O god! Toilet humour aside, it's SO CONTRIVED! It's like there was this team of marketing bureaus thinking hard for two years and finally coming up with Wii and a list of reasons why it's cool and fitting.

Revolution, though laughed at when it was revealed, was bold, dramatic, over-the-top and confidently in-your-face. It triggered my imagination and my curiosity. "Wii" is just another faceless i-pod clone.

Look, I still have much faith in the new Nintendo console which I shall keep calling The Rev, but this name stinks muchos grande.

I expected it to be given a new name at some point (as per every Ninty console) but this...

"Wii"?

What a coincidence! The name of the new console is exactly what Nintendo fans are shouting now: "Why? Why?! WHY?!?!"

EDIT: No, Nintendo. It does not say 'We', which is equally piss-takeable as Rodi pointed out, it says why.

If the public has to be told how to pronounce a console's name, and just why the hell they gave it such a stupid name, the one thing they're not going to do afterwards is buy the damn thing. They'll think "Huh? That's too complicated. Let's get a PS3".

I just hope it's a part of some bigger campaign to get people talking about the console (which, let's face it, has been LUDICROUSLY successful) pre-E3/pre-release, and that, eventually, another name will be revealed.

And to those who say names don't matter, it's the games that do - while that is largely true, the fact remains that a name does hold some significance and importance. If it didn't, then they (Nintendo) wouldn't have spent several paragraphs explaining their choice of name.

In one fell swoop Nintendo have completely bummed themselves in the gob, NOBODY in the UK will be able to take the console seriously with such a ridiculous name, it's gonna bomb :'(

Before anyone starts going on 'Oh it's just a name, get over it, it'll still be the same cool console', as seems to be happening on every other forum, Eurogamer included - I'm sure no one here is disputing that fact. What we are really upset about is the fact that Nintendo seemed to be getting this console right, and actually making cool moves that we all liked. We want this console to be a BIG success. Now, Nintendo'll be humiliated.

The DS is a simple name, and it works fine. Wii is short, but it isn't simple. It is crap, and not catchy at all. DS didn't have to be explained, it was pretty obvious what it stood for - "Wii" does need to be explained. If you can't even pronounce the damn thing correctly it's not going to take off! Take Linux as an example! Who can pronounce "Windows"?

And consider that it means 'yes' (oui) in French, which is going to sound at least a little silly to them.

I also read somewhere that it means 'why' in Dutch, which is also rubbish.

Actually, I do give a damn that it's just a crappy name. Sales figures be damned, Nintendo's smart enough to solve that conundrum. But saddling us with something as arcane and contrived as Wii is just a menace.

It would have been nice if it had been 'whii', as in, the shout of exuberance, but apparently that isn't in their LIST OF REASONS.

My first reaction was: "WTF????????????????????????".
My second, third and fourth reactions were: "WTF??????! ... ?? ... ...?"

But, to keep some perspective...

• It won't dramatically affect sales either way.
• In a few months the "wee" thing will be forgotten.
• It's just a really dumb name.

The negative impact of the name being so retarded will be compensated by people talking about how retarded the name is. And making Flash movies about it. And sticking two i's into everything. (This has already begun).

That it's the same word for penis or pee doesn't matter that much. There was a Dutch channel a couple of years ago that launched with the name Yorin (a contraction of "you're in"). Everyone called it Urine, until people got sick of it. And that took about two weeks.

Still ... I weep. Dumbest name in console history?
