I recommend maybe listening to the JoJo Bizarre Explainer podcast along with watching show. They do a great job making jokes and critiquing it from a queer perspective. That said, Phantom Blood sucks, Battle Tendency owns, Stardust Crusaders is in bad need of a skip list and Diamond is Unbreakable is peak JoJo.
  2. I Had a Random Thought (About Video Games)

Cuphead gets so much easier if you: 1. remap the shoot button to a trigger instead of a face button 2. use the homing shot 100% of the time and just worry about positioning It's also pretty cool that you can map functions to button releases as well as presses. Maybe i'll try mapping Dash to trigger release 🤔

Martin Shkrelli fucked with Wu Tang Clan and now he's in jail.
  4. West of Loathing

I laugh out loud every time I play it. It's wonderful. Also, pro tip: any time anyone starts saying specific numbers, write them down!

  6. Supergiant's Pyre: Wizard (NBA) Jam

has anyone played this with mouse and keyboard? I found Transistor interminable with controller but really liked it when I played it like dota. From quick looks, the pace of the game seems well suited to M+K since it seems to treat your units like an RTS.

just a quick response for Patrick, when people say "fuck softboys" I think they basically mean this variety.

My interest in TaZ and FatT are largely informed by my own DM-ing. My major beef with TaZ is that Griffin's style reminds me of my own (largely seat of the pants, with a lot of plot points and scenes I want to see and difficulty accommodating things going unexpectedly or creating opportunities for the players to take the initiative in a way that feels natural, if you've played in any of my games, this isn't news to you ) while Austin Walker is the DM I want to be. Friends at the Table demonstrates what a group of close friends with a lot of experience gaming and an openness to new and different systems can do together. I largely listen to FatT the way I watch The Joy of Painting; it's a demonstration of people doing something they do very well. The thing about a well run RPG is that it's basically a shared lucid dream. Creating a world and allowing your friends to feel like they're inhabiting it is something I've only experienced a couple times, as a player and as a DM, and they are the most deeply satisfying gaming experiences of my life. However, this also means that listening to a real play of a well run RPG is about as interesting as hearing about someone else's dream they had. Which is why I completely get it when people bounce of FatT. Also, part of the reason I think FatT works is that they're not using D&D as the basis of their play. More modern story-telling games include rules that effectively act as dramatic tools as much as they simulate a physical interaction. This means that even in a story where the players aren't necessarily the prime movers of the plot (like in TaZ) , the players can still exert some agency and make things interesting. Old style D&D is basically an analogue video game which exists to settle disputes, leaving all of the dramatic heavy lifting in the laps of the DM and the players. I wonder how TaZ would go if they started using Dungeon World or something. However, I get the impression that they, like 99% of people who play RPGs, wouldn't want to bother learning a whole new system to do, ostensibly, the exact same thing (collaboratively make a story). These aren't thing I think are necessarily bad about the McEl-boys since it takes a special kind of weirdo to care enough about PnP games to really dig into alternative systems but for me, who's interest is mostly in the craft of DM-ing and RP-ing, I find TaZ deeply unsatisfying.

  14. There was a firestorm of harassment of two women a few months before gamergate, when Giant Bomb hired Dan Ryckert. What got them attacked was saying that a major, personality driven games culture site hiring yet another white guy was, at the very least, predictable. One of those harassed women left games writing entirely as a result. GB spoke out against that relativity quickly but the response was of the "This isn't us" kind. Primarily to mean "our community is better than this" but I harbor suspicions that there was also a little "this isn't our fault, don't do this in our name". Also, they never really, publicly, discussed the criticism those women leveled at them. That was what made their slow response to GG notable to me. It seemed like their major takeaway from their own (in comparison to GG) mini harassment campaign wasn't "we know what this is, we have a responsibility to come out against this" but "we don't want to be involved". That they were against the concept of targeted harassment as a rule but also didn't really take the substance of the criticism that got those women harassed seriously. The arm twisting that was involved in getting the bombers as a whole to consider Palmer Lucky a hotter mess for games than No Man's Sky in the latest end of the year deliberations made me think there's still ways for them to go. This is just my own, probably uncharitable, take. Also, for individual bombers, this wasn't the case. I also think they had diversity in mind when they hired Austin Walker (though he made it a real easy call since Austin is the best guy they ever had after Ryan Davis). Edit: this isn't a response to the question "why is Dan ruining the Beastcast?" Tho, I do think it contributes to why he's called out in the title of this thread. Him saying 2014 was the best year of his life without a ounce of self-awareness was a little galling.

It's that TV show they made. It's pretty funny, in exactly the same kind of way they're always pretty funny.
  17. To get ready for MGSV: The Phantom Pain (and to justify my impulse purchase of the MGS HD Collection), I've decided to go back and play all the Metal Gear games again. It's been years since I've played most of them and I've always had a soft spot for these dumb games. Do they hold up!? Probably! I'm going to tackle them in original release order: Metal Gear Metal Gear: Solid Snake Metal Gear Solid Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeros I aim to finish them at the rate of about one a month and I invite you to play along. It's going to be La Li Lu Le Loads of fun! First on the list, Metal Gear is available with the HD version of MGS3: Snake Eater, MGS3: Subsistence on PS2 and the MSX.

  19. I have so many good things to say about ASTRONEER! Here is an bullet point list: Everything has a wonderful physicality too it. Every bit of resources and equipment is modeled in the world. Even better, your "inventory" is also fully modeled in the world, which means the things you mine and craft don't just vanish into inventory screens. Even the power resource maintains an in world consistency as your suit has a battery same as all the modules on your base. The same methods you can use to generate power on your suit work on your base. Furthermore, you rarely have the luxury of ignoring power, even when you've got various generators setup. All these things can create a little bit of friction but it makes things feel so consistent. The gachapon research system is so much fun. All new technology, as well as some rare resources, come out of these big pods that you pull out of trees, dig out from under blobby space trees or pull off of wrecked space ships. These things are large and require you to physically drag them back to your base, which creates a tasty bit of anticipation whenever you get one open. The harshness of the Oxygen drain is really cool. If you're not linked to your base, your oxygen drains and you start suffocating, which only takes about 30 seconds. To combat this, you can create a network of "tethers" that let you go further a field without losing O2. It also allows you to make use of the power you're generating and storing at your base. This creates a very real feeling of pushing into a harsh and unknown horizon and a very real link to your base as well as a very visible record of your explorations on your little planet, two things I often feel are lacking in a lot of survival and exploration games. I'm not sure if this is actually a feature, but it seems like every time I start a new seed I end up with an abundance of a few things and a noticeable lack of other things. The three things you need a lot of in the early game are Resin, Compound and Research, and it always seems like I have to look harder for one of those three things. Not so much that it makes it impossible to play but just enough that you have to make a deliberate effort to overcome that setback. There's a great push and pull between tension and curiosity. You always have lots of little things to keep an eye on but you also always have something enticing just beyond your reach that makes you want to strike out further. All and all, this game has me hooked. i say give it a try, even in its Early Access state.
