voice after 9 years? Is this just a hand wave and hypnotic suggestion thing?

Giant Bomb had a big spoilercast and had the suggestion that maybe since this was technically V and not Roman numeral 5 that the whole game was a bit of a ruse, to be followed by one following the real Boss. Between that and what was cut in mission 51 they could have seen at least another two games, one with real Boss and following Eli. I would love to see either of those but if all Konami does is turn the franchise into pachinko machine fodder I'll be sad but deal with it. The game was incredibly fun and the story did nothing if not give me a ton to think about.

  2. Possibly a stupid question but I'm hesitant to look too hard I fear of spoilers. Most of my side missions go grey with a check mark after completion. However, I have at least one prisoner extraction mission where the box was checked but it is still white font, does this mean there's additional prisoners or things to do on that?

  3. Beating a dead horse on Mission 16 but since it's the last one I did I'll chime in too.

I also took out the jeep soldiers and had a checkpoint there.  Planted C4 on the road to eliminate the first vehicle of the convoy, quickly sniped the driver of the transport and then the Skulls appeared.  Was able to sneak around to the transport and fulton it but that alerted the Skulls.  I only had 2 rockets I got off the jeep soldiers so I was able to down 3 of the 4 Skulls but by that time I had literally run out of rockets and all other ammo.  Was afraid to call for a copter or supply drop and have the Skull kill me while I was in menu so I literally just ran in one direction until I escaped the hot zone.  Was hoping Quiet would take the last guy out but it never happened.  Took about 10 or so minutes of mindless running and just generally sucked.  One of the few real frustrations I've had thus far with the game.

  4. Worth noting that there's a difference between STUN weapons and ZZZ weapons (as there is a difference between enemies who are in the STUN state, the ZZZ state and the --- state). Some kinds of STUN also last longer than others.

Welp I'm an idiot and after seeing this switched from the STUN SMG back to the ZZZ pistol.  I was able to down the bear finally.  Did everyone use the tranq sniper rifle to take down Quiet or is it reasonable to do with the tranq pistol?  I did extremely will in the battle with her but headshots from the STUN SMG only chipped away at her meter so I'm assuming it was because I was using the wrong weapon again.

I'll chalk it up to being my first Metal Gear, womp womp.

  5. Legendary Bear mission talk, not spoilery but just in case

Finally got D-Dog and after a few missions figured this would be the perfect situation for him.  He found the bear way before I did and I got the drop on the bear and unloaded a full clip of the stun SMG into him.  The whole mission seemed relatively easy but I literally unloaded the full 220 tranq darts into him and couldn't get him to go down.  He was really flagging toward the end so I assume you just have to give them time to wear him down.  Ah well, I tried the stun arm initially but it didn't work, maybe I need to hit him in the face and not the butt since I think someone else here got that to work in one go.

Really fun, but need to upgrade my Medical Team dramatically so I can get the tranq sniper rifle finally.

  6. Was a little overzealous on a side mission last night.  Did a great job of tagging soldiers but on my way to the prisoner I got spotted and gunned down relatively quickly.  Next attempt I was able to actually make it to the prisoner but his guards sounded the alarm so I had about two dozen soldiers bearing down on me.  Most of the time I would just restart from a checkpoint and run it again but I wanted to see how far I could get by going full on Rambo.  Things started well enough and I was able to clear out the troops outside of the door but that still left about 10-15 guys on alert or actively coming my way.  A notification that a sandstorm was coming felt like a minor miracle and gave me the cover to escape with the prisoner into the hills without force.  A really fun, unexpected resolution that really made me appreciate all the systems working together.

  7. Probably got about 4 hours in.  From the little I've read enemies will adapt to your playstyle so I've intentionally tried to vary it from mission to mission.  I won't get into specifics but on one side-op I got to experience just how extremely effective mortar can be.  Only real quibble is I wish the story cassette stuff was integrated better.  Still playing during radio dialogue or just having to hang out in the helicopter to listen to tapes is fine but I wish there was a better way.

Other than that this game has been extremely fun and I wish I was playing it right now.

  8. Thanks a bunch for the information pyeixe and Smart Jason, I'll probably run through each mission once just to experience them all and then repeat a few to try and extract some additional folks.  This is my first actual Metal Gear game after watching what seems to be all the major ones at Giant Bomb.  I'm really reluctant to do too much reading for fear of spoiling cool stuff or just missing out on the discovery of the game but what kind of strategies do you all employ in Ground Zeroes?  I was able to make it through most of the missions I've done so far with just one retry and generally non-lethally.

I will say for example on the Paz and Chico main mission and the one where getting a casette is a trap I tend to get to the objective stealthily and then just find a truck and gun my way out or drive as fast as possible away.  Is there a better method or is patience pretty much the only real key?  I try to tag everyone and tranq them in the head with the first opportunity but I've always been garbage at stealth games so I'm curious as to whether I should be throwing magazines as distractions or doing other stuff more often.

    Also that Intel mission...

Dumb fun and having Kojima felt like the kind of absurdity I've enjoyed in the series.  I had the thought that his glasses weren't period appropriate and had to briefly wonder what kind of monster I was for even thinking it.

  9. Finally pre-ordered last night and did a run through the first mission on Ground Zeroes.  Does anyone know which missions in Ground Zeroes lead to staff at Mother Base in the full game?  I don't know if its specific prisoners or if I should be trying to balloon people off-shore but I'd like to try and knock out a few of those missions if they carry over.

  10. Thank you Nick for echoing my feelings on EG winning the International completely.  I only pulled up the video after hearing they had won and the extent of my Dota 2 knowledge comes from the Free to Play documentary but wow that was depressing and awkward.  I can understand some level of catharsis for some of those guys but it just felt like they were lining up for awkward school pictures.  I don't think it will keep anyone from watching in the future but if the competitors aren't showing excitement after winning the biggest tournament for the game then why should I?

  11. The majority of Dan's food stuff I can somehow fathom but that pants thing was so absurd that I almost feel like he's lying.  Just from sheer osmosis I would think you would have figured out either the general knowledge or have a relative idea about your clothing size.  It also makes me curious as to how he ever obtained pants in the first place, did his parents just make them appear without him ever trying anything on?  Ugh, this is the first time I can recall being actually annoyed at something stupid he has said.

  12. Not a baseball fan but was at the Pirates game on Sunday to see them sweep the Dodgers.  The game wound up being televised nationally but besides the Buccos scoring 9 in the 7th the best part has to be the fact that game had more runs scored than the Steelers preseason game the same night.

  13. Has anyone had success asking for a signing bonus?  I don't know what the chances are I'd get the go ahead but it sounds like another of those doesn't hurt to ask things.

  14. Had a few flurries of putting in job applications with the largest one being in late June and early July.  By the middle of July I hadn't heard much of anything so I started to retool my resume.  But just last week I heard from half a dozen companies suddenly.  Most of these are pretty large companies and I realize it can take weeks and sometimes months for a response but it was genuinely odd considering that slightly older resume could have used some additional polish.

Finally had my first face to face interview with one of those companies today and while it went fine I also had some of my first red flags ever.  When I asked about career development and advancement I was told "the company is generally light on bodies" and "a career path isn't really a thing here."  The guy proceeded to begin to say that if he was hit by a car I would technically have a shot at his job but stopped himself and changed it to "hit the lottery" but later talked about work giving him ulcers.

Really strange and I don't know if it was this was because he doesn't interview many people, was being brutally honest, or just used to what seemed like a very relaxed work environment.  Very strange, anyone else ever experience anything similar ever?

Also had some strangeness in HR screening phone interviews last week but this post is long enough as is.
