Hey, I drew that reindeer... OnO

So I've decided to try clearing my backlog this year. I beat Xeodrifter the other day and just now beat Cave Story (after eleven years...). Woooo.
-
Two weird things I remember about Willy Wonka:
1) Gene Wilder was the one who suggested that Wonka first appear barely mobile with a cane and then suddenly do a somersault. The idea was that the audience would never know if he was lying or not after that.
2) "The snozberries taste like snozzberries" is a reference to Dahl's earlier adult book "My Uncle Oswald," where "snozzberry" is used as a slang term for "penis."

It took me like thirty seconds to realize that was Majora's Mask and not some scene from Rebuild of Evangelion that I had somehow forgotten.
So who else loved Eye of the Ryckert?
Drew getting angry at Dan for ruining the premium content schedule by beating Tyson on his first day was just the best. "It took me like a week to set this room up!"

Wat? When the fuck did that happen?
The most recent iteration, Scooby-Doo: Mystery Incorporated, had him as the only real-world guest star. In his first appearance, he's a rival-turned-comrade to an HP Lovecraft stand-in. In the series finale:
The gang changes the timeline and he is revealed to be the only multiversal constant, the only person besides themselves who recognize that the timeline has changed, meaning that he's always Harlan Ellison in every reality.
It's a really, really good series; even if you're not much of a Scooby-Doo person.
-
Also, the best Scooby-Doo guest star is clearly Harlan goddamn Ellison.

Am I the only one who thinks that Charlie and The Chocolate Factory is a really sinister movie with brutal, joyful killings of children? I could never understand why people liked it so much.
Willy Wonka is a fucked up guy.

I'm getting a sort of weird nostalgia for the manga I was reading back in high school and college, namely Sexy Voice and Robo. That is a damn good manga.

Oh man, I just remembered this for the first time in nearly twenty years. Curse you all.
These movies were almost certainly terrible (they were direct-to-VHS and produced by the Puppet Master guy), but I fucking loved dinosaurs as a kid so of course I was gonna love a trilogy of shitty films about kids with tiny dinosaur pals.
-
For stuff on Nintendo consoles, I'd most recommend Xeodrifter, Cave Story, the Metroid Prime trilogy, and -if it ever leaves the Japanese eshop- Metroid: Zero Mission. Super Metroid goes without saying.

Ok, and now I need to ask the important question, re: kids movies from this general era. Who here was into the animal stars? Homeward Bound? Beethoven? Air Bud? At Disney World last month, my girlfriend (jokingly) tried to convince my parents that Air Bud and his ouvre consisted of must-watch films. I was a little too old for Bud, but I think if I were tiny at the right time, I would've thought a golden retriever playing sports was pretty cool.
Air Bud gradually became the bane of my existence for a while. I remember thinking the original movie was alright when I was a kid, but by the time I got my first job at a video store, the "Buddies" spin-off series had started. They cranked those things out ridiculously fast, so every few months the trailer reel that plays 24/7 would include forever-looping footage of some hapless puppies that were clearly not enjoying themselves dressed up in uncomfortable-looking costumes and being dubbed over with terrible dialogue. Kids ate that shit up and we were constantly out of stock on most of them.
I remember enjoying Homeward Bound and Babe though.

Kids movies like Rambo!
I've known about the existence of this for ages but never actually seen any of it. I choose to retain my assumption that it's basicall G.I. Joe with more Columbian Neckties.
Also, don't forget Robocop.

Yeah, I think the 3d animation team did an amazing job of translating the old-school Mickey animation/stretching/shape-changing in the 3d characters.
What a wonderful short!
The industry is getting a lot better at making CG animation that preserves the look of traditional animation.

E.T. just never gets cute for me. I also dislike the Ewoks.
I've come around on practical effects vs CG in a big way recently. I feel like a lot of the artists who created practical effects got very attached to them, because -on top of the way that artists get attached to their work, something I know all too well- they're something tangible that you can see and touch and get all the more deeply invested in because of it, and the way that DVD features and movie magazine articles would constantly gush over the effort that went into them, I think a lot of that pride in the result rubbed off on the audience. I definitely appreciate the care and investment and love that went into making a lot of them, but at the end of the day they're just not convincing. Puppets tend to be stiff, slow and weightless; and very rarely actually resemble a real animal. Things like E.T. or The Thing or the Alien Queen or whatever are very impressive to me from a mechanical standpoint, but I don't for a second think of them as real, which still means that they've failed their intended purpose.
(of course there's tons of bad or dated CG and the occasional practical effect that still looks great, like Jurassic Park. Also, squibs are better than CG blood every time)
-
E.T. (the character, not the movie) is fuck-ugly and creeped me out as a kid. He reminds me of the creepy, uncanny, overly-detailed CG versions of traditionally 2D cartoon characters we keep seeing, except much more obviously a stiff puppet.

I saw The Goonies for the first time a few years back and I didn't particularly like it either.
Studies show The Goonies actually sucked.
-
They're almost certainly never going to put any of the Pokémon games on VC, since they wouldn't be compatible with any of the new games.
I doubt it, I can't imagine a change that would affect how I use it in any way, other than perhaps making it boot faster (though if anything, I expect four years of updates to do the opposite).
I've had a 3DS since launch day and a lot has changed pretty significantly. I was listening to some old Bombcasts from 2011 the other day, and I had completely forgotten that there wasn't even an eshop at launch.
-
Has anyone here read Beautiful Darkness? I read a preview of it and it was pretty fantastic. I'd like to know if it's as consistently excellent as those first few pages.
-
Holy crap, I can't even imagine what it would be like to have a 3DS go through four years of updates at once. It's gonna be like owning an entirely different console.
-
I beat Xeodrifter and started Sakura Samurai today! Both are actually pretty fun little games.
-
The new Terminator also feels like kind of a transparent way to get Schwarzenegger back, even though he was always a terrible actor and will contribute nothing now that he's no longer as physically imposing as he once was.
I'd prefer it if they didn't make more Alien; because the more details you learn about the Alien, the less scary it gets.

Life
in Idle Banter
There was an terrorist attack in Denmark today. One civilian dead, two wounded police officers.
Apparently a lone gunman who seemed to target a Swedish artist who published some rather bad caricatures a couple of years back.
Update: Two more people dead, including the gunman and a Jewish guard outside of a synagogue that became the second target. Several more wounded police officers.
In happier news, they caught a group of people in Halifax yesterday who were planning to go on a shooting spree before they could do it
So I heard is was supposed to snow today, but kind of felt like it wouldn't. I looked out the window this morning to check and...
404 outdoors not found.

Dan's character is Ric Flair. He's just seeing how long he can keep it up before one of the others realizes it.
