Remember when games used to sound like this:
"Bleep bleep...boowoop! Bloing!"? Not exactly your top-o-the-pops hit back then. But today the games industry, and yes, we gamers, are now helping to ignite the trends and sales in music.
National Public Radio's audio scoop examines the current sensation of games and the music industry mingling.
According to a survey done by
Electronic Gaming Monthly nearly 30% of gamers go and buy a band's cd from hearing that band's music on the games they play if they like it. And considering that over 250 million games sold last year, that equals, um....well, you do the math. In fact, many of today's younger gamers mostly prefer to listen to the music of their favourite games over listening to the radio.
Big game companies like
Electronic Arts are constantly being approached by record companies looking to pimp their musicians. This is because it's much easier for new talent to break into the business as the games industry is more receptive to them - if they like what they hear, it goes straight into the games, no bullshit. As is, radio stations are less inclined to open their arms due to consolidations, tight ownerships, and other red tape.
So next time you pop in
Halo or
Max Payne 2 or whatever, think about it - that's one less band struggling to get discovered. Especially if you like the soundtrack and buy the cd.
