Double post for Gamescom announcement: the new DLC is all about Charlemagne. It'll extend the timeline back to 769, add a large number of events, allow for "custom" titles (whatever that means), and cost 20€.
Forum response is lukewarm. This seems to continue Paradox's recent trend of giving its customers not quite what they want but close enough that complaining seems entitled. For instance, the most demanded DLC is a Holy Roman Empire politics/improvement pack, so Charlemagne isn't too far off...
They could totally roll a better version of the HRE into this expansion as the HRE is an offshoot of his domains. They really just need to port some version of the Europa
Universalis tool over.

In this weeks video they discuss: A newly designed map. It looks like a spaceship, really good looking, very bright and clean. They also discussed a lot of general next step stuff. A short video this week.

This freaking game. I have played it for over 400 hours and still find new things.

They were joking around. Not everything has to be taken so seriously. If they actually spent any amount of time on the cookies thing I could see your point, maybe. I actually get annoyed with how often little statements on the podcast get attacked.

Grand Theft Auto 4's main character was an enigma to me. How is he so stupid? He always announces his presence to people he is going to kill, then they run away.
Also Far Cry 2's, how are you a professional mercenary who didn't think to take anti-malarial pills?
Enigmas man.

You have been chosen to play D&D online.

A forum user has started putting out the latest snapshot of playable UT2014. So if you want to play an unfinished FPS on maps that are mostly untextured using weapons from the last game, follow this link:
https://ut.rushbase.net/raxxy/Builds
Story about it here:
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/08/13/unreal-tournament-2014-playable-free-to-all/
I will play this so hard.

The role playing idea is a good one, sometimes I cheat to keep making my kings lustful, greedy, drunken lunatics, then try and hold everything together.
Or just making a really evil repressive dynasty.
The good vassal is also fun, do everything you can to support your king/emperor without ever plotting against them or trying to take power. (This doesn't always work, I have had other vassals force me to take power by overthrowing the king for me. I was just that nice.)
-
That is a very abnormal game, especially for a first time. can you give a basic timeline of how you build that empire? Are you saying you held six empire titles? because the ethnicity requirements should prevent that, unless you game the system on purpose.
I'm surprised you didn't face large scale independence revolts based on how much territory with different religions and cultures you have. Or from family members attempting to grab power.
There is no war-monger penalty in CKII because warmongering was very common.
I usually don't spend 100 hours on a single game, partially because I rarely play games to the end date. Usually I accomplish the goals I set for that game and go play a different scenario.
I find starting as a count on the borderlands between cultures and religions to be entertaining and difficult. or trying to build up Russia to survive the Mongol Invasion.
It is not possible to remove India, unless you can revert back to a patch before it was added.

Its not a flight sim, but the mechwarrior games (I always love mechwarrior 4 mercenaries) are great with a flight stick. I also enjoyed playing X-3 Reunion (There are two newer games in the series, but I have not played them. although you will need to keep your keyboard handy as well for some of the more complex, non-flight, elements of the game. Ace Combat: Assault Horizon is alright. I have also used the fight stick for Battlefield 1942 air combat, works pretty well.
Do you just have the stick or the throttle as well? I have been using my old Saitek pro for a while now, still love the thing.

So there's an Xcom Board Game coming soon:
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/08/06/xcom-the-board-game/
Not honestly sure if I'm excited about this or not. I've become increasingly disenchanted with several of the FFG games I own. While awesome, the setup and teardown times are so onerous that they don't get as much play as simpler stuff. Plus the amount of time spent making sure you're following all the rules in a new game tends to be on the high side. On the other hand, I have three local friends who are all Xcom junkies, and I'm sure this would be fantastic with them.
The phone App element concerns me. I feel like it will be an excuse to make the game even more complex. It also kind of defeats the point of board games being not computerized. Maybe it will be really cool and work really well, but I am wary.

A while ago I named all my soldiers after friends of mine and posted pictures of their deaths on Facebook. The best was when one of my soldiers was turned into a zombie and killed another one.

Since they mentioned UT I feel the need to plug my UT2014 thread https://www.idlethumbs.net/forums/topic/9531-unreal-tournament-the-new-one/ I have been posting summaries of the weekly updates the developers are doing. So pumped that they are backing away from UT3 design and going back to the better games!

Major changes to CTF are coming!
They are introducing a half-time mechanic. The game will split the game time you set in half. At that halftime mark all players, weapons, power ups reset. The teams will also switch sides so maps that are not symmetrical will be more balanced. I was wary at first, but they discuss how it adds a time crunch mechanic, which sounds good to me
They will also experiment with a reset every time someone scores. This could be terrible, but I understand how it could break up momentum in a way to make competitive play better.
Also there is no longer a flag cap limit, so they are introducing overtime and sudden death overtime. Which sounds like great high stress fun at the end of a match.
All of this is experimental so they might change it.
They are also trying to rework the translocator again. I honestly never really cared about the translocator anyway.
They also discuss dodge, spawn protection, rocket and impact hammer jumping, general game speed, clientside hit detection and bots,
Also, I was so happy to hear UT2014 get mentioned in the Idle Thumbs podcast this week!

They have talked about assault. Since this is in a large part a community driven development game, if people in the community want to make assault the devs will try and help out. Currently the core game will have DM, Team DM and CTF.

Good point about ship game play getting stale. This game looks like they are going back to the original formula completely, just running around a large city. At least the last two tried new things, wilderness free running and ship combat. This series could be a great place to experiment and spin stuff off of.

I will totally buy this game on a steam sale when it has dropped ~50% in price, just like I've been doing with most AAA games lately. If there was boat combat again I would probably buy at launch.

I finished INfamous Second Son. It's pretty ok, I even bothered to get the Platinum Trophy for no good reason other than I've never had a platinum trophy before. So I guess I enjoyed it enough. Not a lot to say on it other than it's a competent game and can be fun at times.
How does it compare with the previous two games?

New post from the Devs. They show off a new Deathmatch map, which lacks textures but looks very well designed and large, which I love. Discussion of character design direction and various in depth design decisions and questions. A prize for watching all the way to the end is a quick preview of the new version of CTF-Face!

Rapid fire artillery from Supreme Commander. I always loved the size of that game. As much as i like Planetary Annihilation, I wish the game would allow battles on a larger scale. I wish I could force the AI to spawn on different planets, or something.
The castle town I built on my friends server. Can't wait for the next patch to come out and we bring the server back. I want to build a Meso-American pyramid as a house

They will take a cut of mod, map, skin, etc sales from an official mood store.
I have seen concept art for the ripper on the forums and I don't think they have finalized the weapons list, so there is still hope!

Today some actual gameplay footage of the developers playing deathmatch was posted.
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2014/07/30/unreal-tournament-team-deathmatch/
I am so freaking excited, in previous videos they have acnowledged the errors of Unreal Tournament 3. There has been a lot of discussion of how to improve level and character design to create a better look. They apparently are playing with solutions to the glowing character models they had in UT3. The only thing I worry about is that the UI and weapon models I have seen so far are right out of 3, but I assume this is because the functional version is still rather barebones. I just hope they diverge more from that design.

If they mention bringing assualt back, I don't know how if will be able to wait. Perhaps cyrogenics.....

Just finished Hitman Absolution. What a disappointment, I am very glad I canceled my preorder and got it on sale later. There was one level that felt like something from Contracts or Blood Money. Sneaking through hallways is not what the series is about. Also the small levels were so silly. Ah well time to play something fun.

Mass Effect 2 was the worst for this because If you didn't exhaust all dialog trees properly with your team you wouldn't get all the the character side missions. Without those your team will die in the last mission. It was just very annoying to be required to do all of them, especially for a second playthrough. Skyrim did it better. You barely need to talk if you don't want to.
