Loved the opening scene and follow up in the newest episode.  Glad they're really ramping up the strangeness while keeping a slight comedic edge, particularly with Oliver's scenes.

    Loved the latest episode

  2. I must say I am a bit tired of Aubrey Plaza in a broader sense, I think she is fine in Legion, but she literally plays one character in everything I've seen her in. Would be cool to see some range, maybe she needs a Truman Show/Eternal Sunshine

I only played through the intro last night and strolled through town for just a bit, listening to townfolk chatting, and it is indeed adorable and beautiful so far.

When you say listening do you mean the game is voiced? It looks interesting but I have a very low tolerance for having to read dialog in games

I watched it with my girlfriend and overall enjoyed season 1 but really fell off season 2. I think we stopped 20 minutes before the end of the finale and neither of us went back to it.

I agree that it's generally character driven, but I think season 2 suffers from being further injected with the mysticism that's 'not the point of the show'. There's a significant magic plotline in 2 that I'd rather not be there because it seems to just drive some shocking unexpected points and narrative twisting. I liked a lot of the characters, but the show focused too much on the American dad trying to hold himself and his family together. It was a case of the creators focusing on different characters than I would have, so I just got frustrated with the priests airtime.

I'd definitely recommend trying season 1 at least, I fully enjoyed that even with the above complaints.

I finished episode 9 of season 1 last night. So I will finish the season, might keep watching the show because I need something to watch while heading to the core of the Galaxy in Elite Dangerous.

I hate the dad so much. He has the classic inability to communicate or treat his daughter like an adult. So many scenes where she asks what is happening and he either lies or deflects because he is stupid and doesn't respect her. Its that kind of drama that I really have a hard time watching and enjoying.

  5. Has anyone else watched The Leftovers? I am on the fence about this show, it seems more concerned with the same kind of human drama that other shows do, but sometimes there is weird magical/mystical stuff I find interesting. Probably going to see how I feel after season 1 is over.

  6. I finished the show, its all on HBO GO JFYI.

I am seeing some stuff online about the show maybe getting a second season, I really hope that is not the case. The show really felt like a lot of great elements, great actors, wonderful sets and costumes, interesting premise etc that all added up to not very much. The show is very competent but nothing felt particularly original. At best the characters feel like tropes with maybe one interesting trait tacked on, I was really hoping for more. I knew he wouldn't get seduced because it was too early in the show for him to get busted doing something wrong,

Lenny never faces any consequences for his actions, he wants to ban gay priests, does, a gay man kills himself for not being allowed to become a priest. The media attacks the Catholic Church as a murderer and then nothing else happens. He threatens the Prime Minister of Italy who caves in, his persona and message drive people away from the Church causing revenue to go down resulting in nothing. Perhaps the show is supposed to be about the problems with having an absolute monarchy?

Episode 9 felt like a gigantic waste of time, in the opening shot we see an article about Kurtwell possibly having a secret son, by the end of the episode we know this is true. Also footage is finally captured of him breaking his vow of celibacy. I have no idea why an entire episode was devoted to this. Resolving the case by doing what the Church has been doing for a long time, sending the abuser to a new parish is also quite a bad ending IMO.

The god of this show is also horrifying. Only healing people when directly asked, only stopping bad people, by killing them, when asked and apparently only responding to one sad vindictive man.

@Wooben I'm a bit busy but I'll make that a to-do. Expect one between now and Tuesday.

    @Cordeos Thanks for helping auth!

Everyone, the server is looking awesome. Keep up the crafting. :D

No problem, I bring my laptop to work so I can add people while there :)

@Wooben I don't have access to the fancy mapping tool, i flew around a bit and took some screenshots. Hope this sates your thirst until Evilskillit can map it.

  8. I think I'm done with Archer, I like the show, but it seems obvious from the season 8 trailer that they are still out of ideas. I didn't really like the last 3 seasons but kept watching them out of inertia I guess.

Unrelated: I am becoming more and more fascinated with how the books and show of The Expanse are lining up. Seems like they will start book 2 sometime midseason? I am happy they are giving the story enough time.

Hmm, OK, it seems like a lot of space sims seem to take turns for the worse once they start to try and include actual human avatars. Hopefully this will be a slow and considered roll out.

Is there any real reason to play in open mode? I thought that it was required to do the community goals, but after getting blown up (1.5 million rebuy cost) for the 88 tons of robotics I was carrying to the most recent goal, I found out that wasn't the case and I played solo the rest of the night.

If you dont want PVP then no. There is a small group of us that have played together a little, i cant remember who manages our instance

  10. I keep editing this post as I listen to the pod:

I was only able to kick my World of Warcraft habit because I went to study abroad in South Africa. I probably would have tried to keep playing if I wasn't going to a country with hilariously bad internet.

This happened a year after I was there:

    SA pigeon 'faster than broadband'

Software exists to do things like get a PS3 controller to work as an Xbox controller on PC, I wonder if you could use it to force invert the X axis.

I used to frequently lose hours of progress in X-3 Reunion. That game came out before quick saves on fast travel were really a thing. Eventually I got a mod that would remind me every hour to save.

Some forms of haunting seem a lot like just having annoying upstairs neighbors.

Grand Strategy games are a great answer to the no internet problem. Crusader Kings 2 Europa Universalis 4, Hearts of Iron 4, Stellaris are all very small installs for modern games (CK2 is 1.8 gigs) and can consume hours/days of your time. In my case: CK2 - 941 hours, HOI4 - 343 hours, Stellaris - 69 hours.

I just watched tonight's pre 2.3 beta livestream, and was very impressed. I'm sure there will be a glut of information to follow, but here are the briefest of highlights

-- An incredibly detailed avatar creator, which starts from a single head shape, and uses a mountain of sliders (or presets) to make changes. There are undo and redo functions, and you can randomise little bits (e.g. just the eyes or just the nose) if you want to make tweaks without  dropping the general appearance

-- A vastly improved camera system, with free camera movement inside the cockpit and outside the ship, controlling zoom, blur, focus etc.

-- Can control ship, fire guns etc. in camera mode

-- Dolphin is revealed (and really pretty)

-- Megaships are revealed, not playable, but huge, possibly dockable, multifunctional.

How long till a monster factory in Elite?

I think I've asked this before (probably on Slack) and still don't understand it. What is "the dirtbag left"? My understanding of the word dirtbag is something like "the 20-something guy who cruises around the high school looking to pick up girls."

I think its essentially socialist shock jocks. There is very little about it outside that one article on Chapo.

Well, Unreal II certainly looks nice. I was not impressed at first, as I moved through some standard spacebase stuff and a rather ugly exterior with no art design to cover up any weak spots in the textures. However, later planets look great, from a night-time scene with loads of bioluminescence and lumbering lower species to a snow planet with huge ringed planets hanging in the sky and Syd Mead buildings looming in the distance. They certainly know how to present an epic sense of scale. On the other end of the scale, your hub ship has a great lived-in feel; it reminded me of Firefly as I wandered around the small ship, opening hatches to access the vertical design, listening to crew grumbling about missing parts, and finding full ashtrays and half-eaten doughnuts. There's a nice Trek feel to the universe as well, with diplomatic relations between different species. Your pilot, a blue blob in a little mech suit, learning English from a collection on 20th century sitcoms, is especially lovable. It's a shame that the stock meathead-marine banter is generally pretty bad and the female member of your crew dresses like a cheap hooker.

The combat starts off pretty frustrating, as your movement is very slow, but you're pitted against acrobatic enemies, and a load of your weaponry either has warm-up time or splash damage. I had to put it down to easy to get through the first level. I've picked up a few more weapons now, though, particularly the shotgun. The enemies aren't particularly inspired either - reptile guys or spiders, so far. It's adequate, though. Hopefully it'll pick up.

    Some other notes:

the loading times are very long, far longer than Jedi Outcast. I can sit there for up to a minute waiting to reload a quicksave...

It has mantling! It hasn't put it to good use like DOOM 2016 so far, though. It's just an occasional means to climb a slightly bigger box to get some ammo.

The final level of Unreal II is one of my favorite end stages of all time
