  1. I find it very difficult to get into Western RPGs because I keep falling into decision paralysis. I've built my character! I've started the plot! Have I already made completing the game extremely unpleasant? Probably! >Quit

This is probably a personal problem - I've got this weird habit where if I have several different options for things to do in an RPG, and there's one that's clearly a quick way to get XP and money to tackle the rest, I'll instead treat them all as equally legitimate, pick one, and then try and do that, instead of doing any kind of reconnaissance or strategising. I do the same thing in MMORPGs - I won't run a dungeon because I'm not 100% guaranteed to be ready for it. I can barely handle job systems in Japanese RPGs because they're probably going to want me to tailor my party to the encounter which means I have to deliberately give up seeing what this thing does. Which is the opposite problem!

I love the idea of RPGs but apparently I can't handle them.

Thank you. Never had the right words to express this.

I really have a hard time with RPGs, specially the western ones. I found them to be too complex, so many fucking options... I never know which weapon is the better one (so many stats), if I should upgrade my armor or craft a new one, how should I craft stuff, where do I get the materials to get stuff... I have a constant feeling that I'm doing something wrong.

I miss Chrono Trigger, it was a simple RPG in that aspect. I remember it had an arrow to indicate that the equipment was better or worse than the one you're using. It's nice.

Also, lately I've also been very unwilling to play RTS games, despite being a fan when I was younger. I think it's because I don't have time for it anymore.

I think that time is my biggestt issue with playing games nowadays. I really won't play a game that in which I won't make progress if I only play 45 minutes of it.

  2. Year, it's certainly exclusive. There are even some posts from year ago by a Sony employee on Neogaf, which indicates that this game has been in development since then.

I hope this one is a little less demanding than Demon/Dark Souls. I always wanted to finish both games, but after a certain moment in the game you don't make much progress unless you play two or more hours in a row - or maybe I just suck at these games. Can't dedicate a lot of time in a day for games anymore.

  3. Yeah, that's a relevant concern, specially if you're not from an English speaking country. Actually, my problem is no related with dual audio, but with the inability to have the original audio with the translated subtitles.

Here the problem is when they don't offer an option in which you can have the audio in English and the subtitles in Portuguese, it's just full English or full Portuguese. Fortunately, I haven't had a lot of problems with that, I usually can understand the original subtitles quite well, but there's a lot of people that can't understand English very well but prefer the original voice acting. If I had the option, I would probably chose the translated subtitles, sometimes the translators do a very nice job localizing some slangs and expressions, I prefer this way.

As for the dual audio in Japanese games, I must say that I'd prefer the original Japanese voice acting, but localization was nice, so I can't really complain. But yeah, I'd choose the original audio anytime, always preferred that way.

  4. I'm addicted to this. Been playing on my iPad all weekend. The only card game I ever played was Magic, but with some fucked up rules cause any of my neighbors never intended to learn the actual rules, it was really awesome back then. I always thought that the iPad would be a great platform for games like these, glad that someone actually gave a serious effort on creating such a game.

  5. I'm curious, in what sense was FEA not what you expected?

I think it's my fault mostly. The game had some really solid mechanics, I loved some battles and etc., but I was wrong by thinking this would be similar to Persona 4 in terms of character development.

I think my expectations were too high regarding the story, I wasn't too involved by it, by any of the characters. And while I really enjoyed the gameplay, I felt a bit tired by the end because of the huge and long battles.

I don't know, I think I'm getting old and enjoying shorter games more than I thought I would.

  6. Finally finished Fire Emblem (the story only, not the paralogues). It was good, but not exactly what I was expecting. I think that after playing Persona 4: The Golden, maybe I'm expecting too much out of JRPGS when it comes to characters. Maybe I should replay it with the permadeath on - will be so painful - but don't feel like doing it right now.

I also bought Luigi's Mansion and I'm loving it! It's so refreshing, specially because I never played the first game. I'm really loving the more paced gameplay, using different mechanics to solve puzzles, it feels very unique.

  7. I hated inFamous 1, because it gives me headaches, terrible camera, tearing and framerate (yep, it's the only game to give me headaches because of these siily things).

I loved inFamous 2, though. Great game, I loved the story, it's so simple and juvenile but I never felt the need that it needed to be something else. It felt like a saturday morning cartoon, those ones you start watching because there's nothing else to do and end up enjoying it more than expected.

It seems that I'll probably love this third one, right? I still have to buy a PS4 though.

  8. Would you say this would be a good summer game when it's like $25-$30?

Hum... I think $20 would be a better price, but if you really want it, even hearing all these comments about it, I don't think you will be disappointed.

It's a okay game. It's alright. It's nothing noteworthy though, and it has a lot of flaws. It's enjoyable for some hours.

  9. I finished it. God, what an awful ending. It's like it's missing some scenes, hence why I don't know if they were being literal with waht they've shown or it's something that needs more interpretation. Either way, it's pretty bad.

There was a neat idea by the end of the game, some area in which they test all of the skills you learned in the game, without any battle. I thought that was a nice way to create "boss fight" in a stealth game, even though this is not exactly a boss fight. But then, they ruined this idea later in the game.

Well, I think I agree with 6/10 given by the press. It's an OK game, gets a bit tiring by the end, and the end is awful, so you feel like you waste a bit of your time, despite the nice visuals and entertaining first hours.

  10. There's a lot of people on the internet complaining of the downgraded visuals, and they surely seems worse than the reveal and the trailers from 2013. However, the creative director stated that the 2013 trailers reflect the final visuals of the game. I hope that's actually true, the game was a real looker, it would be disappointing if the downgrade is huge.

I really disliked the story, though. I mean, "he killed my wife and child", again? Except that this time there wasn't any child, but, it's still a tale of revenge. This is getting pretty tiring.

  11. So, I saw this on GAF, I thought it was really interesting. It's a comic from Davey Wreden, the creator of Stanley Parable, in which he describes how fame and recognition isn't necessarily a medicine to someone's own insecurities. It seems, as usually said the problem is within ourselves, and we shouldn't search for validation of ourselves in other people.

Also, I'd like to say that this don't seem like someone bitching about GOTYs, by the opposite, he's just expressing his feelings how his insecurity is reacting to the recognition he got with Stanley Parable. As he said:

The point of the comic was purely just to clarify that financial and critical success does not simply make your insecurities go away. If you were insecure about other peoples' opinions of you and addicted to praise in order to feel good about yourself, the dirty truth is that there is no amount of praise you can receive that will make that insecurity goes away. What fire dies when you feed it?

    (...)

But if I go posting on the internet about how awful I felt receiving all these Game of the Year awards, no one is going to take that seriously. "Oh, yeah, we get it, real rough life you've got there. Sounds pretty miserable to be loved for your art. Maybe go cry about it into a pile of money?" And then of course I'm back in the problem I was trying so hard to avoid in the first place, where I'm stressing out about peoples' opinions of me and forgetting simply to feel good about myself. I want to be able to like myself and my work, but it becomes SIGNIFICANTLY harder once people on the internet start asking you to feel ashamed of yourself. It's really really hard to ignore.

    (...)

So either I share this thing that is simply True, that is a representation of what I actually felt at this time, and risk being shamed for it, or I hide it away and continue to pretend that success means you never feel shitty about anything ever again in your life.

    Here is the comic:

I thought this was pretty enlightening to some of the insecurities that I have.

  12. The dialogue and the story in this game just came to a level that... I can't even... So terrible.

And it seems that the writer wanted David Caruso to take the role of Garret.

  13. I finished mission 1. Does anyone know what's up with this bank heist? It's on the map right away, and I'm working on it now, but I don't remember hearing about it at all. That said, my girlfriend was talking to me a bit during the Besso cutscene so it's possible I missed everything.

It's soooo much harder than mission 1. I'm not sure how I'm going to get it all in one go with all my modifiers on.

Bank heist... I honestly can't remember. Are you in the first mission after the tutorial, or in the chapter 2?

    If it's chapter 2:

If I remember what I had to do in that mission was steal a ring from a dead person, so it was in some kind of morgue or something.

Edit: Oh, it's a preorder bonus. I guess the AMD keys weren't preorder keys then.

  14. I've played about 5 hours of this game, and I actually like it. It's a good game, I think that maybe the press was a bit harsh on this one, specially if you consider the traditional gaming review scale.

I like that it is a Stealth game, you can't play it in any other way. If you get spotted by the guards and they get reinforcements, you're pretty much doomed. I think that makes sense, because you're some kind of super powerful master thief that can be extremely silent, in a way that no one notices you even if you're extremely close to them, but you're still just a thief, not a warrior or something. It's a way of balancing the game.

Also, as the game progressed I noticed some alternative paths to complete the missions. So, despite being condensed in close environments, I don't think that the game is too closed in the ways you can complete it.

One big problem is the execution: the engine could surely be better, it's not a good option for an open game. To avoid streaming, they put some wall and, to go through it, you have to do a QTE to pass them just to make time for the engine load the content. Sometimes, even this QTEs aren't enough, it needs a loading screen. And some of the walls are weird, just a bunch of barrels and wood, it doesn't even seem like you can go through it.

I think a better engine for the game could increase the freedom of how you interact with the environment. The lack of a dedicated jump button is really disappointing, and I think it only exists because the game can't create a map big enough for you to go anywhere. This would really improve the game.

I've only played the prologue so far, so take this with a grain of salt. I don't mind the random conversations, but the way the audio is mixed for them is really weird. It's like they really didn't want you to miss them. Two people talking in the street below you a block away sound like they are talking in your ear. It's very different than Dishonored or Arkham City, for example.

Yeah, that's true, the sound in this game is a bit off. Sometimes, for example, I can hear my own footsteps too loud but can't hear the ones from the guards.

  15. Well, I'm playing the game now. So far, it's enjoyable: it's ok, not great, not bad either. There's a lot of stuff to like and dislike.

First of all, I really like how it looks, the visuals are great, some really nice animations, and the atmosphere of the city is really great. The game runs perfectly on my PC, which has an intel i5 3330 and a R9 280X GPU, 60 fps locked at 1080p with max settings (only SSAA turned off, haven't even tried with it on). I'm surprised it runs so well, specially because some other games from Square Enix, like Tomb Raider, don't run that well and even don't look as good (Tomb Raider, for example). I guess that, with the new generation of consoles, they're optimizing some graphical stuff that were really taxing before, like ambient occlusion, lightning, etc.

So, the game is fine, its my first entry in the series so I'm really enjoying looting stuff when the game is totally about that. It's nice to just navigate through the dark alleys stealing stuff, looking at the nice visuals, finding some secret passages. It's somewhat a very relaxing game, I didn't expected it to be.

But, it's relaxing mostly because the AI is really dumb. It reminded me of the AI in Splinter Cell Conviction, they're so dumb at the normal difficulty that it breaks the immersion. In a way that's good, because I feel like I'm learning more how to play more traditional stealth games without a harsh punishment. It's like a stealth for babies, and I like it a bit, since I'm not really good at this kind of games. Still, I don't feel immersed as I was with dishonored for example, in which I pay attention to a lot of details before taking an action. This one is more streamlined.

The story is really cliche as of now, some tropes here and there, nothing to take any note. I dislike Garrett talking, it breaks the immersion and he doesn't say anything worthy. Fortunately, as I am not a native English speaker, it's easy to ignore his talk. I do like the guards talking though, there are some ridiculous and funny stuff.

The gameplay could be better, specially because of the contextual jump, it would be so much better if you could jump on anything at will. The level design also some weird things.

Still, I enjoy it, it's ok, a nice game, nothing great or outstanding.
