     Ketchup Macarons

    30-35 cookies

    For the cookies:

    The almond mixture:

    • 150g powdered almonds
    • 150g powdered sugar
    • 55g egg whites
    • 15g red food coloring

    For the meringue:

    150g granulated sugar

    40g water

    55g egg whites

    1. Sift together the powdered almonds with powdered sugar. Add the 55g egg whites and food coloring, but do not stir them together.

    2. In a saucepan fitted with a candy thermometer, cook the granulated sugar and water to 115C. In the bowl of an electric mixer, begin whipping the whites until they form soft peaks. Once the syrup is 118C, pour the syrup over the remaining 55g egg whites while they’re whipping.

    3. Continue to whip the whites until the temperature drops to 50C.

    4. Remove the bowl from the mixer and fold in the powdered almond mixture.

    5. Using a pastry bag with a plain tip, pipe 3.5cm rounds onto parchment-lined baking sheets. Once piped, let the rounds sit for 30 minutes to develop a crust.

    6. Heat the oven the 180C.

    7. Bake the macarons for 12 minutes, during which time rapidly open the door twice.

(I’m not certain why he does this step, or exactly when. The instructions said to Laissez cuire 12mn en ouvrant rapidement 2 fois la porte du four, which seemed to me to be right before they’re done.)

    8. Remove from oven and let cool. Once cool, remove from baking sheet. Then make the filling.

    For the filling:

    40g cornichons

    6g sheet gelatin

    350g Heinz ketchup

4-5 drops hot sauce (I used Sriracha)

    1. Rinse and pat the cornichons dry very with a paper towel. Dice cornichons into miniscule cubes (1mm).

    2. Soak the gelatin in cold water for 15 minutes.

    3. Remove the gelatin and melt it in a saucepan or microwave over lower heat, just until melted. Mix in one-quarter of the ketchup, the add rest. Stir in the cornichons and a few drops of hot sauce, to taste.

    4. Pipe filling between two halves of macarons and sandwich them together. Chill for an hour, until the filling is set.

Storage: Macarons should be stored in the refrigerator, where they can sit for up to two days. Remove from refrigerator two hours before serving.

  2. 5 successful ones gets you the Absolution suit, and 10 gets you the Blood Money suit. Nothing too special to be honest, and they can't really beat the casual summer wear that you sport in some of the levels.

Yeah I enjoy the challenge more than anything else. I would love if they would open the mission editing options so people could play around with making custom elusive targets, some great ideas might come out of it.

  3. I think that the first Crusader Kings is a fine game, but its design was a mess and it's very frustrating to learn the interface and then discover that there's some arbitrary stuff there that's not explained by bad messaging. I would not even think about playing CK1 without the Deus Vult DLC (the only DLC and basically a paid patch) and the "Deus Vult Improvement Pack" mod, which is a fan patch of the paid patch.

Once you've got all that, the game itself is reasonably straightforward. You generate prestige through events, through holding titles, and fighting wars, then spend that prestige to buy claims that you press in war. It's much less character-driven and there are plenty of systems that functionally do nothing (the peasant/burgher/cleric/noble meter in each county can be safely ignored, as can the friend/rival system) but I think the germ of what makes CK2 great is present in the prequel.

It's also worth noting, this most recent patch for CK2 has drastically improved the game's performance. It's running twenty or twenty-five percent faster for me, with less hitching during saves, and some people on the official forums are reporting up to forty percent increases in speed. You might want to boot it up again, just to check?

Is it because more people are dying of disease? Keeps the number of calculations down

  4. Maybe I'm just not old enough yet, or maybe it's the college I went to, but haven't colleges always swayed toward liberal? What happens to these old white guys that the suddenly forget that?

Most of the large ones anyway. Conservatives have never liked it. Also business schools and economics departments are usually more conservative.

  5. I was given the impression that the Obama administration negotiated chemical weapons use out of the conflict.

I'll also admit that I don't think the U.S. should have gone in in 2011. I'd consider myself part of the constituency that was disgusted by the possibility of more military involvement in the region at that time.

I've reached the point where I'm pretty much against us sending troops anywhere. We seem to just make things worse for the most part.

I didn't mean to imply that we should have gone in, just that those were chances to do so. Its possible if we had provided air support for the FSA in 2011 they could have won, but now its too much of a mess. We need to stop training and supplying rebels to fight a lost cause.

  6. Trailer music tropes fascinate me. I'm very happy you talked about it in such great detail. That darn Inception horn, amazing how much that has persevered. Thank you for the excellent example of the "piano tinkle," I wasn't certain what you meant.

I'm a little sad "Who let the dogs out" is no longer used in every comedy trailer.

    In a world where .....

  7. Is anyone else noticing the war-drums? Seems like the Obama administration is lining up public support for a more obvious prescence of U.S. troops in Syria. I suspect that it is being timed in such a way to make Clinton look hawkish enough for the election. I bet she's the one who will announce the war once she's elected.

I really hope not. We lost Syria in 2011 when we failed to support the Free Syrian Army and again when we failed to respond to chemical weapons use. At this point Assad has the only force capable of maybe bringing a form of terrible terrible peace to Syria.

  8. Wanted to make a dumb fun thing so here is a thread about pairing video (or board) games with specific drinks.

A few ideas to kick this off:

Twilight Struggle with either bourbon or Vodka depending on which faction you play.

Tiki drinks with Monkey Island games

    PBR with the classic Paperboy

Go nuts, or let this tread die, or whatever.

  9. Related to my earlier post about Korea. Paris Baguette (and other Korean bakeries) had a ton of these room temperature hot dog pastries that would have ketchup and mustard on them. Some would have been out for hours.

  10. I just set up a new Starbound server hosted through GameServers.com. I paid for three months in advance, and we'll see how much it's getting used at that point. I'm also inviting friends from another podcast site that I frequent, as well as the company I normally play games with, so hopefully it'll be hopping.

    Server IP:  66.55.149.64:21025

    User Name: user

    Password: IdleThumbs

I am unable to connect, not sure if the issue is on your side or mine. Has anyone else tried?

  11. 18citiesskylinesdisasters.jpg

This expansion may well get me back into this game:

"Paradox say the Natural Disasters expansion “features a catalog of catastrophes to challenge mayor-players everywhere, including planning with early warning systems and emergency routes, devastating and destructive disaster effects, and caring for the populace as they struggle to rebuild.” Expect infernos, falling comets, and other things that can happen naturally or be triggered whenever you want to cause trouble."

  12. Yeah the bonus missions were very underwhelming, not a whole lot to do in them.

I never actually beat Marrakesh, just didn't get into that level at all. The latest one is very good though, I've spent an hour or so on it, haven't beaten it yet. I'm still in my scoping out phase, lots of ways to get around, lots of disguises to use, lots of Intel to find. Pretty much all the things I thought were lacking in Marrakesh.

    Exterminator:

So as far as I can tell the gas only knocks people out, which is fine but they don't ever seem to return to normal. I had a plan to get upstairs evacuated, swap the mics then tell the hotel manager it's all OK but as far as I can tell you can't? If I wait long enough will they go back? Seems like it wants me to poison the lobby, but the problem with that is when I do this and then change to another disguise a lot of people are still suspicious of me. :/

If you just have them evacuate you can go up and fiddle around without interruptions. They will eventually go back up
