  1. I made this a couple days before the theme was announced, but I can definitely recommend this recipe for Shrimp Fried Rice with ********* and toasted Coconut.

Mine didn't look as good as the picture on the site, naturally, but it was very tasty. Sweet, but with a kick.

EDIT: ...is ********* censored on this forum?

EDIT EDIT: Yo, it's like a pine plus an apple, you put it together into a spiky fruit, you can figure it out.

    Watch your mouth son!

    Serious eats just posted this:

    http://www.seriouseats.com/2016/08/how-to-make-omurice-japanese-omelette-fried-rice.html

Omurice is fantastic! I also plan on making a cake next week. I have been traveling the past four weekends so I haven't had time to cook much.

  2. So I did a sort of bad job making the mini-cake replica. Getting a butter cream just the right consistentcy is hard. Decorating cakes is hard.

I made it up with beautiful steak though (obiously this pic is before the cooking process)

I have decided that the new cake picture has the same cake as the first one, just after the birds ate most of it, got fat and tried to cover it up :)

In all seriousness frosting has always been my nemesis, I always reach a point where I don't want to smooth it anymore and start eating.

  3. PSA

I just read some Reddit posts about how the displays in these devices can easily get fried when sunlight goes through the lenses and burns the display. It hasn't happened to me, but I didn't know this was a big vulnerablity.

My headset lives around the corner from a window to prevent this. I remember seeing mention of keeping it out of the sun somewhere in a manual or tutorial

  4. Interesting:

"Doom VR takes this same tact but ends up feeling far more elegant thanks to a few subtle yet crucial tweaks. Rather than instantly shifting the camera from point A to point B, Doom makes you feel like you're dashing through the world with super speed: when you hold down the trigger of HTC Vive's left handheld controller, the world slows down, the audio drops into a deep rumble, and a bright blue aiming cursor appears. When you release the trigger, you see the world rush past as you dart to your selected destination. Being able to see how you got to where you're going while feeling like a time-bending badass in the process feels worlds better than the instantaneous, unceremonious perspective shift found in other VR games."

  5. Is Canadian flour a thing in Korea? As a Canadian, I don't really think much about our flour or its pan-global appeal...

I don't remember it being a thing, I think Mr. Pizza is just being its weird self.

  6. Ultima Online, at least in the initial couple of years, had you come back as a ghost and you had to travel to be resurrected.  Which could mean some incredibly long corpse runs if you had to run back to town, and then back to your body with no equipment on you.  I know eventually they added like insured equipment and stuff to help with the second part.

But, there were some interesting parts to being a ghost.  You could manifest by entering combat mode, and players could see you, but not understand you unless they had the right ability or skill.  Since your default state was invisible, if you were PK'd by an asshole, you could track them invisible as a ghost, and then alert your friends as to where they ended up so you could coordinate your vengeance from beyond the grave.  Being a ghost also let you get into and explore a few areas that would have been risky alive.

Everquests corpse run mechanic was the worst, I remember multiple times where I had to pay people to drag my body back to somewhere I could get back to.

  7. Prey had an interesting respawn mechanic, you went to the spirit world and shot some weird flying things to get some HP back before returning to the regular world.

I also remember some of the early Rainbow 6 games had an Xcom like death mechanic, where new squad members were recruitable if some died on a mission. However there was a very short name list and eventually you started getting numbered anonymous soldiers.

  8.  I want him to look at places other than the U.S. that use a FPTP system to see if it leads to two party systems (spoiler: it doesn't).

I would point out that all the counter examples are parliamentary systems, I always thought it was FPTP plus presidential system that lead to two parties.

  9. What this person see as the disadvantage of the FPTP system, others see as the advantage.  The FPTP system is supposed to promote strong coalitions.  Rather than a party becoming just "Gorillas" the parties are supposed to become owl and gorilla coalitions that find common ground and ideally legislative representation.  The effect of this is that it tends to promote the more moderate and common ground policies of either coalition.

The problem with internal party coalitions and more moderate candidates is that it stifles debate. If a more liberal senate candidate loses in a primary they are not going to be asked by the media to comment on policy frequently. I have serious issues with how parties and the media in the US treat any ideas outside the mainstream party lines like its insane policy only idiot follow. We don't have a major anti-war party in this country, there is no debate about our bloated ineffective national security apparatus in this country. I could go on, but I believe that if we had more parties that were allowed to represent a broader range of views then just the centrist parties we currently have, maybe we could have a more elevated discussion.

I hate that there is really only major debates on party direction every 4 years, once there is a presidential nominee I am supposed to just shut up and fall in line.

  10. By voting for a 3rd party candidate you're no longer voting for who will win, but instead sending some other message. But because it's just a box you tick, there's no way of interpreting that message! It may be "I want this person to be our President." It may be "I want the Green Party to be eligible for public funding." It may be "This candidate most closely aligns with my ideological beliefs about how government should work." The ballot counters have no way of knowing what your motivation was in voting for a 3rd party candidate.

This is the same with voting for a major party candidate, there is no way to know if you 100% support them, or hate their guts but are terrified of the alternative.

I wish we had a 'I object to the system' box.

  11. The Libertarian candidate, Gary Genericname or whoever, wants to get enough votes so that neither Clinton nor Trump gets 270 electoral votes, at which point the election gets tossed to the House of Representatives. I mean, that won't happen, but it's at least possible, and the way the math works I think it happens if he grabs a bunch of Clinton voters (plus a bunch of Trump voters, which is more plausible) in a couple key swing states.

Its pretty unlikely Ross Perot got almost 20% of the popular vote when he ran and zero electoral votes.

  12. If, in your best judgment, casting a vote for a third party is the best way to affect long-term change, then that is 100% fine (imo). I just want to see people actually considering the pragmatic results of their efforts rather than just voting to spite a candidate who is otherwise their best bet in an extremely worrying election.

Our politics are too focused on personalities, we need to get better about separating policies and people. Just because Bernie didn't win doesn't mean we can't keep pushing for the policies he supported. Similarly don't vote for or against someone just because you like or dislike them.

I suppose it's a problem related to our system of people owning their own legislative seat and directly elected executives.

  13. What does this mean?

I assume its either 12% of people that previously voted for Clinton or 12% of people voted for Bush and then democrats down ticket.

The Nader blame is so annoying, Gore won the popular vote, but lost the election because of the electoral college. He actually won in Florida but messed up how he requested the recount. Florida had these horribly designed ballots that ended up having tons of people accidentally vote for the wrong candidates. The supreme court ended up deciding the election by ending the recount even though it is unclear if they actually had the power to do so. Gore also didn't run a particularly inspiring campaign. But sure its 100% Nader's fault. (Not saying anyone here was blaming him, its just something that bugs me and I don't even really like Nader.)

  14. I've had this argument in Slack a few times, but I wanted to chime in here.

I live in a blue state where Trump came in 3rd during the primaries. If he wins the state it will because of a massive failure of Hillary's (Obama won Minnesota by 10% in 2008 and 7% in 2012). Because of this if I vote for her it will be effectively pointless, she will be well beyond the 50%+1. As a result I would much rather put my vote where it could actually have some, even tiny, effect and that is why I will vote green. I will be voting for democrats in down ticket elections, unless they have no opponent and I will for sure vote yes on our two citywide ballot initiatives. Professional insurance requirement for police and a $15 minimum wage because those two are where my vote will have the greatest impact.

  15. It also displays some of the issues with our democracy, the parties are already gatekeepers as to who is able to have a 'serious' run for the White House, if a few people at the top of the parties are messing with the rules and prematurely favoring one candidate over another then the primaries are pointless and the parties should just go back to anointing candidates without voter input.

  16. I want to break up with my long distance girl friend.

I have no idea how to do it. Thinking about it makes my stomach sink, but we're both clearly not happy with how things are going. She constantly complains about me, and I never want to just stay home and talk on the phone or something. I don't find it fun, and it doesn't feel like we connect when I do.

The problem is, she's having a really hard time right now. No money, parents refusing to help her too. It's going to be for 6 months. I really don't want to wait for 6 months, we'll both be unhappy, but I don't want to push her in to depression when she needs me.

argh, this is the worst, I should have just ended it when she moved away.

It seems like waiting in a bad situation doesn't help anyone. If she is already not happy with the relationship, I don't think would keeping it going longer and it potentially getting worse is a good option.

  17. So I guess I didn't get the Bonus pack after all. Chose the wrong way to buy my missions.

Do you know if this is intentional? might be worth contacting them about it.

The Sapienza bonus level seems to be the more fun one, its a lot more along the lines of Hitman's dark weird sense of humor. There are a lot of opportunities to sabotage the movie set and I want to try all of them :)

The Marrakesh bonus level is more a classic level. Still good, but not as unique.

The patch that came along with the level added a feature that I wanted for a while. Items in your inventory now let you know if they will be found via frisking.
