Japanese gamers vote on top 100 games of all time
The voice of Japanese gamers, Famitusu magazine, recently held a poll to find the top 100 games of all time in Japan. Next-Gen has the results, prepare to be unamazed as you read the most boring top 10 list of all time:
1. Final Fantasy X (2001)
2. Final Fantasy VII (1997)
3. Dragon Quest III (1988)
4. Dragon Quest VIII (2004)
5. Machi (1998)
6. Final Fantasy IV (1991)
7. Tactics Ogre (1995)
8. Final Fantasy III (1990)
9. Dragon Quest VII (2000)
10. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998)
That's completley sick. In the full list there are two seperate entries for Street Fighter II (20) and Street Fighter II Turbo (80), I'm pretty sure not a single Final Fantasy is missed out either. Surprise entries include Animal Crossing DS (43), and Sim City (93) Read the rest over on Next-gen

And to think there was a time I thought Japan had a good taste in games...
Then again, maybe they'd think my top 100 is retarded too...

Either Japanese gamers have no taste
or Famitsu magazine subscribers have no taste
or the kind of people who answer polls have no taste.
What the hell is Machi?

I think they're missing out so much by seemingly completely neglected EVERY SINGLE Western game, ever. I'd like to believe we have a broad taste in games of all cultures, but that list is all boring Japanese RPG after RPG. Not that they're boring, but a hundred of them in a row, most of which will feature weeeeeeeeellllllllllpretty much the same things with slight variations...

But Final Fantasy VII made people cry. So of course that's on there
Also, Advent Children kicks copious ammounts of ass.

Brilliant, Dragon Quest 5 is on there twice. The original version and the ps2 remake.
And I thought magazines in the US had really shit top 100 lists.

Oh, man, these last two news posts really uphold some of Japan's less flattering stereotypes. I mean, camping out in front of stores just for a smaller version of an old piece of hardware? Camping out for the DS is fine, I guess, but you got to think that most of these DS-Lite camper already have the original...unless maybe the dedicated hardware enthusiasts over there only buy new gaming electronics once the smaller, more streamlined versions are released....
Then there's what seems like an inexplicably strong attraction to fairly boring twentieth rehashes of twenty-year-old RPGs. Sure, some of those games are fun, but none but Zelda belong on any top-ten of all-time. And what's up with eight of the ten being sequels?
I really have a hard time believing that top-ten accurately depicts the general public’s opinion in Japan; there are just way too many better games than those, and I can’t believe their tastes are thatmuch different than ours.
But the Japanese’s love of small electronics cannot be denied.
Not to say us westerners don't have our own silly quirks, it's just funny how the last two news posts so elegantly exemplify Japan's gaming stereotypes.

It's OK Miffy, neither have I. Although I sat through most of VII.
Edit: Oh no, wait, I did play Chrystal Chronicles. But that doesn't count because it's fun.

Well it surely isn't my list because I deeply despise FFX, but who am I to complain?
At least they have a Zelda game in there.

To me, the question is this: What's up with seven of the games being Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest Sequels?
I guess that's the problem with doing a poll with no restrictions, rather than an editorial board discussion. In the latter, the board could decide on a consensus favorite from a series, then limit the series to one slot in the top 10, unless there was a very strong argument for including two. (And in the very least, not put two different versions of "Street Fighter II" and some other games on the list.) That way, there would at least be a variety of games. Oh, and Grim Fandango would make the list.
I've only played a little of Tactics Advance for the Gameboy and Crystal Chronicles and no Dragon Quest, but I have watched people play Final Fantasy VII.

Couldn't they have just checked GameFAQs if they wanted a top ten list comprised entirely of Final Fantasy games ?...
