  1. I want to make THE GREAT GATLING-GUNSBY !!

I'm a GameMaker programmer with not-much-but-some experience (drewdunaj.itch,io) looking for art, sound, writing even.

My idea for The GGG is to have a scrolling 2D shooter that takes you through different scenes from the book (ie: tile sets), each area starting with a quote from the book flashing up on screen, but twist the end of the quote to make it about shooting/explosions/etc . I'm picturing very simple gameplay, just moving left right and shooting, but I want to "juice" it up as much a possible, screen shake, flashing lights and colors, all that good stuff. Crank the bombast up to 11...

I work full time so I'm going to try and keep the scope as light as possible, but I think a 5 minute game about Gatsby quotes and machine guns should work pretty well :3

  2. I don't know what Chrome's problem is, but I think it just flags raw .exe files as malicious. I've put the file in a .rar, hopefully it will work: https://www.dropbox.com/s/zbsqlj442zgi5n3/SPF%2011-19-14.rar?dl=0

Thanks for the high praise clyde!! Means a lot to me. I would be interested in hearing what kind of interactions you did create though :3

Berzee! I tried the swirly bouncing color game! Not a bad idea, though I wound up solving the levels by bouncing one color back and forth in a small area while I waited for the other one to collide with it. Probably not the kind of engagement you're looking for - maybe there should be a limit on how long you can hold the lines for or something so I can't sit there with it forever.

Tasty I will try out the multiplayer game next time I'm at a friend's house!

  3. Everyone's making such cool stuff, I want to add mine to the mix.

I've been working for maybe 6 months on SUPER PUNCHY FACE, a twitchy top down brawler about punching faces. It looks rough, but I've been focused on tightening the combat.

    Anyway check it: https://www.dropbox.com/s/at84q83dlhx0toc/SPF%2011-19-14.exe?dl=0

    WASD to move

    aim with your mouse cursor

left click jabs, hold it for a SUPER punch

right click dodges, hold it to block

left bar is your health, right bar is your stamina :D

    R to restart!

  4. My band is playing the last day of our tour in Philly tonight. We formed two months ago specifically to go on this tour with a couple awesome guys. The Sexy Teenagers and Science Club are the headliners and play pop punk. My band, The Pastries, has been billed as "50s Garage Rock", whatever that means.

Listen to us on bandcamp, yo! (I play bass) thepastries.bandcamp.com

  5. but if they're expecting me to ride a slow moving beast around the world then I'll pass.

If the world is empty enough, enemy wise, then this is exactly what I want. Holy shit, chilling on an elephant, strolling through the Himalayas? Yes fucking please. I would take that game, without anything else in it, and eat it up.

  6. Just waking up in Oakland! Bout to head over to the conference. I only have an expo pass so I won't be doing more than wandering around the floor if anyone wants to chill.

As for the meetup, I thought Thursday would be a good day, but I'm also thinking Wednesday night after the award ceremonies. Apparently those are the two days when all the parties are going on, so maybe it won't work out. Any day works for me, though.

  7. I made a simple platformer in Studio Pro with heavy comments to give to a friend who's just learning. I figured I would share it with people, because why not.

    Here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/31hmbtkozrd0hx8/Platformer.gmx.rar

It's got acceleration and friction, proper collisions with blocks on all sides, including corners - which I just figured out how to do. I'll probably update that link as I add to it, first thing probably being a jump arc that cuts off when you let go of the jump key EDIT: jump arc depending on key length is now in there, 20 minutes later :P

    Anyway, enjoy.

Also, Blambo, where did you learn about level generation?

  8. I'm guessing Thursday will be the day to meet. Those who aren't actually going to GDC are totally welcome to come anyway!

Lacabra's got a good point that we should maybe coordinate through twitter as opposed to this forum when the time comes. Sounds good to me. I'm @drewcifer000

Any locals got a good idea of what to do? I'll try and see if there are any open parties we can crash if people are interested.

  9. The Idle Thumbs GDC 2014 Meetup will occur at 9pm Thursday  March 20th at Dear Mom, 2700 16th Street. SF CA Congrats Nick etc.

If you don't have a Thumbs shirt or something related to a horrible meme to identify yourself then try screaming 'the wizaaard' upon entering the bar.

    -----------------------------

Hey guys! GDC is only a week away, and I'm hoping to organize some sort of Idle Thumbs meetup somewhere in San Francisco at some point during the week. Last year, we got a small crew to roam around for a while, and it was fun! But that was also a last minute kind of thing - I'm hoping that by planning this at least a week in advance, more people will have the opportunity to come hang out. I'm not from the area, so I don't really have a good idea of where to meet up or what to do once we have... Last year we just went to a few classy bars and had a good time, but if anyone's underage we should probably find something a bit more accommodating.

Is anyone else up for this?

  10. I haven't played Flotilla, but judging by some YouTube videos, it seems pretty simple. Should be pretty cool...

I wish I had know about this jam earlier :/ I'll be working a day job the next couple days but I'll be able to work on it at night. I'm actually about to get started right now :3

Do you guys have Skype or something? We should probably nail everything down before it's too late, and we probably shouldn't usurp this thread in the process

  11. What if your character is falling, debris and enemies are falling with you, faster/slower rate because of whatever reason. Using that gunpoint style snap/jump mechanic you jump from debris to debris to keep "elevated" or else you'll eventually hit the ground. As you snap to the debris before jumping, you can line up your shot in bullet time to either more debris or an enemy, latching onto the enemy where combat will be initiated (mash on a button? QTE? Something cooler?).

Oh man, that sounds pretty great. Enemies could have guns, and you'd have to use the falling debris as cover. Also, use it to sneak up behind them for an easier fight/no fight at all... That probably wouldn't be tooo hard to program. Just collision lines between enemies and the player, with a bunch of solid object debris moving at fixed random speeds... I'm not sure what the combat would be like - maybe it's just "physics" and you want to push guys into debris and/or the sides of buildings or whatever.

Okay, well I want to do this. Murdoc, boy, you guys down? Anyone else?

And Dino, I tried to play that but it ran at like 5 seconds per frame. That intro/tutorial area really drew me in too...

  12. I too would be totally into teaming up to make something. I was planning on writing something in twine with a little music but if I can lend my music/sound help to anyone (or if anyone wanted in on my dumb thing) then that'd be sweet. Lil sample of a warmup track I've been working on: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/19116875/ls_wip1.mp3

    Cyberpunk is best -punk.

That music is sick. I just finished a project, and I figure I could get another one in before GDC, so I'll probably wind up making it for that jam. If you wanna toss me some tunes or collaborate, let me know!

Anyway, I'm with SecretAsianman in that I though of Reckless Disrgard for Gravity at first too, but I use Game Maker so I won't be doing 3D. Now I'm thinking of a platformer with a Gunpoint style charge-leap, but instead of pouncing on dudes you would send them flying off ledges. I could never get gravity and all those collisions to work properly in a game that wasn't top-down.

Also, I'm not a great artist. Really, I can program decent enough, and I can design. I'm down to lend my services!
