Another day. Another dollar. Another World.
Update 14/04 Both demo and full versions of Another World for Windows are now available from http://www.anotherworld.fr/. If you don't buy it you are very a bad man!
Above: Another World 1991
Above: Another World 2006
1991 was an interesting year. In the Middle East, an international coalition gives plucky upstart Iraq a laser-guided slap on the wrist. In Seattle's OK Hotel, a crowd of drunks watch a band called Nirvana play a little ditty called "Smells Like Teen Spirit" for the first time. Mikhail Gorbachev officially dissolves the Soviet Union, ending decades of Cold War.
Meanwhile in Europe, three years of concentrated effort on the part of a Frenchman named Chahi bear fruit; in the form of Another World ( Out of this world), a videogame quite unlike anything the game playing masses have ever encountered before. Most people with opposable thumbs, any kind of games kit and any quantity of savvy will remember playing this title; chances are they'll remember it fondly.
Now PC owners will have the chance to travel once more to the weird and eerily beautiful World with the original vector graphics and background art now retouched, reworked and scalable to appropriately epic resolutions.
The remastered Windows XP version of Eric Chahi's Another World will become available for download via www.anotherworld.fr tomorrow, April 14th.
Go. Buy it, download it, play it. After an extended absence from the gaming industry, Eric Chahi has a new project in progress. Make Eric happy and rich, convince him there are gamers out there with taste, gamers worth making games for. Do this, and some day maybe we'll get something as good as Another World again. Or better.

Awesome! If only I could understand what is said on that website. Since I can't read/write/speak french. Anyone up for a quick translation?

That's funny, at work today I was thinking to myself how it should be possible to quite easily scale Another World's graphics, what with them being vector based, and how great it would be to play it in hi-res. I too wish I could read French (or that that little Union Jack actually did something when clicked on.)

God, this is going to piss me right off. I can feel it. You see, I could always complete the Amiga version with consumate ease, but the PC version had this little extra bit.....
But really, great news! Hope it's got the Amiga sound!

I'll get it, but I already feel my brain is going to explode. I think it's the most frustrating game I've ever played and I stopped playing after not getting too far.

That'd be nice, but I doubt it.
I wonder if this release will go over the heads of US fans who know the game as "Out of this World" (noted briefly in the article).

I'm "laughing" here, but Out of This World did get a Mac release back in the day, so it would be a nice gesture and all...

I checked, it being the 14th and all, but it wasn't available yet. Maybe when I get home from work tomorrow night I'll give it another shot. I've heard lots of great about this, but have never actually had a chance to play it myself. I've been up for a good adventure lately, and between this, Dreamfall, and Bone, I may be far too busy over the next couple of weeks. Hurray!

As a kid I championed this game to everyone I knew, despite never owning it or getting very far through it when playing it at a friend's place... I was just so taken with the atmosphere. A few years later I gave it much more time and loved it even more. I'm really glad this is happening, but I do hope there are some minor changes, such as not having to write\remember passwords, which is an archaic and impractical way of doing things in the context of today's games. Automatic game saving would be a big plus and take away an unnecessary distraction. Also, saving at shorter intervals would be a kind gesture for less seasoned players, but I wouldn't hold my breath on that one.

The GBA port of the game had a save game functionality, I'd be surprised if this didnt offer one too

Just gave the first section a play through, I'll definitely be registering it to full version. Nice to see the menu has a continue option within which you can go to anywhere you've already completed. It's a shame the password screen still comes up when you die though, but I can live with that, it's very nice to play this not only in it's original glory, but spiced up a bit
The speed boost option is nice too!

Try going into anotherworld.ini and changing SpeedBoost to 5 or so I'm stoked that you can, the whole thing flows better a little faster than the original speed (5x is entertainingly excessive though)
