What we do over at TiGSource is have a thread with a link to a Google Hangoutin the original post, and whenever someone pops in they post in the thread
-
Yes! This would be fun. We could transition directly to an Idle Jam if enough people are interested

just discovered this site
you are doing god's work

Networking in gamemaker is actually pretty difficult for realtime online play, but the netcode used in Nidhogg is actually pretty ingenious for the limitations. I read somewhere that messhof used techniques similar to those used in GGPO for that "rollback" effect that looks lagless, but judging from experiences in this thread it could definitely use some work.

Spoilers in response to Bjorn's spoilers
There's an even more explicit suicide attempt from Shay that's possible to miss. When you're outside of the ship in the space suit, you can cut your air hose with the knife without attaching the air canister. Shay get's rescued by the arms and when he comes to he says something like "Ah well, it was worth a shot". He might even say something as he's suffocating initially, I can't remember. Anyway, that's some darkness right there.
I'm certainly curious what's going on. It's pretty clear his "discovering" Marek and the events that follow are planned, which means whoever designed the whole system deliberately drives the kids in these ships to the breaking point so they'll be easy to manipulate. Pretty messed up.
This game is so RAD!
I'm not sure this has been mentioned in this thread (probably has) but the grandmother in Vella's story says that the feast happens every 14 years, which is about Shay's age, so it does seem like everything including Marek's discovery seems to occur either cyclically or in other "ships". If there's only one ship, then the former sort of suggests this really twisted Moon-like thing where boys grow up performing these tasks until they become aware or find out about the sacrifices and get replaced or cloned.
It could mean that Shay's revolt is an engineered behavior, like you mentioned, to make him unquestionably seek adventure after years of pampering, and kind of undermines his agency as a character by a whole lot.
I love this thing. I've not played many adventure games in the past but this is really something!
EDIT:
-insert Shay's Rebellion dumb implications here-

the discussion of A Link Between World's item renting system made me think of the Dark Souls.
DaS also has an intended path but allows you to poke pretty deeply into later content, typically putting several cash or meat barriers in front of you long before you encounter a locked door. It's also quite punitive when your sequence breaking goes wrong.
I'm certainly not the first to make the Zelda / Dark Souls connection but this makes me wonder if someone has at Nintendo.
There's really only one cash barrier but that can be circumvented by being a boss at the game
I feel like DS opens later stuff to you if you can grab it, while LBW lets you poke at later stuff if you grind for it. Like in DS it's actually pretty simple to get a great scythe deep in the catacombs at level 1 within 20 minutes or less, you just need to be insanely perceptive.

shoulda geocached the paintings and chicken scrawled the coordinates on the back of TC's amazing letter
-
Well, since they already know (or at least strongly suspect) that more stuff is coming, we could petition them to open everything on a Twitch stream or something.
seconded!

I like live action reactions, that would be cool
-
Ah ok that's interesting. Is that a special case or a rule?
So we should change the official name to Der Überweinhandler
-
Oh uh, I don't know German at all.
Would it be like...Der Überweinhändler?
-
Thanks for the kind words!
the only thing I can think of the sneak a Congrats Nick in there is UV paint or microscopic imperfections in the cloth of his uniform that form clear but jumbled messages
-
Actually, my guess was when Sean found out Chris had played Amnesia: The Dark Descent by himself. But yours sounds more familiar.
Oh man you nailed it! Thanks
-
Hahahaha and like they're looking at the viewer while fighting so it looks like those medieval paintings where everyone's facing forward and posing but doing something impossible strenuous.
Is a PSD ok?

Awesome subbes! That's...an insane amount of consideration. I guess I'm not really surprised that calligraphy is so nuanced but that's granular to a degree I didn't expect!
Kinda unhappy with the medals, but this is the latest iteration of Nick:
-
Could anyone think of some war decorations nick would wear?
The nick is almost done:
-
It's "Die Überweinhandler". I'll PM you the other info when my account stuff is sorted out
Thanks so much for your work so far!

Blambo, did you get back to Steve about your real name for crediting on the Wiki page? I'd hate for that brilliant image to get denied placement on Video Games' wiki page.
Yup, I had to put it up on flickr and put a Creative Commons license on it. It's his wiki photo now.
Lol I have so many photos of nick breckon on my hard drive now

A creepy reminder that people listen to the podcast?

OK!
I dunno if we should make this thread into a "look at what I'm working on" thread, but here's stuff
I'm fiddling with an engine for a game with hotline miami combat mechanics in gamemaker. I've added rolling and knives that stick to walls, and some rudimentary AI that circles you and tries to stab you. I'm not sure what I'm gonna make of it but it's fun to muck around in
Sorry for huge gifs
