Haven’t posted in this thread for a while, but I have to say guys, I think Inis is a super awesome evolution of the Cyclades/Kemet kind of area control game. It has improved on the simplicity of the rules and dramatically shortened the game time compared to Cyclades. It can take you many games to realize how many differenent ways there are to victory, and then it can still surprise you. This last game I thought I had a chance to win on the first round, but instead lost on the second, this is how dramatically quick it can be, if players want to go really competitive.

It has card drafting instead of Cyclades’ auctions and it works really well without much downtime compared to possible analysis/paralysis of Cyclades. And the way all the possible actions come from cards (drafted and otherwise gained) is brilliant combined with the area control mechanics.

Inis is my favourite game of last year, and probably of the last several years. So good. And absolutely drop-dead gorgeous.

  2. Finished this yesterday! Total masterpiece. Everything worked together perfectly. There are parts of Transistor that still cut a bit deeper for me (the ability customization and music, basically) but overall, I think this is Supergiant's best game by a good margin. Certainly their fullest and most engrossing. I loved the setting and characters, loved the Rites gameplay and was incredibly impressed by how responsive to player choice it is. I kinda want to jump right back in and play it again.

  3. Two years ago, during the first Wizard Jam, I had an idea for a Game & Watch-style game based on Idle thumbs 86: Always Support the Danger Layer. I never got around to making it, but finally, this year, my brother (who's a reader but not a forum member) and I are going for it! We've done very little so far, but here's the first official screenshot:

The idea is gonna be that there's a building collapsing and your little character has to move around, hammering on the pillars to stop them from breaking. I'll keep this thread updating as we get more done!

  4. I have read the book and seen the movie three times (read the book first) and I'd actually argue that the book does make it easier to appreciate the movie, but not because it makes the plot clearer. In fact, the book presents the plot in just as opaque a method as the movie (although, interestingly, the two reveal their secrets in almost an opposite order). But having read the book first, the disjointedness and opacity of the movie were much more tolerable for me. I knew that they weren't due to my failing to understand something or the director failing to communicate it. Rather, that was the deliberate aesthetic of the story.

I also think it helps a lot for the big spoiler. I'll just pop that whole part out:

    Spoiler

I've often heard people say (as Gormongous alluded to earlier) that the casting of Colin Firth ruins the reveal at the end of the movie, because obviously the biggest name actor is going to be the bad guy. But that's the entire point. In the book, Bill Haydon (Firth's character) is the obvious number one suspect for the whole thing. He occupies a much bigger space in the story than anybody else. Even when suspicion swerves elsewhere, you're always thinking in the back of your head "okay, but still, it's gotta be Haydon, right?" And that's exactly what Smiley's thinking and exactly why Smiley doesn't suspect him. He's too obvious a choice - it would have to be somebody smaller, somebody less directly connected to Smiley. And that's why the twist works and why Firth's casting works. When it's revealed that Haydon's the spy, it's supposed to be deflating. You didn't want it to be him, because it was too obvious and that's what made him such a good spy.

Uhm. Hi. I'm going to die because people in the wilds found the Once-Cat, liked it, and played it! Thank you so much everyone!!!!! I hope you had fun!  Did you folks play any other sessions?

I'm super happy right now. I wasn't sure if anyone would actually play it!  :):):)

Unfortunately due to scheduling issues, we only did the two sessions (one mission), but it was a good time.

Meanwhile, I missed GOTY from Waypoint this year. According to a recent Waypoint Radio episode he really didn't like the GOTY process, but I feel like Waypoint's year-end material swung super hard in the other direction to the point where I couldn't figure out why I was supposed to want to read it. None of the deep critical dives, just cute shit about what character has the best car, or super convoluted justifications to shallowly talk about a genre within the context of a yearbook. What?

I didn't get the sense that Austin hated the GB GOTY process, just that the Waypoint team wanted to do something different. I agree that it's not really my cup of tea though.

Wouldn't they be in a stronger position to voice dissent now that the election is over? They're out of "whatever it takes to beat the Democrats" mode. Or am I missing something?

Anyway, another dreadful morning. Good job, world.

Half the country just showed that they agree with Trump. Why would the GOP try to stonewall him now?

I appreciate that they right aligned all the pictures.

I am wildly excited for this website and also think the name is terrible and bland. I am hopeful that Junior Mints will be involved with their podcasts on at least an occasional basis.

Listen to their latest podcast where they read off the list of rejected names and be thankful it's not Bazinga.zone.

  9. This game is coming out soon! Has anybody else been following it? I've been watching a bunch of let's plays of the preview build and it seems really, really good. I love what they've done with the unstacked cities and the split tech tree.
