Friends at the Table demonstrates what a group of close friends with a lot of experience gaming and an openness to new and different systems can do together. I largely listen to FatT the way I watch The Joy of Painting; it's a demonstration of people doing something they do very well. The thing about a well run RPG is that it's basically a shared lucid dream. Creating a world and allowing your friends to feel like they're inhabiting it is something I've only experienced a couple times, as a player and as a DM, and they are the most deeply satisfying gaming experiences of my life. However, this also means that listening to a real play of a well run RPG is about as interesting as hearing about someone else's dream they had. Which is why I completely get it when people bounce of FatT.

Hm, I'm not sure if their choice of system would really change the end product, Critical Role seems to make due in the D&D framework and makes a (generally) engaging product. It sounds like Clint wants to do something with super heroes next which sounds interesting. I think TAZ at the beginning for me felt like the total inverse of of FaaT, but I think in the last few arcs has been trying to mold itself into something resembling FaaT which only works if everyone at the table buys into this world and self-serious lore.

Trying to take feedback in stride instead of defensively maintaining that their way is the only way it could possibly work is probably a good first step, but I don't have a podcast, so I can't say for sure.

I happen to agree with the feedback given, but I often feel like criticizing role playing feels too much like saying "Your Fun is Wrong". If Griffin is having a good time, and his players are having a good time I don't really see a problem. It might not be for us, but as long as the people involved with it directly are having fun I can't really fault them.

  2. I dono as long as I am entertained I am happy, putting any RPG storyline under a microscope seems like a road to madness.  I do not envy someone trying to handle DMing their first game, while trying to rein in his players, and trying to entertain their giant following.

honestly, i find friends at the table boring and impenetrable.

I can definitely see that, I've bounced off it a few times myself!

I appreciate a true play podcast is a hell of a thing, but the actor and roleplayer in me still rankles when Griffin gets so defensive about people (rightfully imo) calling out his sometimes heavyhanded method of steering the plot.

The lunar interludes when he does a lot of the driving doesn't bother me at all. Exposition and character management are things you gotta do. They all do it to some degree. Like "we do that!" is a silly catchphrase but that's not the way I'd do things.

I think they've touched on that before and it's because of how they want the show to fit in the (relatively) short format and still be fairly punchy.

It should be interesting to see if they keep going down the rail-road-y path or open things up when they start a new campaign with a new DM.

I think I share your sentiment @James , I bounce off a lot of the lore heavy aspects. I understand people LOVE that part of the show though, I have met several people who have fallen in love with TAZ outside of the McElroy bubble which is odd.

    The next iteration could

improve several things. Although the screen size was the right decision for portability, Switch 2.0 could reduce the bezel and expand the screen out a few mm. You shouldn't be able to slide the controllers on upside down by accident (I haven't done that yet, but I'm pretty careful/anal). The power socket should be on the top so you can charge it in tabletop without needing another lump of plastic from Hori. And the power button should be an embedded slide switch that can't be pressed accidentally inside a case.

Totally agree on all of these things, I'd love a way to actually turn off the joycons as well; they have a habbit of being activated via button pressed while in a case which is annoying.

I've had a lot of fun with this console in my commute, I'm sure I look like an idiot but pulling out the Switch on the train and blasting through a Shrine in Zelda, or getting in a run or two of Binding of Isaac has been great.

Speaking of Isaac - I think it's a pretty sweet port, and I actually love the four face buttons for shooting and using the left stick for movement. I bounced off the game when I bought it on steam years ago, but I've had a few really good runs on the Switch and I think I'm starting to 'get' it.

Also Neo Turf Masters is totally worth the $8, i've had a really awesome time playing against my wife. I wish they zoomed in the course minimap when getting closer to the hole as it is a little hard to see if I'm actually aiming at it at that resolution. I think it's a super charming package, absolutely love the music in that game. If you have ever had the hankering for a solid, basic golf game - grab it!

This goes on the floor today, it sounds unpopular but I'm pretty jaded at this point. I worry for the 24 million Americans who are going to be in serious trouble (not to mention the rest of us who are absolutely going to be paying for it).

Just watched the new Dave Chapelle special and, man is it rough.

It starts off well and then struggles entirely.

There is a 13-15 minute bit where he fumbles transgender rights and he keeps hinting at his own ignorance and toying with it before just making transgender people the punchline. He then, almost, ends it  on a rape joke that could have been really interesting and ended up just feeling like a Cosby apology. His anecdotes on meeting OJ Simpson were good as it gives an insight into the shifting sands of fame and infamy.

I truly cannot recommend it to anyone.

We have pretty similar thoughts on this - I think the whole trans punchline was fucking gross.I don't think I'm going to watch any of the other specials, I had a handful of chuckles but man this first special left a pretty bad taste in my mouth.

I think a lot of the issue is that most of his LGBTQ material is lazy and just plays on stereotypes (not in any sort of clever way) and obviously highlight some personal bigotry.

Clarify this for me: did you actually buy three separate protectors, throwing each one away as soon as the application of said protector had failed? Or can you try again with the same one? Because holy shit, that is terrifying. Those things ain't cheap!

Binding of Isaac grosses me out a little, but the gameplay is very interesting. It's mainly the poop that disturbs me.

Oh and eRonin, I'm likely to try our the Splatoon Testfire Event. I downloaded the game already, so now it's just waiting until next week. I'll probably suck amazingly, I only ever played three rounds of it.

The one I bought on Amazon was actually a 2 pack for ~$10 shipped, I royally screwed up the first two because I am a dummy.

Also I agree with the consensus that Binding of Isaac is gross, I have a few friends who love it though so thought this would be a neat thing to play on my daily commute,

Also, heck yes - looking forward to playing Splatoon for the first time (I didn't have a Wii-U).

I think the animations are an easy (and funny) target, but what really bothers me is how utterly uninterested I am in any of the dialogue that's happened in any of the videos I've seen.

I think this is the most daming critque a new Mass Effect could probably have thrown against it.

After playing a bit, and seeing some of the single player i think I'm probably going to wait for a sale as well. Maybe i'll pick up my Mass Effect 2 run I was doing prior to Andomeda's release.

  9. Man, I've had nothing but terrible luck in the MP.

1st match - We lose the host instantly, game crashes

2nd match - I load into the match but no one else does so I get creamed

3rd match - I load in, the mission hasn't started yet, all my team mates arent moving. Host drops, load back in, same thing is happening. Host drops again and the it crashes.

Of course I used consumables on each of those, so I've kind of just lost everything. Not a huge deal, but this kind of stinks.

    EDIT:

I rebooted and played a few matches with Vulpes which was fun. I don't know if my 2500k is up to the job of hosting matches which is a bummer.

I'm of pretty similar mind as you, and after playing a bit more I'm more optimistic about the game.

In regards to the faces, I had seen some chatter online suggest that if you create a custom Ryder the animation is a little bit better. I don't know if it is just me getting used to the poor animation, but it did seem a little bit less abrasive with my custom lady Ryder. Some of the stuff is just god awful still, it feels weird that we are still watching cut-scenes where your characters eyelids are clipping through there eyes, etc.

I'm not thrilled about a new race of bad guys, but I am kind of excited to go out and meet some new species and put some hours exploring a new galaxy.

  11. So I jumped into one multiplayer game last night after doing a short tutorial and the game crashed. did not realize it was running in the background so it totally sat there in the background for 3 hours running so I'm down to ~6.5 hours.

Oh man, you nailed my thoughts on Lady Ryder - I was a total fem shep kind of guy but I am not sure if I can spend my Mass Effect expeience looking at the dumb expression she is constantly making.

Mine too. I'll put it on and take some pictures to show it off. I'm excited, although I'm not "put the screen protector on in a steamy bathroom so as to not get dust on the screen" excited.

I also think that I may want to get this case, which is pretty expensive, but I have already taken my switch to multiple houses to play with people, and this seems like a pretty ideal solution for travel.

    Man, my installation broke bad.

Nothing super major, but just could not get either one bubble free - pretty annoying.

During my teens and early twenties I sort of got used to people around me being drug addicts. Living in Brighton where everyone seems to suffer from Peter Pan syndrome, that comes hand in hand with all sorts of consumption.

My first friend to die of an overdose happened when I was 18 and the number got really bad up until I was about 26 (one guy took a ton of acid and then played a 'trick' by grabbing a live train line). As people grew up this just kind of stopped and drugs just seemed to get boring or exhausting for most.

Except, it seems that some of my friends just started covering it up, not celebrating it like they had and resorting to doing it in secret. It has basically hit one friend in particular pretty hard and they don't seem to have ever developed mechanisms or even come close to recognising that they have a real problem. They will make token gestures towards 'yeah, I have a problem' but immediately go out and binge, with the 'revelation' satisfying anyone that confronts them about it long enough for them to just resort back to their own habits.

I am trying to get through to them as it is now fucking up their life, job and relationship. They just don't seem to care and use anything they can as an excuse to go back to drugs. The very fact that the drugs are fucking up their lives, is an excuse in itself to continue to do more drugs.

It is kind of scary to me, I am in my late thirties now and we (my friends and I) would be past this phase of our lives.

I need to do a proper sit down for sure but after that I am seriously considering contacting their parents.

As a child of someone with a lifelong crippling addiction problem it's a very hard thing to love someone in that state, sorry you have to go through that. While generally do think the adage of "not until they're ready" is a good rule of thumb -if you think it might lead to some actually crippling life changes maybe try to loop in family.

It's hard, and it never feels like there is a "right" answer.

When I was trying to find the location of that picture that Impa sends you to find to recall your first memory, I didn't read what the painter said very clearly. He was all "Yeah! It's on the border of the snowfield" and then I stopped paying attention. Ended up wandering around the snowfield for a while, slowly running low on heat saving items and wondering when I would find that gate and finish this super early tutorial quest. Instead I found a fucking dragon's nest at the peak of a frozen mountain. I was out of items that saved heat and slowly freezing to death, face to face with a giant dragon in a puzzle/fight (he doesn't really fight back) that has you gliding from peak to peak peppering him with arrows. I was also down to my last 5 arrows. The crazy part is, I beat the fucker and opened the connected shrine. Even crazier than that, the dragon I fought didn't look like yours. I don't think I fought the same dragon from your picture. Multiple dragons?

    This game is great.

I stumbled upon this the other night - it was great.
