  1. As someone who fucking loves very naive early animation and comics, I'm super stoked for Cuphead. I'm not really sure what's up with the sentiment of "they should have just done this other, completely different visual style instead of this one that they very clearly wanted to use and obviously put a lot of effort into nailing."

I have to wonder if they'll go all the way with the visual jank of the stuff they're mimicking, ala Osamu Tezuka's Broken Down Film.

I fell asleep during the cast, so I'm gonna have to relisten to it, but I did want to say I got stuck on a swinging gondola ferris wheel once. It had spun all the way around to the point where my gondola was at the very top of the ride and then broken down and needed to be serviced. I was stuck there for something like half an hour while it swayed in the wind.

  2. So the game is out in Japan today and... the gay characters basically sound like terrible people.

Originally a thief, Zero became a soldier serving Prince Leo. He is incredibly sadistic and loves watching people suffer.

Syalla is the daughter of Tsukuyomi. She is extremely prejudiced and stalks those she deems "compatible" with her.

Syalla is also heavily implied to be a reincarnation of Tharja, the predatory stalker character that they made that creepy figurine of.

One step forward, eight steps back, I guess.

  3. It looks like there's actual action being taken to get the confederate flag taken out of government buildings and such.

I noticed someone today with a confederate license plate on their car, and it's not the first time I've seen it here. What a weird fucking thing for a symbol of such a specifically, objectively terrible thing has simultaneously managed to distance itself from its context enough to pop up in a completely uninvolved country.

  4. For anyone who missed it, Nintendo stated today that the upcoming Fire Emblem: Fates will be their first game to finally include gay relationships.* I'm super happy that they're finally taking their first baby steps into the 21st century, even if there's some caveats:

    1) so far, only the player character can get gay-married, and only to one character, and only in one version. I'll be playing the "Birthright" version, where a female player character can marry a woman, but you need to play "Conquest" if you want to marry a man as a male player character. The DLC "third version" will include both characters.

    2) there's a weird sort of "seperate but equal" quality to the fact that you apparently can't S rank your gay relationship, only "A+ rank" it... which... is actually not equal, come to think of it. A+ is below S in, like, everything.

*To be fair, the Gen V Pokémon actually did it first, but they were super-tame "dates" with little to no romantic undertones.

  5. I use a Club Nintendo messenger bag because it's just super-light canvas, but it's full of holes now and the only other ones I can find are super heavy leather things covered with pockets and buckles. It's like Rob Liefeld designed a bag.

  6. Another, less stupid Steven Universe theory:

Jasper fuses with Steven, knowing that the Crystal Gems would never hurt him and assuming he'd be easier to keep control over than Lapis.

  7. So now that E3's done, time to check how the bingo cards went! I was reminded of this by seeing a picture of how Microsoft still managed to get a fucking car on stage despite them doing their conference in an arena with no way to drive it on stage.

Oh, right. I got two bingos.

I counted a combination of Pelé and Hoop God for the athlete square, the terrible Just Dance bit for plastic instruments, and the Skylamiibos for Toys To Life.

  8. I'm still attempting to find places that are suited for fashionable plus-size women's lines that aren't super expensive. It's hard.

I'm super tall and trying to lose weight, so I can't find anything. I usually have to go with gender-neutral mens' clothes like t-shirts. Also, I inevitably end up tearing the crotch out of all of my shorts and pants within a few months because of all the walking I do.

The height thing hurts more than you'd expect. Everything is proportioned to match, so I've never owned, say, womens' shoes or gloves. It sucks.

I'm actually pretty interested in getting into fashion design as a side project. I'm interested in making my own clothing so that I wouldn't have to feel restricted by store sizes anymore, but I'm also fascinated by wearable tech. Not in the shitty Apple Watch way, in the cool "functional shit built into your actual clothes" way. Google and Levi's are working on something called Project Jacquard right now where they're weaving conductive thread directly into common fabrics (denim, polyester, etc) so that every item produced basically has its own touchpad. It's... an idea I actually had ages ago but didn't have the resources to do myself. I'm excited to see where that goes.

  9. While we're on it, did anyone else find that the PS3 online store was usually unreasonably slow? I have pretty fast internet, and although I prefer to buy all my games digitally, downloads on that system were an absolute slog for some reason. I assume it's a server-side thing. Did Sony ever fix it?

  10. It's not Metroid at its best, it's definitely not comparable to Super or Zero Mission, but it's nowhere near the worst Metroid's been. I would even argue that it holds up better than the original Metroid, it seems like a more self-aware and purposeful design where the original Metroid feels primordial and almost accidental.

I would like to echo this. OG Metroid doesn't hold up even a tenth as well as Metroid 2.

  11. So you guys may have noticed this in the Life topic earlier, but I think I can get away with giving this its own thread.

    Quoted from my tumblr:

    Hey guys.

So at this point, I’ve built up a fairly sizable audience here on tumblr, and I want to see if I can make it work for me. You all know that I’ve made a habit of producing free drawings every day, and that won’t change. Frankly, I want to do more of that. I want to have the time to produce more involved projects like the Pikmin piece I posted a few weeks back, or some of the more complex commissions I’ve been doing. But in order to do that, I need to be able to keep my focus on them full time. To help me do that, I’ve launched a Patreon, which I’ll be promoting on here from time to time.

You’ll notice that as of right now, there are no goals, and no reward tiers. That won’t be the case for long, I assure you. I’m new to this sort of thing, so I’d actually prefer to hear what you guys would like to see on that end before I make any judgments for you. I will let you know that one project I’ve been trying to get off the ground for a while now is a horror comic anthology, consisting of multiple shorts written and drawn by me. Patrons would get to hear the story pitches ahead of time, have access to exclusive concept art, get early access to comic pages, and even get to vote on which stories get produced first. I’d also like to supplement my existing commission business, and maybe give patrons above a certain tier a free or discounted commission (but don’t worry, commissions will always be available to anyone, Patron or otherwise).

It’s been a weird transitional period for me over the last few years. I’ve been constantly struggling to make ends meet and coping with mental illness, and the work I’ve produced for tumblr has been a fantastic outlet for me, and I know you like it too (or at least really like that one Arcanine picture). If you want to see more of what I can do, I urge you to pledge. the Patreon was originally created at the request of a few generous benefactors who wanted to make large donations, but right now, if everyone following this blog chipped in as little as $2 USD a month, I could make a full-time living making things for you to enjoy. I’d like to thank you again for your support, for reading all of this so far, and (hopefully) for your support in the future.

CLICK HERE TO SUPPORT ME ON PATREON

And let me know: If you were a patron, what kind of content would you like to see?

  12. Metroid II is super short, easy (though you'll want a map), and insubstantial. It's the only Game Boy game I've ever beaten. It ties into Super, but in a very easily-explained way. It would probably be a better use of your time to just read a synopsis or watch a video of the ending, because a lot of its additions to the mythos are either never really addressed again (namely the Metroid Life Cycle. A Metroid Queen appears in Other M and there's an Omega Metroid in Fusion, but that's it) or arguably trivial (it's the first game where Samus has the big round shoulders, for instance).

I like to play Super with the Wii U Pro Controller, but I did beat it with the Wii Classic Controller and I've played a lot of it with the gamepad. I wouldn't bother getting a special controller unless you were already interested in getting one.

  13. I'm surprised that the first article didn't realize that the t-shirt the Xbox guy was wearing was part of a reveal. After they announced the Rare collection he walked back out onstage with the jacket open so that you could see the shirt had the Rare logo on it.

  14. That's completely different; clearly making the robots humanoid and self-aware was necessary for some reason, so if you have that, then making them wear a uniform like human soldiers isn't much more of a stretch. But panties usually aren't standard-issue.

I'm prettty sure a standard military uniform includes underwear, unless that's why they call it "going commando."

  15. I worked out how to get to Fredericton and get my passport done. I just need to nail down actually getting the forms for the Tax ID number and where to send them.

  16. So they announced that instead of regular weekly episodes, they're gonna air reruns until around this time next month, then air another Stevenbomb. I think I kinda like this idea of just delivering the show in monthly five-episode blocks, but I dunno if it's paying off for them.

  17. the only actual confirmed exclusives I know of from this year were Halo, Gears, the entire Nintendo presentation, Uncharted, Horizon, Media Molecule's dream thing, and -strangely never mentioned- Nier 2.
