You forgot TurboGrafx-16, though! Nothing says game console quite like [extreme! preface][random boring and sterile noun][random number that means nothing to the normal consumer]. It was marginally worse than XBox 360.

Oh yeah, forgot about that one. Oof.
PC Engine is slightly better by comparison.

OK, all this 'wee' talk is distracting people now, and they're using it against us. (Us=Nintendo fans who hate the name 'Wii', They=Nintendo fans who don't mind)
If we ignore the piss connotations (which are petty, really), or the 'WHY?!?' one either (which is what it really looks like and is how everyone will pronounce it - wi-fi, for instance), it still leaves us with an undeniable fact: it's a really really crap name.
Nintendo want it to be catchy, so people will easily remember it. They won't even remember how to pronounce it! And how brain-dead do Ninty think we are? Is 'Xbox' harder to remember than 'Wii'?
I'm all for having a short name that people will remember, negates the need for an abbreviation and is easily identifiable. The problem is that the one they have chosen is pathetic.
Let's have a taster - some real world scenarios, that you should say out loud:
"Hi, where are your Xbox games?"
"Hi, where are your Wii games?"
"I just bought a PS3!"
"I just bought a DS!"
"I just bought an N-Gage!" (sad bastard)
"I just bought an iPod!"
"I just bought a Wii!"
"There's this great new game coming out on Xbox 360"
"There's this great new game coming out on Nintendo Wii"
N64 Magazine
NGC Magazine
NWii Magazine
Only available on Playstation 3
Only available on Nintendo Wii
Has my point been made? Feel stupid yet? Think they could've thought up a little bit better name?

There's a new no.1 in my list of dissappointing name changes. And Windows Vista (I know Longhorn was only a codename) was already pretty dissapointing...
Wii sounds like a fitting name for one of those fresh, new, white and light, easy-to-use sofwares or services which probably have something to do with networks and in reality are of no use whatsoever. You know, one of those that have a very polished website with a picture of a smiling young (not too young, though) person wearing a wireless headset. It's definitely not a good name for a console..
For some reason, I love that logo animation, though.

I came as soon as I heard! And then I wiid, naturally.
I think the cock/piss-angle isn't really such a problem, but the fact that 'wii' is almost totally unusable in a regular English sentence--I don't know--it's just a strange choice.
But when you think about it, 'GameBoy' is pretty fucking wierd too.
EDIT: I'm really liking this edit-on-the-same-page thing, it's nice.

At least "Riding a Virgin" can be sort of delivered with a sly look or something. It's risque. It's entirely different than saying "I play with my Wii."

I think my favourite console name (even though it was a codename) was the Katana. Seriously, how cool was that?

Would you like more alarming trivia?
I remember back when I was seven (or there abouts) I heard someone in my class use the word "penis" and I thought it was hilarious. That night I was making fun of the kid, and my parents had to explain to me that that is actual what it's called. I blame my ignorance on a sheltered childhood, and living my early years in Paraguay.
Back to the topic on hand: Wii!!

There have been a lot of names for high-profile apparatuses over the years that have initially struck me as stupid, but then kind of grew on me over time. This was oddly opposite; "Wii" struck me just as kind of weird at first, but not stupid - then I got to thinking about actually using the name in real life situations (rather than typing it)...and yeah, maybe a little stupid.
I'd be funny if their idea of a name that was short and easy and didn't need to be abbreviated backfires, and just so people don't sound retarded they refer to the Wii as the "W.I.I."... That'd be pretty amusing.
...I don't know, I still refer to all consoles as "Nintendos" anyways, just to sound retro and cool, so this isn't that big a deal to me. The controller still was pretty sweet last I checked....

The thing about it is that, beyond the toilet humour, it actually doesn't make sense; and someone at Nintendo knows this because they had to create an ENTIRE page to EXPLAIN it.
That's why the name is so amazingly stupid, because it totally fails to encapsulate the console and its aims by having a name that no-one will know instinctively how to pronounce. So okay, Nintendo do explain the aims and meanings, but it does so on this site, and at great length; and if you need a website to explain the meaning and pronunciation of your flagship product, well, you've totally missed the point of a name.

Poor Nintendo. Poor fans. The outrage, disillusionment, and apologism makes for very entertaining reading for me, though!
However, I'll admit this was the most likely candidate for my next console purchase. Right now, though, I'm leaning towards skipping this entire generation of consoles, as I've recently poured too much cash into upgrading my PC.

It even looks crap. Just the bare combination of those three letters. How could japanese people with their fancy designer-kanji come up with something that unesthetic. 'Wii' - totally unbalanced.
And thinking about 'Wii' being used in real conversation makes me giggle.

True. It's been a while since I've had a good laugh over a PA, yet I still read it every other day for some reason.
